1 Magnolia Springs Lexington 2701 Magnolia Springs Dr. Lexington, KY LLIVE THE LIFE YOU LOVE Magnolia Happenings October 2016 Concierge Hours: Mon-Fri 8AM-8PM Sat & Sun 10AM-6PM Lexington Staff: Executive Director: Michael Berg Community Relations: Gabriel Huffman Resident Services: Shannon Long Around the World: Greece Starting back in January of this year, all the Life Enrichment departments from all the Magnolia Springs communities got together and planned a way to have seniors travel the world without having to actually leave the comfort of their homes. Around the World became that way. Every quarter all the Magnolia Springs will explore the culture, history and society of a country. We at the Lexington community are exploring Greece for this quarter. 2 October 2016 RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT: Opal & Ernest M. Opal and Ernest are our newest residents. They both were born and raised in London, Kentucky. They have been married 31 fabulous years. They have two grown boys, two granddaughters and a grandson that they enjoy spending time with. Ernest is retired from the Navy in the submarine service. Opal has always been in customer service, specifically sales. She has sold many things, from cars to clothes. They have traveled across the country to Bremerton, Washington, about 3,000 miles one way, to attend Ernest 20year submarine service reunion. Opal said it was the best trip that she has ever TAKEN. They love to travel to new places and to would love to see more of the country. Opal has worked in six different states and chose to be with us in Kentucky closer to her family. Along with enjoying to travel, they love to try new foods; particularly, Mexican restaurants. They are always up for a new and fun adventure! They each have their own hobbies of making beaded jewelry and Ernest enjoys golf, as well as target shooting. They don t have a complaint about Magnolia Springs. Opal and Ernest love that the employees are genuinely caring. The food from Chef Tanya is among their favorites as well! You ll find them relaxing with their sweet pup; stop by and say hi! 3 Amanda s Food for Thought Page 3 Juicing is the process of extracting juice from fresh fruits or vegetables. Over the past couple of months I have been introduced to juicing by our Life Enrichment Director, James Collins. Some of benefits to juicing is that it can promote weight loss, boost your immunes system, increase energy, reduce the risk of cancer, and support brain health. It can also be a way for parents to get their children to have more variety of fruits by juicing them instead. There are some drawbacks however such as using too many sugary fruits, not getting enough fiber, and it doesn't always keep you full for long. So some good tips to creating the better juicing recipe is to skip the sugary fruits such as bananas and pineapples, put more leafy greens in your recipe, and focus on making more of a green juice rather than a fruit juice. James and Chef Tanya both have some great recipes, and we will be putting them to the test during one of our fun taste testing activities. May the best juice recipe win! 4 October 2016 Page 4 Employee Spotlight: KIM CAREGIVER Kim is one of our fantastic caregivers. She was born and raised in Lexington, KY and will be turning 23 years old this month. Kim has also recently graduated from EKU with her Bachelor s degree in psychology. Kim s position prior to Magnolia Springs was Champs Entertainment Center where she worked 6 1/2 years. She was a stellar employee and earned awards such as Outstanding Dedication and Service Award 2 years in a row. Kim was very involved with the Henry Clay High School Band. She started participating in high school marching band while in middle school with the colorguard then transferred to trumpet upon entering her Freshman year. Her Senior year she was able to say she had been in band for a total of 6 years and was the Trumpet Section Leader as well. Some of Kim s favorite activities to do outside of work are going to the gym to lift heavy weights, hiking, boating, painting, and thinking profoundly while writing her blog. Kim loves any meal with chicken in it and loves to drink her pepsimax. Some fun facts about Kim is that she graduated college with the Dean s Award and Outstanding Senior Award in Psychology. She also never went below a B with her academics, and she is ambidextrous. Kim has enjoyed traveling upstate New York and Florida, but would also like to visit the Caribbean Islands. Kim has loved coming to Magnolia Springs! She has found that there is always something funny to laugh about and have a good time with staff and resi- Save the Date! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!. 6 October 2016 Page 6 A Letter from your Executive Director It s finally here and we couldn t be more excited: Fall! There are so many joys that come along with Fall such as pumpkins and mums, a hot bonfire on a cool evening, chili competitions and football and the reminder that all of these things are made that much more special when you can share them with the people that matter most. As the months roll on since our opening, we are grateful for all of the individuals that have given us the opportunity to get to know them. They have become family to us all. Here at Magnolia Springs, events and activities are fun, sure, but they are nothing without celebrating them together within the context of community. I encourage both our staff, residents, and their families not to let this Fall season fly by. Stop and take a minute to enjoy the cooler weather around our bonfire with a friend; take the time to search for the best pumpkin in a field or at the store with your kids or grandkids; or grab a good book and a cup of pumpkin spice latte on the front porch as the sun sets. With all that we do, we want to remain focused on the relationships that surround us. Take a look at our monthly activities calendar or find a staff member to see how we can best serve you this Fall. What memories do you have of Fall from when you were a child? We d love to reminisce with you. Who do you miss spending time with? Invite them to one of our Fall festivities. Whatever you do this Fall, keep CELEBRATING LIFE each and every day with those around you.

Taking a proactive approach to one s health should be a top priority. It is essential for disease prevention and detection, as well as one s peace-of-mind and independence Some of the health related activities you ll find on October s calendar are Juicing, Yoga, Dr. Appointments, and Blood Pressure Checks.
