1 Dear Potential Cheerleader, Thank you for your interest in Normandy Cheerleading! We have a great program at Normandy and would love for you to be a part of it! Our cheerleaders cheer at football and basketball games, compete at cheerleading competitions, attend cheerleading camp, walk in parades and host cheerleading clinics. We have three different squads that you may try out for: Football Cheerleading (JV and Varsity), Basketball Cheerleading (JV and Varsity), and Competition Cheerleading. You may try out for one, two, or all three of the squads. Tryouts will be held April 24, 25, 26 and 27th in the Normandy gym. You must attend all 4 days of tryouts. The first three days are clinics from 7:00-9:00pm, where you will learn a cheer, chant and dance. The last day is the tryout starting at 5:30pm. You will be asked to perform the material you learned in front of judges. After your tryout on Thursday, April 27 th you should leave the school. All tryout participants should report back to Normandy at 8:30pm on Thursday, April 27 th to pick up an envelope with your name on it. Inside the envelope will be a letter indicating what squads (if any) you ve made. Please review all of the information in this packet. 2 Normandy Cheerleading Guidelines FOOTBALL CHEERLEADING SEASON Football Cheerleading season consists of approximately 10 varsity and junior varsity football games. Varsity games are on Thursday and Friday nights. JV games are on Thursday nights. JV cheerleaders will cheer all varsity home games. In the event that there is no JV football team, the JV cheerleaders will cheer all varsity games. Practice Schedule: Summer practices will begin in June and will be on Monday s from 7:00-8:30pm. During the school year practices will remain on Monday s. Additional practices may be added as needed. Games: Tardiness will be punished you must be at games and arrive for the bus on time. If you are late for the bus we will leave without you! No gum or food during games. The only jewelry that may be worn at games and practices are stud earrings. Hair must be half up or all up at games and matching bow must be worn. Bangs must be pinned back. No headbands or hair accessories may be used except bobby pins. Pep Rally: The Varsity cheerleaders will perform a dance at the pep rally. JV cheerleaders who are able to master the Varsity dance will also be able to perform the dance. The coaches will decide which JV cheerleaders will perform the Varsity dance. The JV cheerleaders will also have a separate performance. Performance: One of the purposes of cheerleading is to entertain-you will learn many different routines, some of which you will be required to choreograph yourself. Tumbling skills are required if you have them, not wanting to tumble is not an excuse. If you tumble at tryouts you must tumble during the season. Attendance: Due to an intense performance schedule the following attendance policy will be in effect for winter season. Specific details of the attendance policy will be in the winter cheerleading packet once you make the squad. 1 st missed practice sit one half next game 2 nd missed practice sit one half next game 3 rd missed practice sit next game 4 th missed practice sit next game and no halftime performance 5 th missed practice cause for removal from squad 1 st MISSED GAME sit the whole next game 2 nd MISSED GAME cause for removal from squad BASKETBALL CHEERLEADING SEASON Basketball Cheerleading season consists of approximately 20 varsity and junior varsity basketball games. Games are on Tuesday and Friday nights from December through February. Playoffs extend the season approximately 3 weeks longer for varsity cheerleaders. JV cheerleaders cheer for the junior varsity basketball team and also perform at halftime of the varsity games. JV cheerleaders are required to stay and watch the varsity games. JV games are at 6pm and Varsity

3 immediately follows. Practice Schedule: There will be some summer practices before cheerleading camp. In October, practices will be once a week on Mondays from 7:00-9:00pm. Beginning in November, practices will be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6:30-9:00pm. Additional practices may be called as necessary. Tardiness will be punished. The competition cheerleading team will enter 3 or more competitions throughout the school year. Competitions begin at the end of October and go through November. The competition team will learn its routine during a rigorous summer practice schedule. Practices continue once a week throughout the school year. Competition cheerleaders will also be required to attend tumbling classes. Tumbling classes and most of the Competition practices will be held at North Coast Allstarts in Berea. A tentative schedule will be provided at the tryouts. Cheerleaders can choose to try out only for the competition team and do not need to be on either the Football or Basketball cheerleading squads. However, if you tryout for varsity Football or

