1 WARRIOR WORDS SEPTEMBER, 2017 ACTIVITY PASSES Activity passes will be available for purchase at any varsity sporting event from the ticket seller or in the office. Passes are good for all HLV regular season football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, softball and baseball contests. Prices will remain the same as last year. HLV district senior citizens may request a free pass. K-12 Students $45.00 Adult $80.00 Family $ EARLY DISMISSALS EVERY WED 2:20 NURSE S NOTES Flu shots will be offered on November 6 at HLV from 3:30-6:00. These will be offered by the Poweshiek County Health Dept. Details will follow later. Grant Wood hearing checks will be done on September 11 for K, 1, 2, 5 students along with new students to the district that don t show a hearing test, and some students with known hearing loss. Parents or guardians not wishing their child to be tested should notify the office in writing. If you have concerns about your child s hearing, please contact Nurse Joan Robinson. PICTURE DAY School pictures will be on Friday, Sept. 8 this year. POP TABS Pop tabs will be collected again this year for the Ronald MacDonald House. You may send them in with your student or drop them off in the office.

2 HOMECOMING ACTIVITIES Homecoming festivities will kick off on Monday, Sept. 18. Dress-up days for students will be as follows: Monday-Merry Holiday (dress with your favorite holiday attire, such as-red, white, blue ugly Christmas sweater etc. Tuesday- Tourist Tuesday- (safari, Hawaiian shirts, fanny packs, cameras) Wednesday- Workout Wednesday- get pumped up in your workout gear-(sweatbands, sweats) Thursday-Class day-each class gets to pick a theme Friday- Warrior Fan Daylet s see those Warrior Superfans in red and black. A reminder that all dress-up costumes must follow the HLV dress code. NO masks or weapons. Homecoming shirts and buttons will be available for purchase. The Booster Club will be hosting a supper on Tuesday evening followed by the Donkey Baseball Game. (see the article) The parade will be Thursday evening starting at 6:00 with the pep rally to follow in the high school gym. The king and queen will be crowned at the pep rally. VOLLEYBALL PARENT S NIGHT The volleyball parent s night will be held on Thursday, Sept. 14. Parents will be admitted to the game free. BIG G RECEIPTS The school will again be collecting Big G receipts. Receipts dated between Sept. 1, 2017 and March 31, 2018 will be accepted. You may turn them in at any time during the school year. We are then able to purchase recess and classroom items. Thank you for your support in the past. NEW ASSEMBLIES IN THE ELEMENTARY New! Star Learner Pep Assemblies!! To encourage your K6 students to be intentional about learning, the elementary will hold short assemblies once a month this school year. Each class will take a turn planning skits, songs, games and/or chants to celebrate the effort of learning by focusing on a different learner habit each month. Classes will also compete to win a traveling trophy. We "pump up" athletes to do their best; students can benefit from this too. Your children have so much possibility in front of them as they take advantage of all they can learn at HLV. Each one can decide to be a "Star Learner." Together, we'll cheer them on!!

3 YEARBOOKS The yearbooks are in. You may pick them up from Mrs. Smith. CONCESSION STAND Help is needed in the concession stand for home varsity, JV and JH football games and also high school volleyball games. Please contact Ellie Hawkins if you can help out. You may also check out the Facebook page HLV home game concession stand or check out the schedule that is posted at both concession stands. This can count for Silver Cord hours for high school students. HELP NEEDED FOR YOUTH FOOTBALL The youth football team is looking for help with concessions, field workers, etc for the Sunday afternoon games on Sept. 10 and Oct. 1. Contact Lori Kolesar if you can help out. JOB SHADOWS AND WINTER/SPRING INTERNSHIPS All juniors and seniors are eligible to complete one job shadow each year. I strongly encourage all students to try on at least one potential career before graduation. Applications for job shadows are due on September 15th and needs online parent approval. Students can access the application on the HLV website under the Career and College Counseling tab. 45 hour Internships are also available for the winter and spring sessions for any junior or senior who would like to complete one. This application will open on September 25th and close on November 1st. These applications can also be found on the HLV website under Career and College Counseling tab. JUNIOR COLLEGE FAIR All juniors will have the opportunity to travel to Kirkwood on September 13th to attend an Eastern Iowa College Fair. Hundreds of colleges, universities, and technical school will converge on Kirkwood's Michael J. Gould Recreation Center for students to begin the task of identifying post-secondary institutions that would be the best path to obtain their goals and dreams. The juniors will leave HLV Jr/Sr High School at 8:30 AM to travel to Cedar Rapids and will be back in time to eat lunch at HLV before going on with the rest of their day.

The students will complete a career inventory, begin applying to colleges and/or universities of their choice, searching for scholarships, and other needed actions. Donkey Baseball Tuesday September 19 th at 6:00 Located at the softball field The Booster Club is having a donkey baseball game so come out and watch students, coaches, teachers and community members play baseball all while riding a donkey!! Tickets prices (tickets available in the office they also will be sold at home volleyball and home football games) Adults: $10 in advance $13 at the door Kids: $7 in advance $ 10 at the door Anyone is welcome to play if you would like to be on at team the cost is $20 you must be at least 16 years of age and have your parent sign a waiver. You can also make a $20 donation to nominate someone to play.
