These individuals that have breeding stock at home will weigh first. These individuals will also weigh right a 9 am or a little before. We want those hogs weighed in first to help prevent the possible spread of disease.? If you don t want to weigh your hogs that is fine just leave them in the trailer and we will give you the tag and watch you tag them. Goats and Sheep MUST HAVE their SCRAPIE TAGS at the first weigh in! EID Tags EID Tags are needed if you think you will go to State Fair or if you plan to go to KJLS or any state or national show. If all you are going to do is take your market animal to the county fair all you need is the regular tag. If you decide you need an EID Tag it will cost 3 dollars a tag, please bring the money with you to weigh in and pay for the tag then. EID Tags cost a lot so we do not order a lot so please do not take one unless you really think you need it. Weigh Dates April 24 th Feeder Calves 5:30pm at Columbus Vet Clinic. April 25 th Swine 9am Fairgrounds. April 27 th Goat and Sheep 5:30pm Fairgrounds. Bucket Calves must be tagged by June 1 and they need to be born after January 1st! And just some suggestions of the size and age of animals you should be considering purchasing for the fair. Feeder calves- Animals must weigh between lbs. Calves must be born on or after September 1. Market Hogs- Ideal weights at weigh in would be lbs. Pigs born in mid-february to early March should work well. Meat Goats- Goats should be born end of December to early February. State Events April 15 th If you are interested in showing at the Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H Stock Show you need to have your DNA Envelopes turned into the office by April 15 th. DNA nomination fees are $5.00 per sample all livestock species attending the show need to be DNA tested. If you have livestock that you plan to show at KJLS or the Kansas State Fair the DNA envelopes and the forms are due to the State for market heifers and market steers May 1 st for breeding heifers and all other livestock June 15 th! Sunny Hills 4-H Camp Registration Due May 8th Will be June 15 th 18 th at Rock Springs 4-H Center. 4-H camp is a great opportunity for 4-Her s to meet other kids from across the state and have fun and experience new things. The Sherwood Grant pays for two 4-Her s from every club to go to camp. We currently have five clubs in Cherokee County, if every club has two campers and one club has three that club will divide up the money between the three and the parents will make up the difference. If there is a club that has no kids going and there is a club that has four going the grant will pay for those four. So long story short the Sherwood Grant will pay for 10 4-Her s to go to camp. However, clubs that have more than two members going to camp can pay all or part of the camp fee. It is up to the club whether or not to help with the price of camp. 4-Her s who are interested in attending camp must pay a 10 dollar non refundable registration fee camp will cost $175 per camper this year. The registration form can be found in this newsletter. Also if any high school age 4-Her s that are interested in being a camp counselor please let Meghan know. We are always looking for fun responsible individuals for camp counselors and if you plan on being a camp counselor you must be VIP Certified! Kansas 4-H Discovery Days - Discovery days will be May 26-29, Registration Closes April 15, Kansas 4-H Photo Adventure Camp Will be May 31-June 3, Registration Closes April 15, H Photo Adventure Camp is an intense, exciting four day photographic experience for teens age Cameras, teens, and the camp theme of "Shooting 4 Twenty" will combine to explore and capture the campers visions in both new and traditional activities. Talented and dynamic volunteers will provide handson instruction enabling many new skills to be learned. This year the camp is celebrating its 20 th year with many new workshops and activities. Youth will be assigned to workshops and activities based on the type of camera equipment they bring to camp, their photography skills and any prior attendance at 4-H Photo Action Camp. Camp will conclude with a presentation for parents and guests featuring images made by all campers. CCLIA EXPO - The date has been set. It will be Saturday, May 16th. 6 Cherokee County Extension Office 124 W. Country Rd., PO Box 148 Columbus, KS `PRSRT STD U.S. POSTAGE PAID COLUMBUS, KS PERMIT NO. 20 Note from Pat: With the new 4-H Online system you can go in and add and remove projects or check to make sure you are signed up for what you thought you signed up for. We can do it in the office but you have that option so then you know for sure. As long as you remember your and password you will have access to your records. so if you have a change of address, , etc please go in there and change it. And please leaders, Club and project make sure you have enrolled online also. If you have questions holler..it's really not that hard but if you want to have access to be able to pull up your project area 4-H'ers, you have to be signed up first and okayed by the office. It really is a pretty amazing program once you get the hang of it so please get that taken care of as soon as possible. And for those 4-H'ers who have signed up but have not brought in your participation forms please do that asap because after June 1 we take no enrollments. doesn't matter if you are in the system because if we don't have your form you are not a 4-H'er. Thanks for taking care of that. If you aren't sure if you're signed up or not go into the 4-H online website and see if you are listed as active or still pending or incomplete. Unless you are marked active you are not enrolled. Thanks. Cherokee County 124 W.
