1 April 17, 2014 Burns Flat-Dill City Schools BF-DC High School Prom The Burns Flat-Dill City High School Prom was Friday, April 11th, The theme for the Prom was Avatar. The decorations were completed by the junior class students and their parents. The junior class raised money all year and worked for weeks to make sure the Prom would be one that everyone remembered. The Promenade started at 7:00 p.m., followed by the prom banquet, and then the prom dance. The Trader Price Band including Mr. Chris Price provided the entertainment during the banquet and a DJ played music for the dance. There was a photo booth for individual and small group photos plus many people taking pictures throughout the evening. The Prom King Senior Brandon Stewart and the Prom Queen Senior Brooke Battles were crowned during the dance. The dance ended at 11:00 p.m. and the after prom party at the Water Zoo in Clinton started at midnight. The After Prom Party at the Clinton Water Zoo was a huge success. Many of the juniors and seniors along with their dates attended the party. A hypnotist entertained the students and many of them volunteered to be hypnotized. Several seniors that were hypnotized were Brittany Fricks, Andrew Maples, and Hannah Litaker. Juniors included Monica Julian, Andrew Carmona, Kaitlyn Utt, Tyler Trissell, Jose Chaverria,, and guests Taylor Knight and Josh Rejino. Toward the end of the After Prom Party prizes were given to the seniors and juniors. The prizes were furnished by the class parents. The entire evening was a huge success and the junior and senior class students would like to thank everyone involved in making the Prom so wonderful. I know that students, parents, and teachers are all on point and prepared for success on these exams. I hope you have kept up with the legislative sessions at the State Capital this year. I want to bring two specific bills to your attention. First, HB 2642; this bill would require the legislature to set aside $50 million per year over the next ten years, putting that money directly into the formula for per pupil expenditures. The purpose of this bill is to restore per pupil funding back to 2008 levels. I ask that you continue to monitor this bill and look for further updates from me. Second, SB 1654, this bill would reduce the number of tests taken by our 3-8th graders. This bill would remove the Social Studies testing from the OCCT testing programs. It is my opinion that removing any testing that places undo stress on students and teachers is a good thing to do. Again, I would encourage you to stay updated on this bill and I will be happy to provide information as it comes available. 2 April 17, 2014 Burns Flat-Dill City Schools Volume 53, Number 10 Meet the Administration and a Few Staff, and Teachers Gilbert Hutson has worked at BF-DC schools as a bus driver for 15 years. He came to work at BF-DC Schools so that he would be able to drive the field trip busses while his kids were in school. He said that while driving the busses he was able to see a lot of neat stuff. He has owned his own business for 34 years. His hobbies include spending time with his kids and family and playing free cell on his ipad. Mr. Hutson said about Burns Flat. I really enjoy living here and working for the school. I think it was a great place to raise my kids. Cliff McCown has worked at Burns Flat-Dill City High School for 6 years and is currently the high school principal. Before coming to BF-DC Schools he worked at Tipton for 19 years, Luther for 5 years, and Oakdale for 4 years. Mr. McCown not only has been a high school principal but he has been a coach for football, girls and boys basketball, and baseball. His hobbies include fishing, playing golf, and watching TV. Mr. McCown came to Burns Flat-Dill City because of the staff and the leadership here at the school and since being here he thinks it s great! Sue Wright has taught at BF-DC Schools for 21 years and before that she taught at Dill City. Mrs. Wright is the teacher for biology I, anatomy, physiology, and physical science, before teaching these subjects she taught life science, biology II and chemistry and she coached H.S. academics. She has a daughter named Shelly and a son named Jerry and is blessed with 11 grandchildren. Her hobbies are spending time with her grandchildren, reading, and doing crafts of all kinds. Since being at BF-DC she thinks the administration, teachers and support are great to work with and the students are great. Susan Manuel is the principal at Will Rogers Elementary School. She attended Northwestern State in Alva where she earned her bachelors degree and masters degree, Phillips University in Enid, and SWOSU to get her post masters work in administration. She lives in Burns Flat with her husband and they have three children and three grandchildren. Mrs. Manuel came to work at BF-DC schools because her husband decided to take a job here teaching at WTC and their old elementary school closed. She was a substitute and taught homebound students and then was fortunate enough to begin teaching at BF-DC schools. She has worked at BF-DC schools for 21 years. Before coming to Burns Flat she taught school in New Mexico for 3 years, Enid, Oklahoma for 8 years, and Gate, OK for 10 years. Mrs. Manuel's hobbies are gardening, bird watching, reading, and music. Since being at BF-DC she says "I like it very much, especially the