Welcome Aboard Welcome to the Oceanside High School Pirate Marching Band and Color Guard. Our Program has maintained a rich tradition of excellence and we are glad you have chosen to be a part of that tradition. Our members are involved in concerts, trips, contests, and athletic/social events. Marching Band and Color Guard performs at home football games and marching band competitions from September through December. Our Winter Guard and Winter Drum Line competes from February to April. The Oceanside High School Marching Band and Color Guard promotes and encourages academics excellence. Music performances and rehearsals are compatible with the student s academic responsibilities. Our Goals are to Teach: Teamwork Discipline Responsibility Organization Self-sufficiency How to learn This Student Handbook is intended as a guide for all students and their parents involved in the program. Hopefully you will find answers and information about our activities, traditions, responsibilities and procedures for rehearsals and performances. I would like to stress the importance of parents participation with our Music Boosters. The Boosters, through the volunteer support they provide, are the foundation of our program. Participation in our Boosters is a great way for parents to support the education of their children. Please read this handbook carefully. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me either through at mark.phelps@oside.k12.ca.us or by phone at ex Please check the schedule for the season and mark the dates in your family calendar. Our web site is a good source for information regarding our program. Again, Welcome Aboard, it s going to be an exciting ride! Mark Phelps Director of Instrumental Music Oceanside High School - 2 -

Responsibilities of Staff and Student Leaders The Director, Mark Phelps oversees the program. He is responsible for all grades, coordination of students, staff and boosters. The Associate Director, Gary Backlund organizes and runs rehearsals, writes the music, designs and charts the field show. All instructors are experts in their fields and provide quality instruction to our students. The Drum Majors, Horn Sergeant, and Band President are the student leaders of the overall band. They lead at practices and competitions and require all students cooperation and respect. They are also the first associates to the Directors. Section and Guard Leaders provide directions and information to the students and should consult first for any questions or concerns. Responsibilities of Members The Members of the Band and Color Guard have a responsibility to: School: follow school rules and be representatives of the Student Body Each Other: respect the rights, property and feelings of others Attendance: attend all Marching Band rehearsals and performances School Property: care for and maintain all Marching Band equipment such as instruments, uniforms, the band room, facilities, music stands, music, etc Finances: pay Fair Share on time (students must be current in their account to perform) Instruments: care for his or her own instrument. This includes turning it over to the equipment crew prior to departure and collecting it upon arrival back at school Performance Groups Marching Band trains members in the areas of music, marching and movement. Development of leadership and teamwork will be stressed. Performances include: football games, local parades, and several competitions throughout the Southern California area. This course is a PE class and fulfills one semester of the Physical Education requirement at OHS. All members especially new member should have concurrent enrollment in an instrumental music class. Color Guard/Winter Guard is part of the Marching Band in the Fall Semester. Winter Guard has an additional competitive season 2 nd Semester and performs in competitive circuits in the Southern California area. Color/Winter Guard members must enroll in 6 th period Marching PE and 7 th period Pageantry Drum Line is a part of both the Marching and Concert programs. The Drum Line competes throughout the winter and spring. Enrollment in an instrumental music class is a prerequisite Wind Ensemble (2 nd Semester) performs major band literature of the highest level for advanced instrumental students. Permission of the instructor and/or audition is required to be in this class. Performances include concerts, festivals, rehearsals, and clinics may be added. 4 Competitions A Marching Band and Color Guard field competition is a seven to eleven minute show made up of music and movement on a football field. Performance is judged on music, visual presentation and general effect. Color Guard and soloists contribute the overall score. There is also usually separate Color Guard and Percussion judging. All students are a vital part of the show and are expected to attend all performances. Failure to attend the show affects the performance of the people around them and our score. A Drum Line competition is a four to seven minute shows made up of music and movement on a basketball court. The Drum Line season is from December to May A Winter Guard competition is a four to seven minute show with dance, flags, sabers, and rifles with recorded music on a basketball court. The Winter Guard season is from December to May. Ask your student for the Band Update that will be sent home with them a few days prior to each competition. Please note the destination, time of departure, time of the competition and approximate time of return at the school. Consider attending some or all of these events. It means more to your student than they will probably tell you. Bring stadium seats or other items for comfort. (Bringing your own food is always a good idea, however, coolers are not allowed in some stadiums). All tournaments have concession stands. Parents who attend competitions should expect to pay the regular spectator admission price of $7 to $15. The truck must be loaded with instruments and equipment before we can leave the school. Our equipment crew has the responsibility of loading and unloading equipment and uniforms. All students have the responsibility of having their equipment in cases and uniforms in the directed locations before we load. Each student is ultimately responsible for his or her own equipment and uniform. Band students sit as a group in a designated area. All chaperones will need to sit in this area as well. We cheer for all bands and stand when the performance warrants. We recognize the hard work and dedication of all students. Appropriate clothing is important. Days can be very warm followed by damp, crisp nights. Come prepared with several layers of clothing, including green jackets, umbrellas, and blankets according to the weather. Whenever possible wear and use items of the school colors green and white. PLEASE PICK UP YOUR STUDENT WITHIN ½ HOUR OF THE END OF A GAME, COMPETITION OR REHEARSAL. Communication The Handbook is updated yearly and distributed to students. Monthly Booster Meetings held on the 2 nd Tues. of the month in the band room at 7:00 p.m. Updates are sent to students and parents via school loop. Please register on school loop to receive these important updates. The Website provides up-to-date information on Oceanside High School Instrumental Music events Written and verbal updates are given to students weekly

