He introduced Roy Murphy and Sharon Connaway as guests. Officers Reports Scott Kailer gave the Secretary s report which was approved as written. Greg Mahoney gave the Treasurers report which was accepted. 2 Show Report Scott reported that we had 41 registrations with one pending. Volunteers for the Admissions and Drawing tables were in place, a few openings on Sunday. Bob Munroe reported that the table layout was current and that we had volunteers for setup on Saturday. Carl will provide containers for the raffle tickets. Bob Munroe will provide the door prize carving. Heinecke Wood is still taking orders for the show. Debbe Edwards seminar is all set and she will have rough outs at the show. Program: The program for the evening a round table on who was your mentor that got you into carving? Several people talked about their mentors and how they got into carving, many were as a result of retirement and needing something to do. There were many interesting stories and it was interesting to hear how people got started in woodcarving. Reminders The Carve-In will be May 23 at Hillside Christian Church, Roy Hosie will lead the project again this month. May and June Carve-Ins will start at 6:30 pm rather than at 6:00 pm. Carl Pilcher will lead the June Carve-In. We need volunteers to lead the carve-in for the next few months, please contact Bob Munroe if you are interested leading a carve-in. We also need people to bring refreshments. Wear your vests and caps to the show. Adjourned at 7:40 PM Attest Scott Kailer Secretary CHIPS FROM THE OLD BLOCK Ed Redwine Pres. There was a collective sigh of relief as our 51 st annual show was put to bed. Since time passes quickly, it won t be long until we start planning number 52. On behalf of the officers and show committee, thank each and every one who had a part in the show. In my opinion, we had a successful show even though it didn t measure up to our 50 th. What determines a successful show? Bottom line? Attendance? Tables? From preliminary figures, we will at least break even on show income expenses. Our attendance was about half of last year s gate. Tables were down about 30%. Still, if we can break even, the show, to me, is successful. Our show raffle has become a VERY important part of our show income. Every year the members are asked to take tickets and sell them to friends and family. It distresses your President to find only a few Visit for more news and events! Page 2

3 members actively pursued ticket sales. In the past, members were encouraged to buy a block of tickets and then, to recoup their outlay, by selling them to others. It s really not hard. I found when mentioning the drawing, and showing the pictures, especially the nativity, people reached for their wallets. Our volunteers manning the club tables did a great job of selling raffle tickets. They accounted for half the sales. Debbe Edwards hosted a fun seminar with 12 students and Walt Kuykendall as coordinator. She then went on to judge our show competently and professionally. I think most all were happy with her efforts. Things to start thinking about are the State Fair in September and elections also that month. Hope everyone can make the dinner meeting on June 13 th and the carve-in on June 27 th Show Report Well the 2017 GPWC Show and Sale is now history and I think we can say that it was a successful if not profitable show. The last attendance count that I heard was 384 ticket purchasing attendees, down from last year but still a respectable number. We don t have all of the financial information yet but it looks like we will either break even or be slightly in the black. The Entry Drawing was won by Dave Love of Partridge, KS The Raffle went well especially the Nativity Scene which was won by Jerry Pennington who happens to be Cindy Kuykendall s father. The winners of the regular Raffle were Glenn Eubanks Eastern Blue Bird, Carmen Suter- Young Woman and Hazel Chaney First Bloom. Congratulations to all of our winners! All of the prizes have been delivered or mailed. The Carving Contest winners were James Creveling - 1 st and Leo Heidebrecht 2 nd A list of the winners in the individual categories is attached. The big winners this year were Neil Nulton and Carolea Hower, you will see their names on the Judging sheet a number of times! Congratulation to both of them and to all of the winners! Over all things went fairly well and I think everyone enjoyed the show, we had our biggest crowd on Saturday morning but we maintained a fairly steady group of visitors throughout most of the day. We had a few glitches that had to be dealt with but fortunately we were able to get those taken care of in fairly quick order without significant issues, just a few things to look at for next year. 4 Debbe Edwards Seminar Debbe Edwards held a two-day seminar prior to the Show and it was a hit with those who attended. There were 12 attendees in the class who worked on projects of their own selection from the roughouts Debbe has available. Everyone came away feeling like they had really learned something and enjoyed themselves doing it. Thanks to Walt Kuykendall for coordinating the seminar. Visit for more news and events! Page 4

5 COMING EVENTS Kailers 50 th Wedding Anniversary - Sue and I would like to invite you to our 50 th wedding anniversary celebration on Sunday, June 11, 2017 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Kechi United Methodist Church (3 blocks west of 61 st St. N. and Oliver). It is an informal event and feel free to come and go as you please. We are asking that you do not bring gifts, we have enough stuff already but if you would like to bring a card we would appreciate that. Sue and Shannon, our daughter, are working on all kinds of refreshments so to be safe I will just say we will have refreshments. Our daughter Shannon (Kailer) and her husband Victor Triana, will also be celebrating their 25 th wedding anniversary with us, they were married two days after our 25 th. Looking ahead Artistry in Wood October 28 & 29 Oklahoma City State Fair Park. Saturday 10/28 9 am to 5 pm, Sunday 10/29 10 am to 4 pm. John Engler will be the Show Judge. 6 We gained a new member to the Club at the Show, welcome to Ray Murphy who has joined our ranks. Ray travels between here and Texas so we hope to see him while he is in town. We also had a couple of members rejoin the club by paying their dues so welcome back Preston Orr and Keith Chesser.