students and adults I ve had the opportunity to work with and get to know. Beverly Uecke has worked as the activity fund secretary for 4 years at the high school and for 2 years at Will Rogers, she was also a special education teacher assistant from at Will Rogers Elementary school. She has one daughter Janie Selman who is a second grade teacher at Will Rogers and one son Jason Uecke who is Transportation Director at Burns Flat- Dill City Schools. She has 4 grandsons, Jarrett and Jaxon Selman and Tanner and Tate Uecke. Her hobbies include reading, decorating, gardening, and spending time with her family. Mrs. Uecke has lived in Burns Flat since 1977 and says It has been a great place to live, work and raise her family. I have a lot of great friends and a wonderful church family. Sherri Field has worked as the Superintendent s Secretary at BF-DC schools for 26 years. Before working at BF-DC she was employed as a financial administrative assistant and as an executive secretary. She is married and has two sons and one daughter-in-law and two beautiful grandchildren. Her hobbies are spending time with her grandchildren, traveling, fishing, and working in the yard and garden. She also likes to go back to South Eastern Oklahoma to spend time with her 3 sisters and run around. She says Burns Flat is like home to her now, and she has lived here longer than anywhere else. Both of her sons graduated from Burns Flat- Dill City Schools. Ron Hughes is the Superintendent of Burns Flat-Dill City Schools and has taught for a total of 25 years, not only at BF-DC Schools but at Chickasha, Merritt, Sperry, and Elk City. He taught social studies and coached football, baseball, track, basketball, and golf. He attended USAO and SWOSU achieving his Bachelors of Science in health, physical education, and recreation and his masters in Educational Administration. Mr. Hughes is married and has two children that attend school at BF-DC Schools. He likes to hunt and fish when he has spare time. He came to BF-DC for the professional opportunities and stayed because he loves it. Lace Michelle Logan- Davis received her bachelor s degree at East Central University in Ada, OK, Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK, and South Eastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, OK. She earned her masters at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, OK. Before teaching at BF-DC schools she taught in Ohio, She moved to Clinton and taught their Migrant Education and ran a Migrant Summer School for Pre-k through 12 th grade. Then she taught Special Education in Elgin, Oklahoma for 1 st grade through 5 th grade, and then in Hinton, Oklahoma for kindergarten through 8 th grade, and ended up at BF- DC teaching Special Education for 4 th through 6 th grade. She is the Assistant Principal at Will Rogers Elementary. She has also been the high school and junior high cheer coach at Burns Flat-Dill City for 2 years, Hinton for 2 years, and Elgin for 10 years. Mrs. Davis lives in Burns Flat with her husband Douglas D. Davis and they have two sons Logan D. Davis and Londan J. Davis. Her father James A. Logan and mother Joan Logan live in Checotah, Ok, and her sister Janise McIntyre and Brother in Law Kyle McIntyre and their son Jett McIntyre live in Temple, OK. Mrs. Davis enjoys reading, laying out at the lake, ocean or beach, making crafts with wood, and painting when she has free time. Lace Davis came to Burns Flat-Dill City because her husband was offered the Junior High Principals position. Since being here she says I love the people here, the faculty at the grade school and high school are the best. Everyone is so welcoming and thoughtful. We are so blessed to have found BF-DC as our school and our home. Terri Ledbetter works at BF-DC Schools as a library/ teacher assistant. She at- Page 2 tended Spencer Business College in Lafayette, Louisiana for 2 years and received her business certificate. She lives in the country outside of Burns Flat with her husband Gary and has been blessed to have raised her children, other children and foster children there. Mrs. Ledbetter came to work at BF-DC Schools in 1990 and she has worked here for a total of 24 years. Before working at BF-DC she worked for 5 years at the Washita State bank from 1984 to She started out as a teller at the bank and then ran the insurance company for the bank. During this time she was also the secretary for Meadows Law Office (which was the husband of Virginia Meadows, President of the Washita State Bank). She then became secretary for Mrs. Meadows and also did the paper work for the loan officers. Her hobbies are spending time with her family and helping the students at BF-DC Schools with History Day and other projects. Mrs. Ledbetter lived in Dill City from 1971 to 1983 and really enjoyed the community. She moved to Burns Flat in She said I love both of these communities. As far as working at the Burns Flat-Dill City School system, I love the staff and the students. Douglas Davis is the Junior High Principal at Burns Flat-Dill City Schools. He graduated from South Western Oklahoma State University with his bachelors and his masters degrees. Mr. Davis is married to Lace Davis and they have two sons, Logan and Londan. He taught in Hinton, Oklahoma for 12 years. He was the teacher/director of the Alternative Education Program and also taught Oklahoma history, civics, computer I, II, and III, and biology. Mr. Davis s hobbies are music record and cd collecting, sports memorabilia collecting, Ohio State football memorabilia collecting, and working on and repairing computers. Mr. Davis came to Burns Flat-Dill City Schools to become the Junior High Principal. He enjoys living and working in Burns Flat but would like it better if there were more restaurants. Deanna Modesto

