1 2015 Council Rock South Marching Band Welcome to one of the largest and most successful organizations here at Council Rock South. The marching band is a family of musicians and performers who work together to foster a spirit of teamwork, school spirit and a passion for music and the performing arts. The marching band performs at Football Games, Band Competitions, Parades, and other community events. The friends you make in marching band may be some of your best friends throughout high school and beyond. The memories you make will stay with you forever! What do we do in COLOR GUARD? During Mini Camp and over the summer, the marching band practices the basics of marching and playing while learning the music of the 2015 field show. The staff of the band creates a show that is uniquely suited to the members of the current band, including the drill formations that correlate to the music. Each member of the band is KEY! There is no bench in the marching band! Every student is a starting player, a visual soloist, and an essential cast member needed to make the drill formations, music and choreography that we perform. In the fall, we work on perfecting our 2015 production to make it the best it can be. We continue to perform at football games, but we also begin the band competition season. Band competitions exist to foster a spirit of camaraderie amongst the many bands, while offering a performance opportunity where the band members are the star attraction! This year South will compete in their third National Championship Contests! How often do we rehearse? In the fall, we generally rehearse as follows: Mondays: 3:00 5:30pm Horns 6:00pm 8:30 pm Percussion and Guard Tuesdays: OFF Wednesdays: 3:00 5:30pm Full Band Thursdays: 3:00 5:30pm Full Band Fridays: Times TBA Football Game You will note that in September, and at other times, there are several differences due to Holidays and School Events. I am delighted that you are joining our large and diverse family. I can t wait to get started on our 2015 show! -Mr. Burns
2 Color Guard FAQ s What is it? Modern color guard is a combination of the use of flags, sabers, mock rifles, and other equipment, as well as dance and other interpretive movement. Color guard is often referred to as the sport of the arts. Do we buy our Uniforms? The South Color Guard members that participate in the marching band, do not purchase their fall uniforms. Members of the winter guard (the wonderful and amazing thing that color guard folks do after marching band) usually DO purchase that costume with opportunities to use fundraisers in order to defray that cost. The choice of costume will be determined by the director, and may vary to suit the program. Often times, the costume of the color guard will reflect the theme or concept of the show. The cost of costume parts and accessories will be determined by the band director. Here is what 2015 fall color guard members must purchase: Dance Shoes* Socks* Undergarments* Gloves* Make Up Hair accessories *An order form will be provided for these items. Specific information about these items will be provided at a later date. Do we buy our Equipment? Flags and poles will be provided for you. At color guard camp, flag bags will be distributed to new students in the color guard. Students interested in Rifle will be required purchase one through the school before they are allowed to perform on rifle. I am delighted that you are joining our large and diverse family. I can t wait to get started on our 2015 show! -Mr. Burns
