1 Tyrrell County 4-H WINTER 2017 FASHION REVUE COLUMBIA, NC TURKEY SHOW RALEIGH, NC RIVER TOWN CHRISTMAS COLUMBIA, NC NEWSLETTER NC State Fair Turkey Show The North Carolina State Fair was held October nd. On Friday, October 14 th, four Tyrrell County 4-H ers traveled to Raleigh to compete in the annual Turkey Show. Each youth had been raising three turkeys since June and picked their best to compete in the market show. Lydia Swain, Tucker Fleming, Brody Fleming, and William Schreckengost participated in competition, with Lydia Swain taking 3 rd in her group. Three other 4-H ers, Margo Lilley, Reagan Atkinson, and Walker Atkinson, also raised turkeys for the show but were not able to compete. Four Tyrrell County 4-H ers traveled to Raleigh to compete in the annual Turkey Show!1
2 River Town Christmas Tyrrell County 4-H helped kick off River Town Christmas Friday, December 2 nd. We had six youth participate in the showing of Dr. Seuss s How the Grinch Stole Christmas. During the movie, we enjoyed Christmas themed snacks and made reindeer head bands. River Town Christmas The annual River Town Christmas Parade was held Saturday, December 3 rd. Tyrrell County 4-H was invited to participate and had 18 youth ride along on the horse and carriage. During the parade, we sung Christmas carols and wished all those who came out a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. After the parade, the Columbia Senior 4-H Club hosted Visits with Santa in the Columbia Theater. Visits lasted until 6pm and over 120 children were able to sit with Santa. NC ECA Scholarships Applications for the North Carolina Extension and Community Association Scholarships are now available. Applicants may be High School Seniors or adults returning to college and from ANY county in North Carolina. The purpose of the scholarships is to assist students in obtaining a degree at any NC College, in any field of study, with priority given to Family and Consumer Sciences. Previous applicants and/or recipients may reapply each year they remain in school. The state scholarships are $800 each and the district scholarships are $500, and 2 of each will be awarded in the Northeast District. Applications are available from the Tyrrell County Cooperative Extension Office, located at 407 Martha Street in Columbia, and on our website. 3 Sew Simple Sew Simple Club Fashion Revue By: Kaitlyn Suter & Lydia Swain, Sew Simple Club President & Secretary Fashion Revue for was a success. We held our Fashion Revue on Friday, September 23 rd. Although our participation was lower than anticipated we had a great time. Our judges Sarah Exum and Hannah Rodgers were great as they judged the garments and interviewed each participant. Kaitlyn Suter, Lydia Jo Swain, and Rylee Haney did a super job modeling for the judges and all took home blue ribbons. Our wonderful group of Sew Simple members wanted to not only make something for themselves, but make something for the charity as well. Our club members made a variety of things for themselves. The garments made included dresses, skirts, pajamas, and tote bags. For our contribution to charity last year we made pillow cases for the Shriners Hospital. In this upcoming year we have a lot planned. We plan on making lap quilts for the Tyrrell House and we also plan on having our Fashion Revue sometime in May. Our new sewing projects will soon begin so come join the fun now. We meet most 2 nd Fridays with some additional sewing workshop times when possible. Creativity is contagious, pass it on. 4 IN OTHER NEWS District Activity Day Presentations are a great way to improve your public speaking skills and have fun doing it. When you do 4-H presentations, you gain recognition, meet new people, and have the chance to participate in district and state events. It is open to ages 5-18, and you may use posters or powerpoint to give a 5-12 minute presentation on just about anything. Begin working on your presentation today! (252) Achievement Night - Date TBD 4-H Achievement Night is a time to recognize and honor all that our 4-H ers and volunteers have accomplished over the last year. Recognition will be given to those who completed project record books, presentations, participated in district and state events, and club officers. We will also recognize our Club Leaders and volunteers who make this program possible. This year we would like to incorporate talent acts and speeches throughout the program.