3 April 17, 2014 Burns Flat-Dill City Schools Volume 53, Number 10 Page 3 Will Rogers Elementary Cheers for Testing Students The Will Rogers Elementary students attended a pep rally to help prepare them for the upcoming state mandated test. The students not testing lined the hallways and cheered for the older students as they made their way to the gym for the rally. Mrs. Dixon the counselor and Mrs. Davis the assistant principal led the pep rally and the cheering on of the students that will be testing. Perfect Attendance Winners Every month, the names of students with perfect attendance go into a prize drawing. The winners of the March drawing (for $5 each) were Mathew Harper, Michelle Sanders and Kyla Bloomer. 5th Grade Academic Team Has a Successful Season The 5th grade Academic team was recently invited to scrimmage against the Canute 5th grade team. They did a super job. BFDC won 2 of the 3 matches. It was a confidence builder for the team. They decided it was a lot more fun to win and in the next meet they did exactly that. Following the scrimmage with Canute, the 5th grade team went to the 5th grade Beta Meet at Weatherford. The BFDC team competed against teams from Weatherford and Elk City. They won 2 of the 3 match- es to wind up Runner up. They lost the 3rd game to an Elk City team by only 2 questions. The team has come a long way this year. They have been willing to practice during lunch 2 days a week. It has not been easy for them to answer questions and try to eat lunch at the same time. If this groups keeps working as hard as they are now they are expected to do very well in junior high next year. After completing 10 weeks of work with DARE officer Sunny Siegler the 5th grade class earned there DARE graduation. Students were presented their certificates and t-shirts at Eagle time. Officer Siegler also provided the class with a pizza lunch which was enjoyed by all. Part of the requirements of the DARE program was that students had to write a 5 paragraph essay on what they learned during the DARE lessons and how they planned on sharing what they learned. Each essay was read and scored. The judges looked to see if the student stayed on topic, if they had 5 paragraphs, their content, vocabulary use, and many other criteria. The winner of the essay contest was Grace Schneberger. She received a medal and a giant stuffed bear. Congratulations to all 5th graders on completion of Ann McBee Coach 4th and 5th Graders Advance to Regional Math Race Competition Will Rogers Elementary students have been honing their math facts skills using the Soft Seven Math program. Thirty students with the highest scores in multiplication met at the end of March to compete for the chance to advance to a regional competition in Oklahoma City. The top 10 students will compete at Metro Tech in OKC on May 1st. Students earning the right to go to OKC are Josh 5th Completes Dare Program Mooney, Darius Glass, Ryan Neeley, Alexis Plaza, Ethan Howell, Katie Smith, Alexis Cloyd, Jacob Flores, Benjamin Baker, and Maci Julian. Neveah Barnes is the runner-up. The top scorers were Josh Mooney with 8079 and Darius Glass with The top 100 students from the regional competitions will advance to the MathRace Championship in Stigler, Oklahoma. Kneeling in front Alexis Cloyd, Josh Mooney, Alexis Cloyd. 5th Graders Build Bridges Mr. Jacobsen s fifth grade science class was given a task to construct a bridge out of tooth picks and white glue. The specification for the bridge was that it had to be 12 inches in length and 2.5 inches in width. The students could use a maximum of 750 toothpicks and white Elmer s glue. The bridge needed to hold 5 lbs for one minute for a passing grade. During the judging of the bridges, a bridge was placed between two desks that were spaced10 inches apart. The more weight the bridges held the higher the grade. The bridges were also graded on design and decorations. The students had 6 weeks to construct their bridges and then they were tested. The activity was a group activity and the students used mathematics and construction design to create their bridges. The activity allowed for hands on learning of applied geometry and problem solving skills. John Kilhoffer won with his design for strength and design. He used a truss bridge design that allowed a stronger construction with fewer toothpicks. John used 363 toothpicks in his design. The bridge held 40 lbs before the weights on the bridge slid sideways. John s bridge did not break but it did bend. The top bride building team for holding weights was the team of Dakota Stegeman, Jace Maxey, and John Garcia. They used a straight roadway bridge design using 653 toothpicks. They were able to pack a lot of toothpicks under the roadway for maximum support. The bridge was able to hold up to 68 lbs before the weights began to slide. This was an important project that allowed the students to use what they have learned in class to complete a task with minimal direction.