4 Basketball cheerleading, you must also tryout for competition cheerleading. Tumbling skills will be given higher consideration in filling spots for the competition squad than they are given for other squads. Attendance: The competition squad CANNOT afford girls missing practice. There are strict attendance policies for the competition squad and specific details will follow if you make the squad. DO NOT try out if you cannot attend practices. GRADES All cheerleaders must meet the Ohio High School Athletic Association and Parma City Schools eligibility requirements to participate. Eligibility is based on the previous marking period in which the athlete will be participating. The OHSSA states that all student athletes must pass courses whose value would be the equivalent of 5 credits for the year. PCSD requires that students maintain a certain GPA. [Freshman year requires a 1.0 GPA; sophomore year requires a 1.25 GPA; junior and senior year requires a 1.5 GPA]. PHYSICAL HEALTH Each cheerleader must have a current completed physical on file before she can participate. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A CURRENT PHYSICAL BY THE FIRST WEEK OF PRACTICE, YOU WILL BE DISMISSED FROM THE SQUAD. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS! Cheerleaders are expected to maintain their health and physical stamina throughout the entire year. Use of alcohol, tobacco & other substances will not be tolerated and could result in dismissal from the squad. FUNDRAISERS Each year the coaches will establish the financial goals for the season, some of which will require participation in events or donations. Please be advised that each squad member and their family will share this responsibility and must participate in fundraising activities that go toward the squad. Fundraisers are often provided as an opportunity to reduce the out of pocket costs for parents. UNIFORM If you make a cheerleading squad you will be provided with a uniform that is property of Normandy High School. We do not guarantee that the uniform fits you perfectly, and in most situations, it will not. If you would like, you may purchase a uniform (approximately $200) to ensure that you receive the size that you would like. A $50 uniform deposit will be collected when the uniform is issued. You may not alter or damage the uniform. If the uniform is returned altered or damaged your $50 deposit check will be cashed. Coaches may also charge additional money if $50 does not cover the cost of the damages.

5 Cheerleaders are responsible for purchasing warmups, shoes, bows and pom poms (see financial responsibilities page). Uniforms are not to be loaned out or borrowed or worn by any non-cheerleaders. SOCIAL MEDIA Cheerleaders are representatives of the school and should be responsible when posting on social media. Do not post any pictures or comments on social media that could be construed as inappropriate. If coaches determine that a posting is inappropriate you will be punished. PARENT CONDUCT Cheerleading parents should be respectful to the coaches and the cheerleading program at all times. If a parent has an issue, question, comment or concern they should contact the coach to address the situation. 6 Financial Responsibilities There are both personal and group expenses to realize in order to have a cohesive and functional cheerleading squad. All cheer apparel and other expenses must be paid IN FULL PRIOR TO ORDERING. If expenses are not paid on the due date, coaches will consult with the parents and work to remedy the situation. Please be aware of the financial commitment BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO TRYOUT FOR CHEERLEADING. The following is a list of expenses for the year. Please understand there may be additional expenses. CONSIDER THESE EXPENSES AND OTHERS NOT LISTED BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO TRYOUT. *Parma City School District Athletic Fees/ Pay to Play -$150 per football/basketball season Due: 2 weeks before season starts *Competition Fee- $150 Competition Cheerleaders Only pays for choreography and competition fees. (There will be an additional cost for tumbling classes). 9 Normandy High School Cheerleading Tryouts (This page does not need to be returned) TRYOUT REQUIREMENTS At the clinics you will learn a cheer, dance and two chants. You will be required to perform the cheer, dance and one chant on Audition Day. Additionally, on Wednesday, April 16 th you will be scored on your jumps and tumbling. You must perform a toe-touch, double toe-touch, hurdler and pike jump. Your score will be based on execution. Tumbling is not required, however additional points will be given to girls with tumbling skills. You will receive points for each of the following skills that you perform: front walkover, back walkover, aerial, standing backhandspring, multiple standing backhandsprings, standing tuck, roundoff backhandspring, roundoff multiple backhandsprings, roundoff tuck, roundoff backhandspring tuck, roundoff backhandspring layout/full, toetouch backhandspring. Any tumbling skill you perform at tryouts must also be performed during the season. AUDITION DAY Each girl will be numbered and given the number and tryout partner at the end of the last day of clinics. You should wear a plain white shirt with number on front, dark shorts, proper shoes, and have your hair pulled back. When you are called upon, you will enter the gymnasium where you will perform all of the audition material for the judges. Once you have finished your audition you are free to leave. Any girl who enters the gymnasium without permission will be disqualified from the tryout. You must leave after you tryout. Return to Normandy at 9pm to learn if you ve made a squad.