Boosters The Oceanside High School Music Booster Organization is a nonprofit organization consisting of parents who recognize the value of maintaining the visual and performing arts as a vital part of educational curriculum. Since its inception, the Boosters organization has provided volunteer labor, materials, and funds to support all aspects of the Band and Color Guard program at Oceanside High School. The Boosters are involved in a wide variety of activities including fundraising, chaperoning, concessions, logistical support and many others. We encourage you to attend the Band Booster Meetings held the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm in the Band Room. You are all members of the Booster Club. Below are some of the areas in which the Boosters support the group. Operational Support: Chaperones, Equipment Crew, Uniforms Music Events: Hosting events such as, Concerts and the Band Spectacular Financial Management: Your Fair Share is collected for Marching Band, Color Guard, Winter Guard, Winter Percussion Student Accounts: the Boosters manage these accounts. Chaperones Parent Chaperones ARE ALWAYS NEEDED AND APPRECIATED. Volunteers are recruited prior to each function. If you would like to be on our list, please call ex and leave a message with the director, Mark Phelps. Most competitions limit the amount of chaperone tickets they provide for us to 1 per 15 students. This policy may cause us to limit the number of chaperones we take with us to several competitions Chaperones assist the students with various preparation needs including checking students for proper uniform appearance, help pass out water bottles and dispense plumes, moving equipment, etc. Chaperones on the bus will count the number of students on the bus to make sure it matches the section leader s check off sheet. Before we leave our competition Chaperones will also count the number of students and match it up with section leader s check off sheet. The bus driver is responsible for the safety of the passengers. Our job is to support them. We need to do everything they ask. Chaperones should also supervise the cleanliness of the bus. We want a group in which we can be proud. Chaperones act as the eyes and ears for the director. They inform the director immediately if there is a problem. Students are expected to show respect and accept direction from parents. If any student refuses to cooperate, Mr. Phelps should be informed immediately. Our goal is to provide a positive experience for everyone on our trip. Rehearsal Procedures All rehearsals will begin and end on time. Students should be back in the band room ready to be pickedup 15 minutes after the end of field rehearsals. We will warm up as a group. There is no individual warming up or playing in the main band room. Do not play your instrument in transit to and from the field. Do not talk during instruction. Raise your hand if you have a question. Do not leave the rehearsal area without permission. Put music folders, instruments and equipment in their proper storage places when not in use. Appropriate marching shoes must be worn. Practice attire must meet the school dress code

Attendance Policies Attendance at all scheduled performances, rehearsals, clinics and sectionals is required. Absences from outside the school day rehearsals and performances, regardless of the excuse, will be unexcused if they are not called in or ed prior to the absence. There is 24 hour-a-day voice mail. Students are expected to memorize the ex instrumental music room number. The philosophy behind this policy is in the work world employees are required to call in if they are unable to attend work. As in the work place there are serious consequences if this is not done. Parents please do not use attendance as a disciplinary tool. Work will not be accepted as an excuse. Tardiness or an absence due to another school activity will be excused providing notice is given two days in advance with the approximate times given. Grading Policy Grades will be determined using a point system based on the following and posted on School Loop. Rehearsal attendance and etiquette. Performance attendance and etiquette to include being on time and proper concert attire. Tests and assignments. (both written and playing) The loss of points due to excused absences from rehearsals or performances may be made up through additional practice and/or extra assignments. These points must be completed after arrangement and approval with the teacher within two weeks of the missed rehearsal or performance. Uniforms - Band Each student in the band will be issued a uniform and a hat. All uniforms and accessories will be kept in the uniform room. A chart will be posted with your name and identification numbers of each item issued to you. After each performance students are expected to hang up their uniforms up properly: hang pants with the creases matching and the coat snapped and hung with the curve of the hanger curving towards the back of the jacket. Band shoes are not to be kept in the garment bag. Excessive make-up or jewelry will not be worn while in uniform. Long hair will be pinned up for competition performances. Eating or drinking (except water) is not permitted while in uniform. Students are required to supply and wear with the uniform the following items: black marching shoes, (shoes will be made available for purchase) black gloves, a plain white T-shirt or Band white T-shirt, black socks, and shorts. Shoes must be kept shined. The shirt, socks and shorts must be clean. The white shirt and gym shorts must be worn to the performance event, as we usually do not have changing facilities. Those students who do not have a white T-shirt, black socks, and shorts on will not be allowed to put on a uniform. Student must return or replace all items checked out

Your Fair Share Unfortunately the State of California does not supplement the school district with enough money to run a successful Marching Band like ours. Therefore, we must ask the members of marching band to do their fair share with a contribution of $275. This amount is by far the lowest of any quality Marching Band in our area. Most bands require at least $400 or more. We will not deny anyone to participate in our groups because of financial difficulties. Our Booster Budget this year is $48,825. Your Fair Share and Fundraising pays for the cost of: $18,725 - Instructors and Clinicians $3,000 - Entry fees for Marching Band, Drum Line, Winter Guard, and Concert Festivals $11,250 - Music Arranging, Choreography, and Drill Writing $6,750 - Props and Equipment $4,300 - T-Shirts, Awards and Supplies Other costs for Band: Other costs for Color/Winter Guard: ASB Activity Transportation fee $80 (Collected by ASB) ASB Activity Transportation fee $80 Marching shoes - $28.
