1 Indian Trail High School & Academy February T H S T R E E T, K E N O S H A, W I FROM THE PRINCIPAL What a winter it has been! Due to the recent school cancellations in January, the current KUSD school calendar will have to be extended. As soon as the updated schedule is created it will be posted to the INDIAN TRAIL WEBSITE. Stay tuned for details. As we move into February, we begin planning for the school year. Our first step is student registration. More information about the registration process can be found in the Guidance section (page 9) of this newsletter. We believe that it is important for you to be a part of this process. Please take time to talk with your sons and daughters about possible class selections, their strengths, interests and future plans. We know the conversations held at home help keep students motivated to do their best. Please feel free to contact the counselors with any questions you may have. Traffic patterns continue to be a concern at both arrival and dismissal times. We will be implementing some changes to our traffic flow this spring and more information will follow. Until then, we ask that you keep student safety in mind. We have many young drivers using our parking lot and with the snowy conditions, we need everyone to drive with care. In the morning, traffic becomes much heavier after 7:15. Our building is open at 6:45 and students can eat breakfast or mingle in the commons. Please realize our first period class begins at 7:30 and we need our students in class and ready to learn. If possible, consider dropping your children off earlier to beat the rush. Thank you for your cooperation with this matter. 2 PBIS UPDATES Indian Trail students have been working hard this school year at practicing positive behaviors. Students have been demonstrating why Indian Trail is considered a PBIS School of Merit. As a building, we are practicing the Hawk Habit of respect by demonstrating kindness and consideration toward adults and students. Students are also working on following directions, staying engaged while in the classroom, and responding appropriately to a variety of challenging situations. The hard work is paying off - thanks to practicing and living by our Hawk Habits, we have written over 150 FEWER referrals this year compared to last year! Students are awarded Hawk Talons and Hawk Hollers for particularly exemplary behavior, and have the chance to earn great prizes! Students should save the small half of their Hawk Talon. As a reminder, the first semester Hawk Talon drawing is coming up. Students who received Hawk Talons but have not yet won a prize will have one final chance to win! During second semester, there will be special Hawk rewards that students can buy with their Talons, as well as more weekly drawings. P OSITIVE B EHAVIOR I NTERVENTIONS AND S UPPORTS IT students are doing great! Keep it up! YOUTH OPTIONS INFORMATION INFO MEETING ON THURSDAY FEBRUARY 6 All Kenosha Unified sophomores and juniors interested in learning more about the Youth Options Program are invited to attend an Evening with the Counselors presentation. The presentation will be held in the Indian Trail Academy and High School auditorium, th Street from 6:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. Counselors from KUSD high schools and representatives from Gateway Technical College, the University of Wisconsin- Parkside, and Carthage College will share course information to eligible KUSD students and also work with parents and students so that they understand the policies, procedures and paperwork required for taking Youth Options courses. 5 FROM THE NURSE S OFFICE TIS THE SEASON FOR FROSTBITE AND HYPOTHERMIA Frostbite and hypothermia are cold-related emergencies that may quickly become threatening to life or limb. Preventing cold-related emergencies includes not starting an activity in, on, or around cold water unless you know you can get help quickly in an emergency. Be aware of the wind chill. Dress appropriately and avoid staying in the cold too long. Wear a hat, gloves, and layers of clothing. Avoid unnecessary exposure of any part of the body to the cold. Drink plenty of warm fluids or warm water but avoid caffeine and alcohol. Stay active to maintain body heat. Take frequent breaks from the cold. Get out of the cold immediately if the signals of hypothermia or frostbite appear. *FROSTBITE is the freezing of a specific body part such as fingers, toes, the nose or earlobes. Signals of frostbite include lack of feeling in the affected area; skin that appears waxy, is cold to the touch, or is discolored (flushed, white or gray, yellow or blue). What to do for frostbite 1. Move the person to a warm place. 2. Handle the area gently; never rub the affected area. 3. Warm gently by soaking the affected area in warm water ( degrees F) until it appears red and feels warm. 4. Loosely bandage the area with dry, sterile dressings. 5. If the person s fingers or toes are frostbitten, place dry, sterile gauze between them to keep them sepa rated. 6. Avoid breaking any blisters. 7. Do not allow the affected area to refreeze. 8. Seek professional medical care as soon as possible. *HYPOTHERMIA is failure of the body s warming system, and may quickly become life threatening. The goal of first aid is to restore normal body temperature and to care for any conditions while waiting for EMS personnel. Signals of hypothermia include shivering, numbness, glassy stare; apathy, weakness, impaired judgment; loss of consciousness. What to do for hypothermia 1. CALL or the local emergency number. 2. Gently move the person to a warm place. 3. Monitor breathing and circulation. Give rescue breathing and CPR if needed. 5. Remove any wet clothing and dry the person. 6. Warm the person slowly by wrapping in blankets or by putting dry clothing on the person. Hot wa ter bottles and chemical hot packs may be used when first wrapped in a towel or blanket before applying. Do NOT warm the person too quickly, such as by immersing him or her fully in warm water. Rapid warming may cause dangerous heart arrhythmias or shock. Warm the core first (trunk, abdomen), not the extremities (hands, feet). REMEMBER, to check on elderly relatives, friends, and neighbors. Tell people where you are going and when you expect to return. Do NOT ignore shivering; it is an important first sign that the body is losing heat! Persistent shivering is a signal to return indoors 5
