1 National Honor Society Issue 2 January 2014 T he High School East Honor Society held its Winter Induction on December 16, ongratulations to the following inductees: Gabrielle Ball Emily Koerner Kathleen Macalalag Brenden Montemurno assidy Olsen Stephanie Schieder Faith Shank Victoria Surette Zachary Sylvester Taylor Wallace I n s i d e t h i s i s s u e : Senior of the Month 2 Holiday Pep Rally 3 Upcoming Play 4 Guidance News 4 Holiday Giving 4 During the ceremony advisor, Ms. Laura Morgan also presented the elected officers with their gold/blue tassels. Mr. Rutter reminded the students and their families of the importance of community service.

2 I S S U E 2 Seniors of the Month ongratulations to the November Seniors of the Month, Meaghan Sullivan and Brenden Montemurno. Meaghan has been accepted to Penn State, Rutgers University, Drexel and Rowan. She is still waiting to hear from the University of Maryland which is her top choice. Meaghan plans on majoring in chemical engineering. in our running and practiced daily to continue to improve. At these practices, we had many great times, and running in the late summer and early school year brought great weather with it. My cross country season was extremely enjoyable and our team saw many different successes. She is the Student Body President, chairman of the Safety Team, a member of the National Honor Society and a High School East Ambassador. Meaghan is also the captain of varsity soccer, basketball and lacrosse team at East. It was such a great feeling when I was nominated. Being nominated is such an honor because there are so many other well-deserving seniors. One of the most memorable moments would have to be junior year during soccer season. I scored the winning penalty kick against South to help advance our team to the state semi finals. Brenden has applied to Rowan, NJIT, Lehigh, Stevens, Princeton University and MIT. He plans on majoring in chemical engineering. He is a member of the National Honor Society, History lub, Math/Science lubs and a High School East Ambassador. Brenden has also run track and cross country. He replied to the nomination by saying, excited, proud and thankful. I was His most memorable moment, My friends had been telling me to run cross country for some time; however, I was still unsure whether I would enjoy it or not. Despite this fear, I chose to join the team my senior year with a few other friends. My initial fears were completely wrong. we all saw improvements ongratulations to the December Seniors of the Month, Emily Koerner and Gilligan Greenlow. Emily plans on travelling this summer before college. She wants to attend either the University of Scranton or Quinnipiac University and major in occupational therapy. Emily is a member of the National Honor Society, Key/Interact lub, History lub, the Writing enter and Orchestra. Upon hearing of her nomination Emily replied, I was completely shocked. Luckily I was in my study hall with Mr. ohen and I could recover while being congratulated by one of my favorite t e a c h e r s h e r e a t E a s t. (continued on page 5)

3 I S S U E 2 P A G E 3 Holiday Pep Rally T he second annual Holiday Pep Rally was held on Friday, December 20, Senior class president, Billy aruso and vice president, Meaghan Sullivan were the emcees. Students enjoyed watching class representatives fight for the honor of winning such contests as: Ball in a cup Our Advanced horus also entertained us Donut eating contest Ugly sweater contest Showing her sportsmanship and holiday spirit was our principal, Mrs. Anne Baldi who participated in a Santa Dating Game. Mrs. Baldi got to question 3 of our male teachers (each portraying Santa) and select the one she felt would be the best date. Wrap a teacher The High School East heerleaders put on a holiday routine to Oh Santa by Mariah arey.

Toys for children of all ages were purchased by students, faculty and staff for their Toys for Tots campaign. 5 I S S U E 2 P A G E 5 (continued from page 2) All South Jersey winners One of the most memorable moments I had a East was the night of a benefit concert with the East orchestra directed by Mrs. DeGoey. We planned this concert from the summer to December of last year. Originally for the food pantry, we changed the fundraiser to collect toys and gift cards for Sandy victims and the holiday season. It was truly amazing to see months of planning and hard work be performed and unfold in front of me. ongratulations to Justin Romano who made first chair bass clarinet of the All South Jersey Wind Ensemble and to Reed Ricotta who was accepted into the All South Jersey Symphonic band on trumpet. Gilligan plans on furthering his education at Lehigh University majoring in either sports medicine or engineering He is a High School East Ambassador and a member of FLA and the winter and spring track teams. He has been the thrower captain for both seasons. One of his more memorable moments at East is...beating the sophomore class relay record with my friend and relay partner Devonte Rodriguez. Gilligan replied to the nomination by saying, When I was informed, I felt honored to be recognized for such an admirable title.
