1 October Volume 2: Issue 1 International Student Services Newsletter Inside this issue: Minnesota Weather Minnesota Weather 1 Halloween 2 Studying Tips 4 Event Calendar 5 Are you ready for this Minnesota weather? Fall has started, the color of the leaves on the trees are starting to change, and the cold breeze will start coming in soon. In the Fall, here in Minnesota, the average high temperature is 60 degrees, and the average low temperature is 25 degrees. Be sure that you are prepared for this kind of weather. Some things that you may need to keep yourself warm for this upcoming weather are: a jacket, sweaters, sweatshirts, long pants, shoes that can keep your feet warm for a long period of time, boots for when there is rain, and lots more! These things can also help you for the winter, adding on gloves, mittens, and scarves. But, we don t really want to think about winter yet, do we? Photo credit Fahad Bin Ojaiban Do you have a photo you would like to share? Send it is iss@csp.edu Special points of interest: Preparing for the cold Halloween Help on how to study for exams Successful Saudi Arabian Night! 2 Page 2 International Student Services Newsletter Halloween Volume 2: Issue 1 Brief History of Halloween Halloween is celebrated on October 31st. The word Halloween is short for All Hallow s Evening. Halloween originated in the ancient Celtic festival Samhain. The ancient Gael culture celebrated Samhain at the end of the harvest season, and stock supplies to prepare for winter. The Gaels believed that the boundaries of the world of the living and the world of the dead overlapped on October 31st. That event would cause the dead to come back to life and spread sickness and damage crops. Costumes were worn on the 31st of October as disguise so the evil spirits will not notice who the people of the living were. Modern Day Halloween On Halloween night, kids go out in costumes walking door to door, knocking the door and saying trick-or-treat. Then the owner of the house passes out candy to the children. Around the time of Halloween at events, some events may hold costume contests. These contests determine whose costume is the most scariest or creative, and they award that person with a prize.

3 Volume 2: Issue 1 First Annual Saudi Arabian Night Out first annual Saudi Arabian Night was a huge success, with more than 180 people in attendance for the event. Throughout the very special evening, guests were transported back to Saudi Arabia through song, poetry, dance, music, and food! The event was an excellent celebration of Saudi Arabian National Day. Thank you to ALL who put in some much time and effort to make the celebration run smoothly.

4 Volume 2: Issue 1 Study Tips Midterms are near, and you also have exams here and there! Do you have trouble studying for your exams? Even if you don t, here are some tips that can help you study for your exams, or help improve your study skills. Don t do all of your studying the night before the test Be in a comfortable and quiet environment Study the most important information first Take breaks!! Make sure that you understand the material. Don t just try to memorize information. Don t study pass the time you usually go to sleep Get a good night s sleep Eat breakfast Read through your notes and high light important information Ask your professor questions!!!!!! These are only some tips on studying. Another way to study is in study groups. A potential study group consists of classmates who are serious about the class, and of course the test. Before the test, you can have someone test you on the material you will get tested on.
