2 A Word From The Publisher Debbie and I had a nice trip to the Gulf Coast. We want to thank our friends at the Coast Rifle & Pistol Club near Biloxi, Mississippi for rolling out the welcome mat at the Sweetheart Shoots. We had a great time and visited some interesting restaurants too. We want to thank Randy Brownlee for being our guide and for sending us a write-up on the shoots. You can read about it in this issue. LP Paul Giambrone, III asked me to mention that he is putting on a free clinic for youth skeet shooters attending the Lafayette Skeet Academy, Inc. s Sixth Annual Junior Skeet Shooting Event on Saturday, March 10. This program is intended to encourage youth aged 6 to 18 to get involved in shooting sports. It has been a huge success. The program is funded with money from the Briley Louisiana Open and is free to the participants. There are registration forms for that event on our website. If you have youth shooter who wants to work with LP contact him directly at info@gsclinics.com. Now is the time to register for the North Louisiana Open. Check out the flyer for this shoot and many others on our website A number of clubs have sent us flyers for their shoots. If your club hasn t, we encourage you to take advantage of this free advertising. The prognosticators say that we are in for lower turn out at shoots this year. Some say It s the economy stupid. Many local clubs are doing everything they can to help keep the cost of skeet shooting low. If you are on a tight budget, you may want to consider the smaller local or near by shoots to keep you on your game until the economic storm passes. We are in the process of changing hosts for our website. Until we get the new site finished, you may be directed from to automatically. We haven t change our URL and this is temporary. Don t be confused, one of us needs to have a clear mind. We should be squared away by the next issue. We send our thanks to Dana Vutera for his masterful job a photographer on our Mardi Gras Quail Hunt. Read about it in this issue. One last note for Louisiana shooters. The deadline for submitting LSSA Hall of Fame nominations is March 30. See the form and instructions on the Flyers page on our website. Until we meet again in these pages or on the skeet field, I am wishin you 8. Most Sincerely, Doug Frey Page 2

14 Mardi Gras Quail How did you spend your Mardi Gras? Did you go to a parade or two, eat King Cake or party hardy? One group of sportsmen decided to avoid the crowds, take a ride to the country and chase some quail birds. In my younger days, I went to the Crescent City and observed the Mardi Gras festivities first hand. Much older and wiser now, I personally try to avoid the crowds and parades. I think I have found a better way to spend Mardi Gras. This year, I was invited to join my friend Dana Vutera and some of his friends and family for a trip to McComb, Mississippi to eat lunch at The Dinner Bell, followed by a quail hunt at Thornhill s Shooting Preserve in Jayess, Mississippi. Our happy throng met at The Dinner Bell at 11:00 AM with the hopes of beating the crowd. We almost did. We did make the waiting list for the second seating in the back dinning room. There we feasted on home style cooking including fried chicken, fried eggplant, rice and gravy, speckled butterbeans, black eyed peas, cabbage, corn on the cob, and cornbread, to name just a few of the menu items. This restaurant serves fabulous food on huge round Lazy Susan tables in an all you can eat concept second to none. You can read more about The Dinner Bell in the Dining On The Road feature in our March 2010 issue. Proprietor Gary Wayne Thornhill and his family run a really nice pen raised bird hunt program. They provide the dogs and the quail. They also have chukars if you prefer something larger than quail. Wayne will put out whatever quantity you want to hunt. One nice thing about hunting quail at Thornhill s is that it is a turn key service. They clean the birds you shoot and they do a better job of it than I have seen anywhere else. Thornhill s bird dogs are well trained and are a joy to hunt over. After banana pudding, we gave up our seats to the next shift of hungry patrons and made our way to Thornhill s about 1 PM. Wayne Thornhill split us up into three groups and off we went. Each group had a guide and bird dogs that took us to different sections of the Thornhill Shooting Preserve to hunt the birds that had been put out for us to find. Page 14

(Jim) LaCour, Bradley Vutera and Mark Jarreau [kneeling]. David Vutera and his son Luke came all the way down from New York State to visit family. The rest of this gang are all Louisiana residents and did not have far to go. The weather was pleasant, not too warm and not too cool. It was a pleasant day for hunting birds. The rain from the weekend was gone and partly cloudy skies prevailed. Page 15

17 Mardi Gras Quail (Continued) Some say there is not a prettier sight than bird dogs on point. The rush you get when the birds flush is also exciting. These may not be wild birds, but they sure are fun! Page 17

