Calera Middle School Cheerleading Constitution Calera Middle School Cheerleaders are role models for the student body and are representatives of CMS in this community. All cheerleaders are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that exemplifies a model CMS student both on and off campus. Purpose: To promote and uphold school spirit Develop and exhibit god sportsmanship Promote unification of spectator cheering Build better relationships between schools ***Breaking any of the following regulations will result in disciplinary action.*** ACADEMIC & SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS In order to try out for the middle school squad, the student must be an incoming 7 th or 8 th grader. In order to try out, the student must be currently enrolled at Calera Middle School. The student must have a cumulative 2.0 GPA or at least a 70% average from first semester with no grade below a 65 in any class. No student can have an F, Incomplete, or NCA as a semester grade in any subject prior to tryouts. Credit Recovery grades will NOT be used to determine eligibility. In order to try out, we must receive a discipline clearance from the administration at any school the participant has attended this school year. Administration may not clear participants for any of the following reasons: Suspension, for any reason this school year Discipline referrals to the office for serious or numerous offenses Unpaid fees and/or fines Team members must remain in good standing with the school. All school violations are subject to additional cheerleading disciplinary action based on the punishment given by the school and the severity of the situation. Academic Probation for Grades: Report cards will be reviewed at the end of each grading period by the coach. Any cheerleader with a D or F in ANY class will be put on academic probation, which is outlined in the Shelby County Academics First policy. Inform the coach as soon as you know or think you might have a grade lower than a C. You cannot wait until report cards come out to inform the coach. The purpose of informing the coach of a possible low grade is so that the coach can try to help before the situation gets worse, not as punishment. An infraction will occur if you do not notify the coach prior to the time report cards come out. In cases when the Shelby County Cheerleader Constitution conflicts with the Calera Athletic Handbook, as cheerleaders, we are to abide by the Shelby County Cheerleader Constitution.
CONDUCT & RESPONSIBILITY Financial Responsibilities: Cheerleaders are expected to pay for all expenses pertaining to cheerleading including but not limited to camp, clinics, attire, etc. Fundraising will help with squad related expenses (such as uniforms) and cheerleaders are required to participate in fundraising. Cheerleaders will not be allowed to participate in cheerleading activities and/or tryout until all expenses from the previous year have been paid. Time Responsibilities: Cheerleading comes before other activities. Cheerleaders should not have employment during football or basketball season that may interfere with cheerleading activities (including post-season/playoff games). Cheerleaders should not be a member of any extracurricular/competition squad that may interfere with CMS cheerleading activities. Cheerleaders will be expected to not only attend games and practices, but to also make signs and banners, decorate the gym and school, plan and participate in pep rallies, provide drinks for visiting teams, load and unload equipment, etc. as directed by the coach. Cheerleaders should meet all deadlines set by the coach. Conduct Responsibilities: The use of profanity, tobacco, alcohol, or any illegal drug is strictly prohibited and punishable whether the offense is in private or public, team/school related or not, in uniform or not. Cheerleaders are expected to maintain a pleasant working relationship with their team members, the coach, the school, and the community. Any actions that inhibit this positive relationship will be punished. UNIFORMS & APPEARNACE Uniforms will be purchased through the cheerleading fund and are owned by the school. They are only to be worn in conjunction with cheerleading activities instructed by the coach. No part of a cheerleader s uniform should be worn by anyone except a member of the team without the coach s approval (includes sweatshirts, jackets, shoes, etc.) Non-uniform sweat pants may not be worn under a uniform skirt at any time, regardless of the weather, without permission from the coach. All uniforms must properly fit the cheerleaders and be altered at the cheerleader s expense. No cutting is allowed when having a uniform altered. The uniform companies do not guarantee a custom fit; therefore, it is up to the cheerleaders to make sure they fit properly. Cheerleaders should arrive for an event fully dressed in uniform (including hair up with ribbon) and remain in uniform until the event is over. If a cheerleader has a commitment outside of school after an event, the cheerleader should change completely. Hair should be clean and off the face with no elaborate or uncontrollable hairstyles. No unusual non-traditional hair dyes or colors will be permitted. Designated team hair ribbons should be worn with each uniform. Make-up should be minimal, water-and smear-free, and should complement the cheerleader uniform. Exceptions may be made with coach s approval in certain circumstances such as competition, pictures, or homecoming where more make-up may be deemed complementary.
