1 Whigham News Issue 3 November 2017 Welcome, November! We hope that you have been enjoying the cooler weather. Remember to turn your clocks back this coming Sunday. We are well into the second nine weeks and are looking forward to all the activities of the fall season: basketball games, archery tournaments, club service projects, and fundraisers. It is a time when we reflect on all of our blessings. We are thankful for our families, our teachers and staff, our students, and our community. We will enjoy our Thanksgiving Holidays November Thank you for allowing us to bring you the news each month! 2 In The News... COMMUNITY CARES CLUB GEARS UP FOR ANNUAL CANNED FOOD DRIVE CCC will be starting our annual food drive on November 1 st. Please send any non-perishable food item in by November 10 th. We will distribute all items collected to families in our community. The homeroom that turns in the most cans will receive a pizza party! GIRLS SOFTBALL SEASON = SUCCESS Reported by: McKenna Knight & Macy Ellis Congratulations to the Whigham Lady Indians on a successful season!! The team finished the season with an 8-4 record and 7 graduating 8 th graders: Macy Ellis, McKenna Knight, Callie Cassels, Ansley Ponder, As Jha Thomas, Kristal Gomez, and Caylynne Norton. Coach Burke will miss his eighth graders greatly but will do a great job next year with the remaining players. The eighth graders will miss Whigham School greatly and are thankful for the time they have had at Whigham School. GRADY COUNTY REACH SCHOLARSHIPS Reported by: Ansley Ponder & Leah Brogoto REACH (realizing educational achievement can happen) GEORGIA is a need-based scholarship that starts in 8 th grade. REACH scholars are paried with a mentor and an academic coach through high school. Students must maintain a GPA of 2.5 in core courses; they have to maintain good behavior and attendance throughout middle and high school. Scholars who successfully complete the program and graduate from high school are awarded a $10,000 scholarship that can be used at any university system of Georgia, technical college system of Georgia College, or private colleges in Georgia. These funds are in addition to the other grants and
3 scholarships the student may receive. The ceremony was held Friday morning, October 6, 2017 at the Vanlandingham Center. Five 8 th graders including Gavin Hawthorne and Caylynne Norton from Whigham, were awarded the scholarship! Congratulations to our REACH Scholarship winners! STUDENT COUNCIL ELECTIONS Reported by: Bria Bogan & Takeyah Johnson In the month of October, Whigham School voted to elect their Student Council president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. Our newly elected leaders for : President Julee Whitehead, 8 th Vice President Secretary Treasure Hayden Tatum, 8 th Lana Walker, 6 th Macy Ellis, 8 th FALL FESTIVAL By: Rory Brown & Philip Ponder The Fall Festival had a great turn out with plenty of fun activities. People from all around the area came to the Whigham School Fall Festival. The music was great, and no matter where you were on the baseball field, you could hear the music. The Haunted Hallway looked fantastic and scary from the outside. Of course, give credit to the FFA members that set the Haunted Hallway up-great job FFA! Skate Towne came out to the Fall Festival with plenty of fun things to do. The PTO did a great job organizing this event to raise money for the school and provide a wonderful time for anyone who came. KING AND QUEEN Reported by: Shelby Knight & Hank Hawthorne Congratulations to our new King and Queen! Both worked hard to earn their new titles. Liam Bundrick who is in Mrs. Stewart s 2 nd grade class was crowned as king after raising with a total of $1, Brooke Lynn De Plato was crowned as Whigham School s Queen. Brooke Lynn is a Pre- K student in Mrs. Gordon s class. Brooke Lynn holds the record for raising the most money in the history of this fundraiser! She earned $4, alone! The top three girls
4 were Brooke Lynn De Plato, Rylee Knight, and Chloe Jade Dodson. The top three boys were Liam Bundrick, Drew Harrison, and Austin Thomas. This year the king and queen nominees raised almost $14,000! The Whigham PTO would like to give a big thank you to all who participated. We sincerely appreciate all of your hard work. ARCHERY NEWS Reported by: Hunter Sanders & Hudson Bostick The Archery team is practicing very hard to prepare for their upcoming tournaments. We are aiming to make it to state this season. The dates for the tournaments are set for October 27 th and November 10 th. The Region and State Tournament dates will be set in the future. The members of the Whigham School archery team are Boys-Rory Brown, Gavin Hawthorne, Hudson Bostick, Hunter Sanders, Andrew Sigler, Jackson Pope, Carlton Mobley, Timothy Chandler, Curtis Peck, Drew Owen, Jacob Pyles, Philip Ponder, and Gabe Childs. Girls-Macie Freeman, Hannah Morris, Anslee Owen, Mollie Grace Meredith, Leah Brogoto, Ellie Knight, and Callie Cassells. Coaches-Mrs. Augusta Bostick, Mr. Adam Burke, and Mr. Heath Sanders. The Archery team sends a shout out to Mr. Heath Sanders for being an awesome volunteer archery coach and for his business, South Ga Outdoors for keeping our bows and arrows repaired. We are so very fortunate to have people like you helping our team be the best that it can be. JR. BETA NEWS Reported by: Shelby Knight & Hank Hawthorne The Jr. Beta club is holding a powderpuff game on Tuesday, December 19 th. Those participating will be 7 th vs. 8 th grade Jr. Beta girls. Our masculine boy members will be the cheerleaders! Everyone is invited to come watch and the admission price is $2. There will also be concessions.
5 AG NEWS Whigham FFA members recently attended the Sunbelt Ag Expo in Moultrie, GA. Students got to see the latest farm equipment, technology, demonstrations, and visit with agriculture colleges and universities. Students participated in a bounty hunt locating items that can be used as prizes in their agriculture classes. FFA Convention held in Indianapolis. Whigham representatives were: Tanner Norton, Mollie Grace Meredith, Hayden Tatum, and Julee Whitehead. Students attended sessions, a career fair, and toured many attractions in Indianapolis. Thank you to the generous sponsors who helped this trip happen. The FFA Haunted Hallway was a great success. Thank you to the students, parents and supporters who made, helped, and volunteered your time to make the haunted hallway spooktacular! The annual FFA fruit sale is underway. We have a great selection of fresh Florida citrus and Washington apples. This year we are also offering gift boxes under $20. Order forms are available in the front office, through members, or please contact Mrs. Champagne. Orders must be placed by Friday, November 10 th and the fruit will be delivered Wednesday, December 13 th.