18 Mardi Gras Quail (Continued) Did I tell you the one about... In addition to guiding, Wayne usually entertains his clients with a few jokes. This appears to be one of those occasions. Wayne s dogs are trained to retrieve to hand. Page 18

23 Mardi Gras Quail (Continued) Dr. Jim LaCour checked off one item on his bucket list. He hunted quail with a bow. Guide Josh released two birds for Jim (one at a time). He hit the first one on the flush. The second one managed to escape [see picture below]. It was a fun way to end the day. 33 Dining on The Road The Blow Fly Inn On a recent trip to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to participate in the Sweetheart Shoot at Coast Rifle & Pistol Club, Debbie and I had the opportunity to dine with Randy and Linda Brownlee at the Blow Fly Inn. The Gulf Coast has no shortage of good places to eat. Every time we come down, Randy shows us to another local eatery that has great food. The Blow Fly Inn was no disappointment. The restaurant is located on the banks of peaceful Bayou Bernard in Gulfport. The building is up on piers to protect it from high water. The original building was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. The restaurant is accessible by boat or land. You are probably wondering how a restaurant came to be called the Blow Fly Inn. I have a degree in Marketing and I can tell you that I probably wouldn t have picked that name. The restaurant had its start over 40 years ago when Albert and Mary Malone opened Hickory s Bar B Q. The story is that one of Al s good friends, Mac, was constantly being asked how to find Al and Mary s restaurant. After being asked one too many times, Mac said Yeah, I ll tell you. You go past Pass Road, take a right and follow the string of blow flies. Before long, Hickory s became known as the Blow Fly Inn. A long-time Gulf Coast attraction, the Blow Fly Inn is a family restaurant now owned by Scott Weinberg. Scott takes great pride in serving USDA Choice Steaks, Bar-B-Que Ribs, Seafood and much, much more. The Blow Fly Inn a favorite restaurant of local folks as well as outof-town visitors. Page 33

34 Dining on The Road The Blow Fly Inn The Blow Fly Inn was listed in USA Today as one of the 51 Great Burger Joints in America in It was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives in 2009, appeared on the Food Network s Emeril Live in 2008 and was named as one of Southern Living s favorite Seafood Dives in Scott Weinberg has been named Restaurateur of the Year in Our dinner started with fried onion rings and fried green tomatoes, served with a Creole mayo. They were delicious. The appetizer menu includes fried dill pickles, mozzarella sticks, loaded potato skins, fried crawfish tails and pickles (with the house Bayou sauce), crab cakes and shrimp & grits. There is also a Creole Gumbo (I enjoyed a bowl of Fried Green Tomatoes & Onion Rings that), She-Crab Bisque, Cream of Shrimp & Asparagus soup and Shrimp Creole. There is a wide array of salad offerings including a Marinated Greek Salad which has marinated prime rib slices over fresh romaine with tomato, red onion, black olives, artichoke hearts and feta cheese. From the grill are Filet Mignon, Porterhouse, Ribeye, Sirloin and New York Strip steaks. There are also pork chops, Bar-B-Que Ribs, Prime Rib and hamburgers. While the Blow Fly Inn is known for great steaks and ribs, we had to enjoy seafood this trip. Debbie ordered a grilled Red Fish dish that had a crabmeat stuffing. I helped her eat that and it was very good. The menu includes Mississippi Delta Catfish, stuffed Flounder, Shrimp, Crab Claws, a seafood Platter and many other delicacies. Creole Gumbo The House Specialties include Seafood Pasta (Randy enjoyed that), Red Beans & Rice, Bayou Chicken Pasta and Veal Hollandaise, just to name a few. The Blow Fly Inn also has a wide range of sandwich and poboy alternatives. If you are in the Gulfport, Mississippi area at lunch or dinner time, you can t go wrong with a visit to the Blow Fly Inn. 39 The X Factor By: Paul L.P. Giambrone, III There is a common X factor amongst all shooters, and I mean ALL SHOOTERS. No one is exempt from this factor and this factor alone is one of the main things that separate the good shooters from the great shooters. This factor alone just about dictates how well or how poorly we will shoot in a given event, on a given day, or even the entire weekend or year. It is something that all shooters, businessmen, athletes, and your everyday Joe have. They may not have it all in the same area, but in some area of our lives we all have this X factor and it is one of the most important things you must possess to be successful in anything you do in life, especially on a skeet field. This is the factor that makes certain shooters step out on the field knowing they are about to perform to their best and no one can stop them, except themselves. Ok, I know I am dragging it out, but I want to make sure you understand the importance of this trait. Actually, speaking of trait, most people are just naturally born with this trait in some area of their lives, but fail to carry it over to other areas. This factor is called CONFIDENCE which can put you in your zone to perform at your best. Let s take a look at one of your best performances on the skeet field and analyze what happened that day. First off, you probably woke up in the zone that day or at least walked out onto the skeet field in your zone and knew you were going to shoot well. If you happened to miss one, you probably knew you were going to miss it due to some kind of mental distraction, or you flat out missed the shot because you are human. The point that I am trying to make is that you had all of the confidence in the world before, during, and after the performance. Think about that day. I want you to visualize it, breath it, feel it, smell it, put yourself in your shoes on that day and think about how you feel. You just put yourself in your zone, so why not try to do that all of the time? Why not walk out onto the skeet field EVERY time with this confidence? The only thing stopping you, is you. What about the time when nothing felt right and the wheels fell off along with the transmission? What happened on that day? Well, for starters, you were clearly out of your zone and did nothing to try and find your zone. Instead, you figured out just about every way possible to stay out of your zone by worrying about every little thing. Does that sound about right? I know I have had plenty of experiences like this in my 20 years of shooting and, at times, still have some here and there today. However, I know how to battle against these negative thoughts because I have faced this battle many times. What do I do? It is quite simple. I find my zone and get my confidence back where it should be and battle through the rest of the event. Page 39

