4 Food Preparation is Practical Science Cooking involves many learning skills besides how to handle and prepare foods and how to keep food safe to eat. It also teaches children: kids in the vocabulary words and reading skillswhile a recipe is read, followed and prepared. math skills-when counting, measuring and following step-by-step directions. kitchen Cranberry Scones Sandra Bastin, Extension Specialist,Food and Nutrition, Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service Yield: 16 wedges Ingredients 3 cup self-rising flour 1 teaspoon orange peel, grated 1 cup dried cranberries (or substitute raisins for dried cranberries) 1/3 to ½ cup buttermilk ½ cup sugar ½ cup butter, softened 1 egg science-seeing how food changes during cooking. (e.g. dough rising, sugar dissolving in water, and eggs coagulating.) decision-making skills-choosing and eating nutritious foods. similarities and differences in foods of other cultures-as they prepare dishes from a variety of cultural groups. comparisons and associations in food preparation-adding too much flour results in dry, hard cookies, and doubling the ingredients in a cookie recipe yields twice as many cookies. social skills-working together with others, taking turns and solving problems, which boosts self-esteem. Clemson Cooperative Extension 1.In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar and orange peel. Mix well. Cut in butter with a pastry blender or fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gently stir in cranberries (or raisins). 2. Place egg in a 1 cup measuring cup and beat well. In the same measuring cup, add buttermilk to make 2/3 cup. Add to flour mixture and stir gently until dry ingredients begin to cling together; do not add more liquid. 3.Press dough gently together on lightly floured surface to form a ball. Divide dough in half. Place both halves on a greased cookie sheet and flatten each into a 6-inch round. Cut each into 8 wedges. Separate wedges slightly to about ½ inch apart. 4. Bake at 400 F for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on cookie sheet 5 minutes before serving. Nutritional Analysis(1 scone): 150 calories, 3 g protein, 22 g carbohydrates, 6 g fat (36%) Practice this recipe with your child and they can enter it in the Edmonson County Fair this fall!

Speeches by Senior youth (14-19 age youth) must be between 5 to 7 minutes long. Speeches by Junior youth (9-13 age youth) must be between 3 to 5 minutes. Time limit for project demonstrations will be 5 to 15 minutes with egg having a time limit of twelve minutes. Horse demonstrations must be 9-12 minutes. What is a Demonstration: A demonstration and an illustrated talk can be very similar the traditional demonstration focuses on the 4-H member telling and actively showing the group how something is made or a process is conducted. "How to Make Yeast Bread" with step by step instructions, measuring and mixing is an example of this type of presentation. Demonstrations have two divisions: Junior and Senior. This is based on your 4-H Age. Seniors are expected to demonstrate original work, including choosing their topic, researching it & writing their own demonstration. The internet may be used as a reference but not as a source for a non original demonstration. Participants may have help setting up their demonstration but may not have help during the demonstration Professional or appropriate dress is encouraged. Costumes and visual aids ARE permitted for demonstration categories. Live animals and people are not permitted as a demonstration aid. An adult may assist the 4-H member as appropriate when accommodation for disabilities is required. The adult should let the 4-H member lead the demonstration and not take initiative on their own.
