Dear Finney Families, The beautiful May weather is upon us which brings with it many opportunities to take learning outdoors! Some of our classes have already made their hands dirty weeding the raised garden beds beside the school. Since then they have begun planting seedlings they started indoors before the weather warmed up. If you happen to walk by the garden beds you will notice the signs that children have made to mark the gardens and remind others to handle with care. Children are monitoring the gardens regularly to notice the growth and changes of their plants. As you can see in the list of Important Dates, May also brings with it many outdoor physical activity events as well! We look forward to the variety of learning experiences ahead! A friendly reminder from the office: If you are calling to leave a message to report your child will be absent, please leave a message at the office, rather than with the classroom teacher. 3 Finney Celebrates Earth Day, April 21, 2016 Room 8 Shop and Swap Did you know that plastic can take hundreds of years to decompose? For example, a plastic water bottle can take about 450 years to break down. There are two main reasons why this is dangerous: The first reason is landfills. When we put our garbage in landfills it can pollute our air, land and water. This means we are hurting our earth. The second reason is because the pollution is getting into our food chain. For example, we learned that fish think that some of the small pieces of plastic are food. Then we eat the fish. That is not healthy for us or the earth. We can try to help with the problem by reusing some of the items that we don t use anymore, instead of throwing them in the garbage. We can also donate items we don t need or organize a shop and swap. Our class organized a Shop and Swap on April 21st. We brought gently used items that we didn t need anymore, to school. Some examples were electronics, jewelry, toys, games, clothes, stuffies and more. We took home anything that we needed for ourselves or our family. Some students even chose items that they could give to friends. It was like going shopping in our classroom- but for free! We only had 4 items leftover and donated them to the community of Cross Lake. You could try to organize your own Shop and Swap to take care of the earth because the earth takes care of us! 4 Celebrating Earth Day Thank you to Madame Trudeau s Grade 4/5 Class who hosted a school wide Earth Day Assembly on April 21st! Sustainability Considerations... The graph below represents water consumption at Finney from March present. At Finney we were able to reduce consumption costs from $6000/quarter to $1500/quarter with the installation of low flow faucets. Seven Oaks Maintenance is continuing to target water consumption throughout the Division. Page 4 Newsletter Title

Divisional Flag Football Tournament May 20 Gr. 4 & 5 Nomads Field Tennis Festival June 2 Gr. 3 5 Kildonan Tennis Club Thank you to all the students, teachers and families who participated in our grades 3/4/5 spring concert at the Maples Collegiate Commons on April 20th! The performers took us on a singing, dancing, fiddling, drumming, recorder-ing, xylophone-ing journey across Canada, and by the end we felt like we had truly been everywhere, man! Aboriginal Drum Workshops with Alison Cox In preparation for our concert, Rooms 3, 4 and 8 worked with one of our divisional Aboriginal Education teachers to learn more about First Nations drumming and singing. Here's what some of them had to say about their experience: - I liked how all the drums sounded different and how loud they were. The first time we went to drumming Alison told us stories, but after the first time we practiced the songs. -TG - I really enjoyed learning a new language and learning the water song. I liked being the one to carry the water and getting to play on the big drum and the small drums, AND getting to play them at the concert. AS - I really enjoyed playing the drums. It was so amazing learning a new thing like the water song and the drumming. The thunderbird sounds we made were amazing. I really enjoyed playing. CR - The drumming was pretty amazing. I liked the part when we beat the drums hard, and also the singing. NS - I liked the singing and being with Alison. It was really fun. My favourite part was singing and being in the group of five playing the drums. LV Many thanks to Alison Cox for her time, knowledge and generosity!

(Balanced Experiential Education Program) Will be offered to Constable Finney students Gr. 1 5 By the Seven Oaks School Division FREE OF CHARGE BEEP starts Tuesday, July 5 th and runs Monday to Friday until August 12 th 9:00 am to 3:00 pm daily at Finney School Watch for more info and a registration form in late May BEEP will include: - Free Breakfast Program - Exciting Hands-on Learning Activities - Free Weekly Outings on School Buses - Indoor and Outdoor Sports - Art and Music - Cooperative Games - Special Theme Days - Loads of Fun!