No nail polish or acrylic nails are allowed while in uniform. Exceptions may be made with coach s approval in certain circumstances. No jewelry of any kind is allowed during practices, games, or pep rallies (includes studs, second hole earrings, etc.) Violation of any of the above mentioned rules at a game will result in sitting out that game until appearance is corrected (i.e. nail polish is removed, correct ribbon is found and worn ) GAMES, PRACTICES, CAMP, & ACTIVITIES For any missed game to be excused the cheerleader and/or her family must make the coach aware of the circumstances prior to the absence AND the proper documentation must be provided before the next practice. The only reason for an absence from a game to be excused is personal illness with proper documentation (i.e. doctor s note or parent note sent to school). A maximum of one parent note for illness will be accepted per semester. For absences other than personal illness, permission to have an excused absence must be requisitioned by the cheerleader in writing one week in advance of game time and approved by the coach. Cheerleaders must be present at school at least ½ day and must attend the last practice before the game or event in order to participate in the activity. School related functions that the coach has approved are the exception. Remember that an early dismissal before 11:30 a.m. or late check-in after 11:30 a.m. constitutes a school absence and the cheerleader will not be allowed to participate in the event of that day. If the cheerleader goes home sick from school, regardless of checkout time, she will not be allowed to attend the practice or game on that day. Cheerleaders must personally check with the coach before leaving school (early dismissal) on game or practice days, except in emergency situations. An early dismissal does not automatically excuse a cheerleader from missing practice. Failure to notify the coach beforehand will automatically result in an unexcused absence for practice. A cheerleader who is too ill to attend practice or game will not be able to attend any other event occurring at the same time. A cheerleader who is injured and cannot practice or participate will not be able to cheer until a doctor s release is obtained stating that she can resume cheerleading activities, including running, jumping, sitting for long periods, arm movements, or exercises. An injured cheerleader may be required to attend practice, even if the injury prevents participation. An injured cheerleader will sit with the coach, in uniform, during cheerleading games/activities in which they cannot participate. It is the parents responsibility to transport their daughter to and from games. The parent or legal guardian must present him/herself to the coach at the end of the game/function in order for their child to be released to them. A note/phone call from a parent is not sufficient. If your child will be riding with another parent, the parent must provide a signed statement giving his/her daughter permission, Parents are expected to pick up their daughters within 15 minutes of an event ending or the return to school from the event. Attendance at all practices, camps, and working days (even during the summer or during other holidays) is required. Tardies or unexcused absences from games, practices, fundraising, and other events will result in disciplinary action.
