1 9 June 15 June 2016 Newsletter 16 Volume 39 From The Principal It was special to have Sydney Dance Company with us last week. A reminder we should open our doors and studios if we can to key dance companies like SDC. The excitement from the children was lovely and the conversations I heard amongst our students while they watched were powerful. Of course we also get a buzz from it. I finally met Hall of Famer David Mack, I was reminded how much I have enjoyed Hall of Famer Daniel Roberts dance pathway since teaching him in year 7 and how much of it we have shared with him, and to have Latisha Sparks with us at the start of her career. Very special for a lot of us. David Mack announced his retirement from SDC on Saturday night, what a stellar career so far. Here is David s biography from the Sydney Dance Company. David began his training at the Victorian College of Arts in 1998 finishing his secondary school education and completing a Bachelor of Arts in Dance. After briefly freelancing while studying, he joined West Australian Ballet in 2002 and stayed with the Company until the end of In June 2004 David joined the Rambert Dance Company in London where he spent two years performing as a Principal and Soloist in works by Christopher Bruce, Rafael Bonachela, Wayne McGregor, Fredrick Ashton, Kim Branstrup and Michael Clark. In 2006 David was invited to work with Javier de Frutos at Phoenix Dance Theatre. The Company toured extensively performing at the Venice Biennale and all over the UK. In 2008 he returned to West Australian Ballet as a soloist and choreographed his first work Papillon in the 2009 Genesis season. Since joining Sydney Dance Company in 2014, David has performed in numerous productions including Interplay (2014), 2 One Another (2014), Louder Than Words (2014), New Breed (2014 and 2015), Frame of Mind (2015), Triptych (2015) and Illuminated (2015). David was also part of Mira Calix s Inside There Falls installation for Sydney Festival (2015). David was recently awarded the 2015 Green Room Award for Best Male Dancer for Quintett & Frame of Mind. We celebrate David and his work. A little known fact is the male dancer, represented in our large bronze sculpture in the light court is David! This reminds us how important our alumni connections are and the great work Jenny Purcell is completing in this area. David Mack told me he loved the way the school showed interest in their alumni and it meant a lot to be followed and welcomed back. Daniel Roberts essentially told Hilary Bland and me the same. Dancers Chloe Leong and David Mack in Quintett. Photo: Peter Greig That VCASS is not only one of the key dance trainers in Australia, that 7 years after leaving the VCA our program seems stronger and more confident than ever, as well as respected and is a credit to our Dance Program. I want to offer my sincere thanks to our Head of Dance Tim Storey for his central role in all of this. The continuity, dedication and strong ethos he offers us is really positive for our school, as is his ability to take advantage of all the opportunities the new VCASS has made possible for his program. In 2016, just before our 40th year in 2017, this is a wonderful place to be in. In 2016 I plan to lead a review of the Hall of Fame to continue the dance and music celebrations and make a framework to welcome Academic, Visual Arts, Theatre Arts and Community Leadership to our categories. Once this final format is agreed we will make a major call out for the awarding of these categories to our alumni. We will of course welcome them to our school as often as we can. I would welcome any of our alumni s thoughts on this. On a practical level everyone is telling me how tired they feel now this long term is nearly done. The snap of winter weather and darkness descending has added to this. Like all of us I can t believe the year is almost half over. The General Achievement Test was this week. This reminds me that any year 12 student who needs extra support should ask. We are now at the pointy end of their schooling, not long to go, but lots to achieve. COLIN SIMPSON Incororating What's on
2 Page 2 Academic The Leviston Library Audio books Do you spend a long time travelling to school? Or perhaps you are heading off on a long drive these holidays. An audio book might be a great way to pass the time. Or perhaps you haven t finished reading your book for English. An audio book might be the solution. The Leviston library has a small but growing collection of audio books. These are available for loan by students. The upcoming school holidays might be wonderful time to borrow an audio book. I intend to live for a while in England where my mum is just starting to struggle with one of those age related diseases that often beset the near 90s. It will be good for me to see her. I will be working here during the mid-term break to complete my work with the male solos for the BTW as I do not like leaving loose ends My best to all of the school community TIM STOREY, HEAD OF DANCE A sample of titles in the school library. LEONIE PERRY, LIBRARIAN RAD Examinations Examination Session 1 finishes this week. Students who have completed their exam should proceed to their next level as soon as possible. This is the time when the detail of the syllabus is taught to new students. Results are usually posted within the next 3 weeks. Dance A Message from the Head of Dance Yes all of the rumours are true. I am taking long service leave next semester. After 26 years without a break - other than annual leave I really feel the need for a break from the constant pressure. I leave the dance program in excellent hands with my leading teacher Steven McTaggart taking over the reins as Acting Head backed up by leading teacher Maggie Lorraine and of course the rest of the team. I foresee no problem they already do much of the work! I really regret leaving my Year 8/9 boys training class for a semester because one of the great pleasures of my life is watching and helping the growth and development of these young men as they struggle to master their skills and artistry. I will really miss them. But as Colin says, they will still be here when I return in I have ensured that they will have excellent training in my absence. We have a very cohesive Year 12 working well - I will complete most of their VET work with them prior to leaving they will mostly just need to finish off the loose ends. I wish them the best for their final short time with us and look Dance Challenge & Genee Update Applications for Dance Challenge close on July 1 st. This is also the date when applications for the Genée International Ballet Competition will open. Please check the RAD (Sydney ) website for further information. All students who are entering Dance Challenge have been given their music and entry details and can now enter online. Please call or me if you have any queries regarding the online entry. Queen s Birthday long weekend There will be no RAD classes on Saturday June 11 th due to the Queen s Birthday holiday on the Monday. Solo Seal Timetable Change In term 3 Solo Seal class will be held on Saturdays to enable rehearsals with the Pianist. Students should alter work schedules to accommodate this. The Monday after school class will be for Bursary and Genee Coaching. JANNE BLANCH, RADCOORDINATOR blanch.janne.j@edumail.vic.gov.au Incororating What's on