4 April 17, 2014 Burns Flat-Dill City Schools Volume 53, Number 10 FFA Speech Team Succeeding The FFA speech team is experiencing success. Team members; Lilly Schneberger, Kelsey Briggs, Brianna Rush, DeLeon Randolph and Jarrett Selman competed at the Kingfisher FFA speech contest on March 31 st Lilly and Kelsey garnered honors placing 4 th and 5 th respectfully in the FFA Creed division. On April 7 th the speech team traveled to Redlands College in El Reno where Deleon placed 4 th in the creed division. Also, on April 8 th team members competed at the Thomas FFA Speech Contest. All 5 members are preparing diligently for the Elk City PI Speech Contest at Weatherford on April 17 th The FFA members will be competing for the right to speak at the Southwest District Speech Contest at Cameron History Day Teams Place at District The History Day students competed in the District History Day competition in Weatherford on March 26 th. The theme for this year s History Day competitions is Rights & Responsibilities in History. High School students, Jordan Hughes and Cheyenne Leftwich placed 1 st on their A Taste of Freedom exhibit. The exhibit was over women on the homefront during WWII. Seth Nason and Isaac Clark placed 3 rd on their The Plow That Broke the Plains exhibit. The exhibit was over the dust bowl. The Junior High group is University in Lawton, Oklahoma on April 22 nd According to the Wall Street Journal, public speaking is the #1 fear in America, the fear of death is ranked #2. People are more afraid of speaking than dying. Mark Twain once said, There are two types of speakers, those who get nervous and those who are liars. When you really think about it, the fear of public speaking is also a fear of death- an emotional death. This is a very talented group of FFA members that have nurtured their public speaking talents. Good luck to everyone competing at the speech contest on April 17 th Cheyenne McDaniel Jake Mooney and Jaron Mason, 8 th grade, Lorsa Hughes, 7 th grade and Jordan Mason, 6 th grade. These students placed 1 st in the Junior High Group Exhibit. Their topic was Saga of the Five Civilized Tribes. They also received the Best Entry Native American History Award from the Cheyenne Arapaho Tribal College. All the groups will be heading to the State History Day competition in Oklahoma City at the Oklahoma History Center in May. In fact, those accomplishments have landed them with an invitation to the Junior National Academic Competition to be held in New Orleans from May 24 May 26. The 8 th and 9 th grade team became The Oklahoma Great Plains Academic Conference Runners up. The Mid-Level team competed in the Oklahoma Association of Academic Competition and won District Champions, Regional and Area Champions before placing as state level Tournament of Champions Runners-up. Although the team did lose to the first place team of Rock Creek, they outscored all other teams in Division I for the day in total earned points. The team now has the task of raising the funds needed to get to the tournament. The team consists of 10 members Mrs. Brown took a group of students to Joseph s Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat in Oklahoma City, April 12th. Band and Vocal were both allowed to go but only band students chose to attend. Band President, Jake Mooney, said It was an amazing musical. The music / Spring program will be held April 22nd on a and 2 coaches. The team will be travelling to New Orleans on May 23, and will start competition on Saturday May 24 and will be returning home on May 27. They need to raise enough money for gasoline, travel expenses, rooms, entry fees and meals for the trip. The team has already started their first fundraiser by selling Lil Caesar s Pizza Kits. Anyone wanting to buy a Pizza kit may contact any member or coach on the team. On Sunday, April 27, the team will be holding a spaghetti dinner from 11:30 to 2:30 in the school cafeteria for donations, and on Saturday, May 3 will be holding a car wash for donations with a location to be determined later. Any donations would be gladly accepted and can be sent to the Burns Flat- Dill City Academic Fund, P.O. Box 129, Burns Flat, Ok Band Students Take Trip to OKC Tuesday, they are playing a mixture of songs, Roar, Hot and Cold, Low Rider, I knew You Were Trouble, Baby, Home, Yeah, and Animal. Tamika Price said her favorite song is Home, but Kaleb Noyes says his favorite song is Trouble! Sierra Jacobs, Vocal Class to Perform April 22nd The BF-DC vocal class will have their spring program concert April 22, The vocal group will be singing selected songs; Gold, Brave, Don t Stop Believing, Titanium, Counting Stars, All in (Apologize), and Wagon Wheel. State District Contest will be April 24, Performances at state will be by the quartet