1 Dear Cheerleader, LCHS Competitive and Sideline Cheerleading Tryout Information This packet contains valuable information regarding the Competition/Sideline cheerleading season squads, and it NEEDS to be looked over by you and your parent(s)/guardian(s). Below you will find a checklist of important documents, some of which require a signature and need to be returned to be eligible to tryout. Remember there is absolutely no jewelry or gum allowed. If you have a conflict with May 5 th due to a current sport, please contact Coach Korrina immediately with the time conflict in order to best accommodate any needs. Open Gym Time: Friday, April 28 th 5:30-7:30 pm Cafeteria Interested in working your skills and better prepare for tryouts? Come to an open gym session to work on skills and meet other athletes who will be trying out. Please wear athletic shorts, t-shirt, proper shoes and hair in a pony. **This tryout is for the competition and sideline squad** Lakes HS requires the following in order to participate in tryouts: [ ] You must have a current physical in the nurse s office [ ] Passed 5 courses in previous semester and passing 5 courses [ ] Have no outstanding fees [ ] Parent Permission Form AND Cheerleader Information Form ***TRYOUTS- you will be evaluated on:

2 Sideline Cheer(s) 5 Jumps (right/left front, pike, double toe, combo) Dance Stunt (most advance stunt you have solid) **All selections are made at the discretion of the LCHS Cheer Coaching Staff** You may not be on any other extracurricular or outside cheerleading teams, including All-Star (per IHSA guidelines), during the season in which you are cheering. There are two levels for this tryout: Varsity and Junior Varsity if numbers are strong enough we will add a Freshman Team. If you were on a LCHS Cheerleading Squad previously, it does not guarantee you a spot on this squad for the upcoming season. A veteran cheerleader can be cut, or a person who is on Varsity can be placed on JV. A cheerleader may be MOVED FROM VARSITY TO JV OR JV TO VARSITY at the coaching staff s discretion at any time. If a cheerleader doesn t know the material or maintain the required skills (i.e. tumbling, stunting) they may be removed from an upcoming event or possibly the program (consistent with the Cheer Constitution , which is included in this packet). Skills to be working on for the Competition Season: In order to be considered for the Varsity Competition Squad you must be able to demonstrate standing and running tumbling. Round-off, forward roll, etc. is not considered tumbling. In previous years, an emphasis has been on having a standing back tuck and running pass with at least a back tuck for Varsity. However, we evaluate you ALL AROUND, on all of your skills. Even if you have running and standing tumbling this does not mean you will make Varsity and/or the program. You must have strong skills all around- in stunting, jumps, motions, tumbling, as well as a POSITIVE ATTITUDE. Exceptions can be made for specific situations under the discretion of the LCHS Coaching Staff.

3 April 2017 Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s), Your son/daughter is interested in trying out for the Cheerleading Squad. If your son/daughter is chosen to represent Lake Community High School as a member of the squad, it will not only be an honor, but a MAJOR commitment. The responsibilities are numerous and MUST be fully understood in advance. This packet is designed to provide you with a comprehensive list of policies, procedures, and expectations. It is important to realize that practice and game schedules are typically set well in advance and should therefore be considered MANDATORY. Schedule changes that are not in control of the cheerleading coaching staff will be made known to the squad members as soon as possible. Becoming a cheerleader requires a substantial financial commitment. Members will be responsible for (not limited to) the many cheerleading expenses which are outlined in this cheer packet. As a member of the squad, your son/daughter will be responsible for maintaining a good academic record. This is monitored on a weekly basis in accordance with the LCHS and IHSA guidelines. All members are required to follow the rules set forth in the Cheerleading Constitution Packet and the Student Handbook/Athletic Code. LCHS Cheerleading Squads follow IHSA and those set forth in the NFHS Spirit rules book. Please review the requirements listed in the packet with your son/daughter. Should you agree to make the commitment, please sign the attached permission forms and have your son/daughter bring these signed forms to school and have turned into Coach Korrina in person or in the front office in Coach Korrina s mailbox. If your child does not attend LCHS you may bring documents to registration before clinics on Wednesday, May 3rd starting at 5:30 pm.

4 Cheerleading Constitution and Tryout Packet Thank you for showing interest in the LCHS Cheerleading Program. If you have question please contact Coach Korrina at Academics: The LCHS Cheerleading Program expects academics to be each participant s first priority. LCHS cheerleaders are expected to follow the LCHS rules for eligibility set by the IHSA. Along with the school standings all athletes must be passing 5 classes. Varsity is given an hour after school each practice to complete any assignments, missing work, retake test, and to meet with a teacher or tutor. Please use this time to your advantage. Practices: Your commitment to this program begins at tryouts. You will be expected to attend all practices at the school and tumbling practices offsite. Practice may be scheduled for before school, after school, or in the evenings. You will be expected to cheer at all required basketball games Cheerleaders must ride the athletic bus to and from events Practices are closed. Parents cannot be at practice. We will have special dates for everyone to attend to see the progress in which the squads make. NO CELL PHONES AND NO TEXTING DURING PRACTICES, AND/OR GAMES. (Unless given permission by coaching staff) There will be a safe box that the athletes will be asked to place their phones in. Proper practice attire: Cheerleading shoes, socks, athletic shorts (with briefs), T- shirt, hair pulled back and off back and face. Pants are not allowed to be worn at practice. All participants are expected to be in practice and ready to begin at the designated practice time. Attendance: Attendance at all practices, tumbling sessions, choreography sessions, games, competitions, fundraisers and community events are mandatory. There will be a strict attendance rule: 1,2,3=OUT. A participant with three (3) unexcused absences may be dismissed from the team for the remainder of the season. Work is not an excused absence and please try to schedule doctor s appointments around practices and games. Three (3) minor rule infractions= One (1) unexcused absence. Minor rule infractions include (but are not limited to): not wearing proper practice attire, not wearing required game day attire to school, being tardy to practice, having a poor attitude, forgetting any cheer-related equipment/attire (e.g., warm-ups, uniform, cheer shoes, mittens, poms, etc.), using cell phones at practice/game/competition without permission, wearing

