1 Summer Break Ends: At summers end August 1965, the city of Lineville closed and locked the swimming pool for the upcoming winter months. The leaves on the trees began to turn brown and the smell of Aggie football was in the air. Coaches Jack Stewart and Gerald Dial began two-a-day practices with the returning players on the Aggie football team. Pre-School Shopping: Ingram s, Style & Gift Shop, McCrary s, and The Fair Store, were some of the places students shopped for the start of school ware. Boys dressed out in Wrangler blue jeans, short sleeve shirts, penny loafers, and bobby socks. The girls dressed out in either tight hoop skirts or tight above the knee skirts. The also wore penny loafers with bobby socks. The first day of the 1965\66 school year was bright and sunny. All students, with class schedules in hand, met together outside the front entry of the high school. The many student clicks gathered together searching out the new students. Many of the new students came from the junior highs in Barfield, Delta, and Highlands. The first bell rung and everyone proceeded to their home room classes. Student Lockers: The senior class chose their lockers first. The rest of the classes were able to choose their lockers by grade level. After locker selection we did a walk through our class schedule which was 30 min each class and included a 15 min recess and 1hr. lunch break. 1

2 Aggie Football: The 1966 Aggie football team came into the season with two returning starters from the 1965 Aggie team. In the backfield were three time all Cheaha Conference and All-State running back Roger Mezick (20) and all Cheaha Conference lineman Fred Barton (75). The Aggies had a record of loosening to AA State Champs Dadeville and AAA State Champions Columbiana. During Jack Stewart s reign the Aggies never lost a football game to cross town revivals Ashland Panthers. Aggie Basketball: The Aggie basketball had a solid senior team led by All-State and All Cheaha Conference Guard Johnny Bachus. The Aggies posted a 22-8 season record winning the Cheaha Conference Championship and was third place finisher in the State AA Championship tournament in Tuscaloosa. The Aggie Cheerleader squad was led by senior Jennifer Brown. After Game Parties: The cheerleaders took turns hosting after home game parties for the players. Many of the gatherings were at the Red & White or Howard Schultz s Burgers when the team arrived back from away games. 2

3 Lunch and Morning Recess: The morning recess was a 15 min break between 2 nd and 3 rd period. At the bell everyone would take a casual walk to the gym for cokes and peanut butter crackers or other snacks. The coke box was at the right step entrance and the snack shop was the glass window between the two steps. Most everyone gathered at the left entrance to the gym. The new cafeteria was built on the playground at the elementary school and everyone walked across for lunch. Many others, like me, would either go home for lunch or go to the Howard Shultz s burgers. After lunch everyone would gather outside the front of the high school or at the gym on rainy days. Fall Sock Hops: The old gym was the usual location for the sock hops. The girls PE classroom had an old turntable that played 45 s and a PA system with two old speakers. Most all the music was brought to the sock hop by those who could afford the 45 s. Hit songs like Wooly Bully by Sam The Sham and The Pharaohs and Down Town by Petula Clark were played. The coke machines were filled for those who wanted to purchase drinks. I don t remember ever having snacks there. Homecoming Parade: There was always a homecoming parade took place each year. The parade was scheduled after lunch and traveled through down town. There was a contest to see which class could come up with the best float idea and decorate it. The 66 senior class float was voted the winner. Yearbook Photos: In October the yearbook photographer arrived to take all photos for the Aggie Echo. All seniors were instructed to wear nice slacks, shoes, and coat and tie. The girls were told to wear nice church like dresses and shoes. 3

4 Thanksgiving Holidays: Christmas Holidays: Semester Exams: Sadie Hawkins Dance: Sadie Hawkins Day Dance, a special dance event where only the girl is allowed to ask; boys get to experience what it feels like to wait and wonder if they'll be invited.