40 The X Factor (Continued) This may seem quite complicated, but it is really very simple. All of you have been in the zone before at some point and time in your life (didn t even have to be in skeet shooting). My point is that when you enter your zone, you have all of the confidence in the world and nothing can stop you. So why not try to get there every time you shoot? What is stopping you? Trust me, I understand how our conscious mind can work against us and try to think of every possible way to keep us out of our zone and cause us to perform poorly. What helps me stay in my zone is having confidence in my routine. I have a routine that I go over each and every time and this routine is basically my game plan of what I want to get done on the station that I am about to shoot. The importance of having a game plan is to prepare yourself for what you are about to do. How successful would a lawyer be if he walked into a courtroom unprepared? What about a pilot with no flight plan or a shooter with no idea what he wants to do once he is on the station besides hear the gun go BANG? None of them would be very successful in what they are about to do because they don t know what they want to accomplish! The key is having a game plan of what you want to get done when stepping on the skeet field. Well Paul, what if I don t have confidence in my game plan? What if I am doing the wrong things? That is where having a great instructor comes into play. There are plenty of competent instructors, great DVDs and books to help as well. Even if you don t have someone at this very moment to help you along, stepping on the station with some kind of a game plan is better than stepping up there with no game plan at all. For example, I have seen shooters step up and go to a random hold point, call pull, miss, then realize they weren t even close to the hold point in which they wanted. How does this happen? Stepping on the station without going over your game plan or having no game plan at all to follow is a good way to lead to missing a target(s). Page 40

41 The X Factor (Continued) Your Foundation for Perfect Skeet with Paul Giambrone, III is available for purchase! The DVD shows you how to build a solid foundation for your skeet game and also helps shooters troubleshoot some common problems they may face. You can order the DVD now for only $59.95 plus shipping! Please info@gsclinics.com to order your DVD today! What is considered a good game plan? Well, each shooter is different, but I recommend knowing where your foot position should be, your hold point, your look point, and your break point. Also, it is a good idea to visualize the shot you are about to take to help you remember your sight picture for that particular target. All of these are good places to start, and I recommend something that is simple and easy for you to remember and something that you can do each and every time and have confidence in this plan. Remember, the most important thing of all once you have your game plan and are on the station is to stare a hole right through that target If you have any questions or comments, please me directly at info@gsclinics.com and visit for more information! Please check the website for upcoming tournaments and clinics in your area and keep in mind that GSC has completed its move to Arlington, TX! GSC will be available to teach in the Dallas/Fort Worth area all yearround! Please call for lesson availability today! The next scheduled clinic is in the San Antonio, TX area March 1-4 at Comel Shooting Center. Later in March, Tulsa Gun Club will host a clinic following its St. Patrick s Day shoot March in Tulsa, OK. Blue Rock Gun Club in Little Rock, AR will host a clinic March and Greater Houston Gun Club will host another clinic March in Houston, TX. Please or call me or the local organizer directly for more information about these clinics. Tip of the month: Find your zone before stepping onto the skeet field and gain your confidence each and every time before you shoot. Work on it in practice that way when you get to a tournament or your league night, you are fully prepared. You may not break them all, but you will break more targets this way than any other way. LP Page 41