group; Brittany Fricks, Kensey Garrison, Breanne Leftwich, and Brendan Schulte singing Cantante Domino. The duet of Kensey Garrison and Breanne Leftwich will sing Something Told the Wild Geese and three solos will be performed; Go Way From My Window sang by Kensey Garrison, All My Trials sang by Brittany Fricks, and Who Has Seen the Wind sang by Sierra Jacobs. The four guys were Tanner Renken, Sam McConnel, Tony Dorman, and Jacob Goeringer. Congratulations on making it to the State competition! Baseball Off to a Rough Start Baseball season is here! The BF-DC Eagles have played twelve games this season. The first game was on March 24 th. The record for the baseball team is There has been no wins but that doesn t mean they can t turn it around. The ACE pitcher is Jacey Newberry. Jordan Spradlin has the most stolen bases, which is 43. Jordan also has the best Avg., which is.463. the most runs in a single game this year is 17, in the game against Carnegie. Hannah Litaker JR High Slow Pitch Softball Doing Well The Junior-high girls have done very well this season having a win loss record of 6-4. When asked how the team has done batting wise, Coach Jared Meget replied, Everybody s been hitting the ball well. Jordan Weese, Katelyn Neeley, Tamika Price, and Bailey Lake have been pounding it every game. With the question on who s improved the most so far this season, Coach replied Raven Horn, she s done a great job being able to roll our line over in the batting line up. The junior high girls have all done amazing this year and are fun to watch! When asking Coach Meget what he hoped to see done by the end of the season, he answered We ve done a good job defensively, and we re where we need to be, but offensive wise we could all improve and we need to get more aggressive as well. When asking him who s improved the most on the high-school team so far, he said has improved the most. It seems like she s no longer afraid of the ball, and defensively she s done an outstanding job. When talking about the offensive side as a whole, Coach said Our batting hasn t been consistent, that s just one thing LAVERNE Daniel Battles Aaron Knight Tony Dorman Jordan Spradlin Seth Nason High School Track Team Competing The BF-DC high school track team had a track meet at Watonga high school on the 29 th of March. landed 5 th place in the mile and Kaitlyn Utt finished 5 th in the 200m. The high school track team had another meet on April the 5 th at Kingfisher high school. Tommy Ratliff placed 6 th in the 200m and Kaitlyn Utt placed 6 th in the 400m. we need to improve on; and we need to keep up our defense, and we will be where we need to be. The high-school girls have districts coming up the last week of April, and are looking to go a long ways. Go to a game and support your BF-DC Eagle Softball team. Mighty Eagles Win at Weatherford On Saturday April 5 th, the Mighty Eagles went to Weatherford, OK to compete in the Route 66 Area 11 Special Olympics. The Mighty Eagles team members are Katy Horne, a sophomore, and Justin Davis, an eighth grader. Each athlete participated in 2 events. Katy Horne received 1 st place in the 25m walk and 3 rd place in the softball throw. Makia Maxey came in 1 st on the 200m, Taylor Garcia was 5 th in the 200m, Caitlin Johnson was 2 nd in the 100m and 5 th in the 400m, Kayela Staples was 4 th in the 800m and the mile, Jaden Kendrick was 5 th in the 800m and the mile, and Cobe Villegas was 6 th in the 400m. The girls also came in 3 rd in the mile relay and the 400m relay, and the boys were 4 th in the 3200m and 5 th in the mile relay. The junior high had another track meet at Watonga junior high on the 1 st of April. Caitlin Johnson finished 3 rd in the 100m and the 200m, Kayela Staples was 4 th in the mile, Madison Flores was 5 th in the mile and 4 th in the 800m, and the girls finished 5 th on the 4x200m relay and the 4x800m relay. Jaden Kendrick was the 5 th one done in the mile, Ethan Rodriguez 2 nd in the long jump, Cobe Villegas was 6 th in the 100m, Luis Rivas was 3 rd in the 100m and 1 st in the 200m, and the boys were 2 nd in the 4x400m relay. The junior high track team also had a track meet at Okeene junior high on the 7 th of April. Caitlin Johnson came in 2 nd on the 100m, Makia Maxey was 6 th in the 200m, and the girls were 3 rd in the 800m relay. A fourth track meet was on April the 12 th at Weatherford junior high. Caitlin Johnson got 3 rd in the 100m and 2 nd in the 200m, Kayela Staples was 6 th in the 800m and 2 nd in the 1600m, and Luis Rivas was 1 st in the 400m. The girls also got 2 nd in the 4x800m and 4 th in the 4x200m. 2 nd place in the running long jump. These two athletes will now be traveling to Stillwater, to compete in their events against other athletes from across the state of Oklahoma, in May.
