What it means to be a West Valley CheerLEADER Within cheerleading, a leader is more than just being a strong performer. A true leader facilitates the success of the entire squad. They work hard, stay positive, and encourage their teammates to do the same. Being a leader means promoting a positive environment that allows others to thrive and reach their goals. Being a leader is vital to your role as a cheerleader during practice, in the hallways, and out in the community. You must always represent West Valley Cheerleading to the best of your ability. Cheerleader roles and responsibilities: Being committed Promoting school spirit Being a positive role model Attending all scheduled practices/games/tournaments Being involved in various community service activities Participating in parades Being able to travel to away games on school nights Be responsible, respectful, enthusiastic, and have a good attitude Be a leader for the school What we cheer for and our practices: Practices are held Monday evenings and sometimes late start mornings Practice is subject to change depending if we need to add more for a busy week. All football games Home volleyball games Home cross-country meets Home soccer games All basketball games All wrestling matches Other commitments: Support other sports by making signs/goodie bags Preparing for upcoming events Assisting to plan assemblies Plan and decorate for the Homecoming Dance attendance to the dance is mandatory Assist in planning/decorating for Golden Throne and Golden Plunger. Grades Requirement of 2.5 cumulative GPA to tryout Maintain passing grades at all grade checks or cheerleader will be ineligible to cheer/preform We try our very best to work around other sports schedules. If you choose to be a part of both, communication and full commitment to the team is required.
Financial Commitment There are significant costs that go along with being a member of the cheer squad. The following numbers are estimates; exact numbers will be given out after the team is selected. Camp fees: $390 We will be attending UCA Camp at The Great Wolf Lodge in Centralia, WA at the end of July Personal uniform clothing/camp clothing (shirts, warm-ups, spandex, bows etc.) $150 Poms: $30 Shoes: $80 **Extra travel money throughout the year Total estimate: $650 *Camp bill and camp clothing must be paid before we go to camp (July), we will give specific due dates after the team is selected.
Breakdown of Tryouts 1. Teacher Recommendations 20% 0-5 points for attendance/punctuality 0-5 points for respect of authority and peers 0-5 points for effort and quality of work 0-5 point for honesty and integrity *To try out you must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA 2. Clinic Observations 30% 0-10 points for interview 0-10 points for coaches observations 0-10 points skills demonstrated 3. Official Tryout! 50% The tryout will be judged by adults only. Coaches will not judge tryouts! Rallying (10 points) 0-5 points for pep and enthusiasm/coordination 0-5 points for jumps 0-5 points extra credit for tumbling 0-5 points extra credits for outstanding rallying skills *Please don t attempt to tumble unless you have had proper training to do so Cheer (15 points) 0-5 points for sharpness of motions 0-5 points for coordination 0-5 points for projection of voice Sidelines/Fight song 0-5 points for rhythm 0-5 points for coordination and sharpness 0-5 points for memory of material 0-5 points for overall presentation Overall appearance (5 points) 0-5 points for grooming and smiles
Cheer Contract Appearance: Uniformity is a rule of the squad. We must look unified Hair must be up when stunting No gloves, scarves, headbands, hats, or undershirts are to be worn unless the entire squad has them and is wearing them. If you do not have the appropriate attire, it may result in you not cheering at the event We will put assigned uniform/outfits on the calendar for planning purposes Representation: We must always represent West Valley High School and yourself in a positive light, especially on social media. Social media etiquette is very important when being a leader. We will be looking to see what you post on social media prior to tryouts and also through the year, if selected for the team. No PDA in uniform (personal cheer attire or school owned) No one is allowed to wear WV cheer clothing unless they are on the squad, don t loan out clothing School issued cheer clothes are not a part of your personal wardrobe. Do not wear them unless we tell you to When wearing personal cheer clothes, you must represent! Whether you are at school, at the mall, or at a restaurant, people notice cheer clothing. Please represent WV cheer in a positive way. All school owned clothing items will be checked out at the beginning of the year, and must be checked back in at the end. Doing your part: It is not fair to rely on others to do everything nor is it fair to rely on others to tell you what to do. When making posters at practice, everyone helps. No sitting around talking When helping at cross-country, if there is nothing for you to do, you should be on the course cheering on the runners. When you are not scheduled to cheer, but are there watching the games, you need to be cheering along with the cheerleaders, not just socializing with your friends Practice: We have very little time to practice as a squad, that being said: Practice is mandatory If you miss a practice, you will sit out for part of an event of the coach s choosing Practice clothes must always be worn, even if you don t think we will be working out or stunting Practice clothing consists of: cheer shoes, shorts (which may not be rolled to make shorter), yoga or dance pant, t-shirt, and SPORTS BRA! A sports bra must always be worn when cheering. No regular bra underneath a sports bra. The straps are tacky. You must show up to practice ready for practice. It takes too much time to take out jewelry, put hair up, and change into cheer shoes. It needs to be done ahead of time. Attitude: It is important that we always have a positive and respectful attitude toward cheer and the
members of the squad. We spend a lot of time together and tension and frustration can easily build. When you are frustrated with something or someone, go to the source and deal with it FACE TO FACE in a positive and constructive manner. Texting is not a sufficient way to work out issues. Do not let things build up. Deal with it right away in a positive manner. Always respect people on the team. We don t have to be best friends, but we must always have each other s back. Talking behind the back of a teammate breaks the team down and makes you look like a poor teammate. If the issue is one that you can t deal with on your own, you need to come and speak with the coach for help addressing the issue in a positive way. Drama will not be tolerated. Not dealing with issues as stated above will result in suspension and possible termination from the squad Jewelry: No jewelry during cheer ever! If you weren t born with it, you can t wear it. Cheerleader Commitment: Cheerleading is a huge commitment; it will take a large amount of your time. Cheerleading must come before jobs and unplanned events. We know you have lives, and things come up with family that cannot be foreseen. With that being said you must communicate conflicts with the coach within a timely matter. We send out a calendar in advance so that you have an opportunity to plan around our schedule. When a conflict occurs in the schedule, you must speak to the coach to address it at least one week prior to the event. Not doing so will result in an unexcused absence. Missing an event or practice without a coach pre-approval will result in an unexcused absence. You must have passing grades at all grade checks or you may be ineligible to participate Parent Commitment: Parent support is huge with cheerleading. Especially with the cheerleaders that cannot transport themselves it is important that parents can commit to taking the cheerleader to practices/games, or arranging a different ride. Aside from transportation, we expect that parents are able to assist in the snack shack on occasion, attend parent meetings, help with team bonding events such as team dinners, and other events. We will do our best to communicate our needs in advance. Financial Commitment: If your cheerleader is selected for the cheerleading squad you are required to pay all camp related fees outlined in the Financial Commitment portion of the packet I have read the above material and agree to the rules and commitments that are stated. Cheerleader Signature Date Parent Signature Date
If selected for the Cheerleading Squad you must be able to attend the following summer dates. We will have a follow up parent/cheerleader meeting to discuss more in depth the contract and commitment to cheerleading. Practice: July 11th - July 13th 6:00pm -8:00 pm July 16th - July 20th 6:00pm - 8:00 pm July 23rd 6:00pm - 8:00 pm - meeting to discuss camp and practice Cheerleading Camp in Centralia WA - more information to come July 25th - July 28th Fees Due: May 25th - camp fee deposit of $100 due June 8th - the rest of camp costs due **A comprehensive summer calendar will be given out at the start of summer**