NO EXCUSED ABSENCES WILL BE GRANTED FOR THE MONTH PRECEEDING CAMP, except in extreme personal emergencies (e.g. hospitalization or extreme illness). Summer vacations should not be taken during scheduled practice times. Extenuating circumstances should be discussed with and approved by the coach in advance. During a game, a cheerleader should appear peppy, well groomed, and in command of any situation that may arise. Eating on the field, on the court, or in the stands is not allowed except during designated breaks and should be inconspicuous. A cheerleader should always be prepared with a drink (water or sports drink, NO SODAS) during games and practices. Cheerleaders should not initiate or maintain any conversation with others (including parents, relatives, boyfriends, friends, etc.) during football and basketball games. Cheerleaders should inform any relatives, friends, etc. that conversations will not be allowed during the game and must be held during breaks designated by the coach. Each cheerleader should focus her attention on the game and understand what is happening. Cheerleaders should not leave games before dismissed by the coach. They are expected to help clean area and put away props. Practices will be closed in all situations. No one except the coach and the cheerleaders are allowed in practice (except in cases when a choreographer or other cheer-related persons are needed). In order to participate in pep rallies, you CANNOT be on the no-break list for ANY reason. If you are not allowed to attend the pep rally according to school rules that all others are expected to follow, there will be no exceptions made just because you are a cheerleader. The use of cell phones is prohibited at camp and practices. You may bring your cell phone with you but can only use it at times designated by the coach. The coach may take up cell phones at night and return them in the morning to ensure that rules are being followed. Camp is your time to focus on the TEAM without any distractions. All camp dues must be paid BEFORE you can go to camp. CAPTAIN & CO-CAPTAIN The middle school captain and co-captains are chosen through a process that includes a squad vote, candidate scores, and teacher recommendations. In order to be eligible for captain or co-captain of the Middle School squad, a candidate must be an incoming 8 th grader who was on the squad for the entire previous year. The coach may make other exceptions as extenuating circumstances arise. The captain must be able to accept responsibility and be an exceptional leader. She must be able to work with the coach and support the coach s decisions concerning the team. She must know the rules for the team and set an example for other cheerleaders to follow. Should the captain be unable to complete her duties, the co-captain will step in and assume the responsibilities. A cheerleader must cooperate with the captain and co-captain. The captain is in full charge of the team and is responsible to the coach for her actions. All decisions made by the captain are to be abided by without dispute if these decisions are within the captain s authority. It is the responsibility of the captain and co-captain to inform the coach of any and all infractions of the rules by ANY member of the squad. Disciplinary action, if warranted, will be taken. Failure on the part of the captain or co-captain to abide by this requirement will result in disciplinary action and/or removal from the position.
The captain should work closely with the coach in forming the agenda at practices. When necessary, the captain should run/lead practices with full authority and cooperation from the team. The captain will be responsible for pep rally schedules (including music) being submitted to the coach and approved before the Monday of each pep rally. The captain will be responsible for assigning pep rally, game, hall, and fence sign responsibilities. The captain will be the leader of the team and should be allowed to lead with authority. She is responsible to the coach for her actions and is given the right to lead the team by the coach. The team should fully cooperate with her. The captain and co-captain will decide uniforms and school attire for game days. They will also be responsible for creating, or assigning someone to create, locker signs and CDs for pep rallies. The captain and co-captain are responsible for checking to make sure all cheerleaders have an equal/similar number of locker signs to hang and that the cheerleaders hang them up by the given deadline. If they did not hang the signs by the deadline, the captain and/or cocaptain need to report the cheerleaders to the coach. The captain and co-captain will work with the coach in deciding camp apparel and anything else the coach deems necessary. If the captain or co-captain does not fulfill her duties, she may be removed from her position. PROBATION & DISMISSAL Probation and/or dismissal from the cheerleading team is based on the severity/number of infractions committed by a cheerleader. The list of infractions and resulting disciplinary infractions will be provided to the cheerleaders prior to tryouts. Any changes to this list must be provided to the student and parent in writing BEFORE the changes take effect. If a cheerleader is on probation, she will still be responsible for any required duties for that period of time. She will not be allowed to cheer at games or pep rallies. She will wear her uniform to the games during her probation period and will sit with the coach during games. If medical problems arise during the season that would hinder a cheerleader s athletic ability or put her in physical danger during cheerleading activities and a doctor s release is not given, the cheerleader will be dismissed from the team (this includes but is not limited to pregnancy, hospitalization for a chronic illness, etc.) If a cheerleader is dismissed from the team, or voluntarily resigns her position, she forfeits her right to try out as cheerleader for CMS in the future. The accumulation of offenses begins the day the new team is posted and does not end until the first tryout clinic the following year. Automatic Dismissal From Squad: Possession/Use of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or other illegal substances Suspension from school for ANY reason or Alternative School for ANY reason Publication, by ANY person, of a cheerleader participating in illegal or immoral behavior on a public forum (includes social networking sites) Being arrested for ANY reason Fighting (in or out of uniform, on or off school property) Overall average of lower than 70 for a 9 week grading period (2 nd offense) Receipt of a 9 week grade of F in a core class