42 Help Wanted Most gun clubs have a few individuals who are passionate about shotgun sports and who do most of the work putting on shoots and dealing with the multitude of details involved. If you are one of those people, thank you for your hard work and for caring enough about the shotgun sports to do something to preserve them for future generations. Most gun clubs have many more shooters who really enjoy the sport, but somehow never have the time to pitch in and help. They usually justify this in their minds many ways and I don t want to get into anyone s business here. That said, if skeet is to prosper, perhaps even survive as a sport, it will take more involvement from more people. What can you do? There are many little things that you can do to help. There is a list on the next page of this issue. At the Red Chute Gazette, we are doing what we can to help promote skeet through providing free advertising to clubs holding registered skeet shoots. All we ask in return is that the clubs provide us with a shoot report and a few pictures so we can show everyone how much fun they missed. The Red Chute Gazette Deal is a deal. Unfortunately, the clubs are having a very hard time getting volunteers to act as Club Reporters and provide us with a write-up and pictures. If you would volunteer to help promote skeet at your club, please contact Doug Frey at (318) or publisher@redchutegazette.com Page 42

44 The Sweetheart Shoots Greetings shooters!! Well here at CRPC Skeet or Coast Rifle and Pistol Club down in God s country [South Mississippi] we are shooting up the birds! This past weekend we held our 3 rd and 4 th shoots of the 2012 year. This was the Sweetheart Shoots. We are trying to accommodate all the shooters we can by offering this new format for the weekend. We start Saturday with shooting and Then on Saturday afternoon we shoot 50 pair of doubles for a 200 target HOA score. Sunday s program is a regular 4X50 featuring a handicapped HOA shootoff that everyone is included in at no cost. Shoot-off with 410, handicapped by your class. This is a big hit when you start with 20 plus shooters in a line!! One winner takes all the money!! This year Brian Sandidge of Long Beach took our money. Our defending champ, Diane Tyrone of Wiggins had to turn in the trophy after a great effort to repeat!! The Sweetheart Shoots are two separate shoots reporting two separate HOA scores. Allowing the shooter to shoot one or both days. Seems to be working as we had a great turnout even with marginal weather! We are attributing the weather problems to our Great State s resident weatherman!! He is also a shooter. Usually comes in disguise so as not to have to listen to the windy and cold weather complaints!! Not to mention two in a row now of squads shooting 410 in the rain. Saturday was a great day and we were blessed with the presence of this magazines publisher, Doug Frey and his lovely wife Debbie. Thanks for coming Debbie even if I almost got us thrown out of the restaurant Saturday night. Oh, you too Doug!!. Page 44

45 The Sweetheart Shoot (Continued) We really had a group worthy of having a state challenge shoot! Folks from the Bayou State, our neighbors from the east in Alabama and Florida and several of our state shooters from the North! Sunday brought many repeat victims and some new ones. Fair weather till 410 time as addressed above! But the weather didn t keep Jackson s Jeff Sullivan from taking the top HOA spot with a 196! Looks like we are getting off to a great start for the New Year. We were blessed with signing up 5 new shooters at these shoots. All the results are posted at whether you wanted them there or not!! I am currently looking for a couple more dates for this format this year. We will keep you posted thru s and this magazine. Page 45

46 The Sweetheart Shoot (Continued) Our next shoot is our Redfish Open! March 30 to April 1. Please plan to come and if you do get your squad together let me know. We already have several spots filled. Don t forget we have RV spaces, great birds, promise a lot of fun and maybe some wind!! This will be our third year for the shoot and we will offer a special added award for someone. Watch for the program soon but it will be doubles on Fri and on Sat with on Sunday! 100 each! OK Doug likes a lot of words but my fingers are tired so I will close by thanking all that came and look forward to seeing y all soon!! Oh yea, some special thanks to several folks! Guy Saenger, CJ Cates, Tom Tyrone, Tom Rushing, Glen Dawson, Mike Brown, Glenn Rickman, PJ Ponder, and Brian Sandidge for pulling targets and several other chores! Phil Ponder, Jean Juntershere, Diane Tyrone, and Julie Russell for taking care of feeding the multitudes and Clark Hartness for keeping me straight on the computer! None of these shoots would be possible if not for the folks willing to step up and help! I hope I didn t forget anyone! If I did thank you too!! Randy Brownlee Page 46