5 jewelry/belly rings, chewing gum or eating food on the mats. If a cheerleader has an unexcused absence from practice, he/she will be required to sit out that following game/competition and possibly the next game /competition. Even for excused absences, the cheerleader will have to sit out for a portion of the game (1 missed practice=sitting out 1 quarter, 2 missed practices=sitting out 2 quarters, etc.). On your 6th unexcused absence, you will be sitting out of the next competition. This is a team sport, we are a squad. Much of our routine requires and relies on everyone being there. If you are absent from practice the show will go on, this is why we have alternates. If an athlete is absent from school after the second half of the day they may not participate in any event including practices, games, and/or competitions. In case of an extended illness, a parent/guardian must contact the coach. It is the responsibility of the athlete to report directly to his/her coach with any illness or injury that would result in a missed practice or game. Schedules will be given out at the beginning of each season. However, cheerleaders will need to be flexible due to the need to add or change practice due to facilities, game, weather and/or needed practices. Cheering at games should be considered the same as competing at a competition. Any personal commitments such as vacations, doctor appointments, family dinner/parties, work or participations in club sport during the season are not considered as an excuse for missing practice. If you have something planned you must inform your coach prior so practice arrangements can be made. Please be aware that there will be practices/games/competitions over Winter Break that all athletes need to attend. We will not be having practice over Thanksgiving weekend. 6 Expectations: Jumps, stunting, tumbling, running, and cheering at games are a mandatory part of cheerleading at LCHS. Cheerleaders here at Lakes are considered athletes and will be treated as such. Everyone needs to be versatile. This means all cheerleaders are required to learn how to base backspot and even fly. If you are not interested in learning and perfecting all these skills along with working as a team, then you should not try out for cheerleading. In order to achieve maximum success as a squad, each individual must demonstrate a good work ethic and be willing to work for the good of the squad. Respect for other squad members and the coaching staff is imperative. The same is asked of parents toward other athletes on the team and the coaching staff. Negative behavior will not be tolerated. Negative behavior includes but is not limited to; making inappropriate comments towards squad members, teachers, students, and/or coaching staff in person or via social media, showing poor attitude at practice or games, inappropriate posts (pictures, comments) on any social media site, excessive absences/tardiness along with rules followed as part of the LCHS Athletic Code. Negative behavior will result in suspension from participation in one or more games or dismissal in the squad. Cheerleaders are considered representatives of Lakes Community High School. As such, athletes must be held to the highest standards. Behavior, as determined by the LCHS coaching staff that is inappropriate, rude, rough, offensive, etc., will result in discipline. Parent participation is appreciated. However, decisions about coaching and program management are solely the responsibility of the coaching staff. We ask that the parents support and adhere to the decisions made by the coaching staff. Travel Expectations: All athletes must travel to and from cheerleading events with the team including (but not limited to) competitions and away football and basketball games unless extenuating circumstances which are discussed and approved by the coaching staff prior to event. All decisions and rules enforcement while traveling will be made by the LCHS coaching staff. Expenses: Any outstanding fees with the school from prior seasons must be paid prior to tryouts. This includes missing uniforms. You will not be able to tryout if you (or one of your siblings) have any outstanding fees. You will not be able to tryout if your uniform or any other equipment is not turned in from the previous season.

Regarding all rules of the constitution, specific and extenuating circumstances will be reviewed and considered by the LCHS Coaching Staff.

8 PARENTAL PERMISSION My child, has my permission to be a cheerleader at Lakes Community High School. I understand that he/she must abide by the expectations and regulations set forth by the coaches and administration of LCHS and must be present for all cheerleading events including but not limited to: Practices, camps, competitions, and games. I have read the expectations and regulations may lease to suspension or removal from the squad. I understand that the attached forms must be completed and tuned in before my son or daughter is allowed to try out. I understand that this activity, like any other sport, involves risk to participate. Furthermore, I acknowledge and understand that due to the nature of this activity, there is a possibility that my child may sustain injury (minimal, serious, or catastrophic) in connection with his or her participation. I acknowledge and understand that my child is assuming the risk of such physical injury by participation, and release Lakes Community High School and its representatives from any claims to personal illness or injury that my child may sustain during participation in this activity. I also am aware of the expenses I am responsible to pay during the cheerleading season. An approximate breakdown of the necessary items were previously listed, and these prices are subjected to change at any time. 9 Cheerleader Information Form I understand that my level preference affects my chances of making the squad. I also understand that I am to attend all necessary events including, but not limited to: practices, games, competitions, and camps in order to fulfill my commitment to this squad. I understand that I am not able to view my own, or any other athletes, tryout results or score sheets.
