THE STAMPEDE MHS Journalism 10th Edition Division IV SECTION CHAMPS Manteca High was on a short #roadtothering journey, 3 games, 3 teams, and 3 wins. In the third game, Manteca High played Placer, a great defensive team. Right when the game started, Placer scored and led the Buffs 7-0, after almost no gain on yards, Placer had the ball again and scored another touchdown. Placer then had a 14-0 lead with 6 minutes still in the 1 st quarter. Manteca High stepped it up after that, and scored. Placer now only had a 14-7 lead now. Placer scored again and now it was 21-7, Manteca came back and scored twice before halftime and tied the game up at at halftime. Manteca led the rest of the game, scoring 50 points, and not until the last quarter Placer scored a touchdown making the final score The Herd celebrated with their usual cheer I believe that we just won. Manteca Highs Football team rushed the field and created a huge huddle, hugging and congratulating each other. So here we are, the short 3 week journey ended in victory having the 2016 Manteca High Varsity football team become your 2016 Division IV Section Champions!!
ROAD TO THE RING So most of us know that our Manteca High Buffaloes Varsity Football team is on the #roadtothering and #bluebannerbound. Three games need to be won to get the ring. The first game, Manteca played the #8 ranked Dixon High. Manteca High won their first game against the Rams on November 11 th. The Buffaloes played their second game against the Los Banos Tigers on November 18 th at Gus Schmeidt Field. We asked a few people about how they thought the game would go, and everyone said it would be a close game, and a good game to watch. The Buffaloes came out successful with a huge 52-0 win. 2

The Champs are back Here at MHS, football has always been the main sport, but it was a huge surprise that our basketball team had huge success. Last season, our boys basketball team brought back a State Title for Manteca High. With high spirits to repeat this, the boys will need to put in a lot of hard work and effort during the preseason. Losing some of our star players, such as Kenny Wooten, and Anand Hundal, will be a difficult challenge to overcome for the Buff boys, but nothing they can t do. Our returning boys know how stressful the season can be, but with a ton of new people joining the Varsity Buffs they have the potential to repeat history, and hopefully more. We expect not only our boys, but girls basketball to have an outstanding season. Making it to the state game was a first for the MUSD s oldest high school, whose athletic programs continue to ascend to new heights in the 21st century even though their facilities remain a thing of the past. Although it is a few weeks away, on December 1 st we are hosting our boy s first nonconference game against the Lincoln High Trojans in Winter Gymnasium. Be there, loud and proud, showing your Buffalo pride. The Buff s will need all the support from their family, friends, and the Herd. With winter sports on their way in, we have no doubts that both of our Manteca basketball teams will bring back many titles here, and make MHS an all-around sports school. Vanessa Alicea 4
Soccer is Back Manteca High school is known for our outstanding achievements in sports. With our Varsity Football boys making it to playoffs to our Varsity Boys Basketball team being state champs, Manteca High is ready to start winter sports. Boys and Girls soccer is ready to begin once again. The Girls are getting ready to bring home the Section champs title again. Last season our Soccer girls brought home a victorious season by winning VOLs and Sections. The Boys soccer team had a great season although they didn t bring back a title they tried their hardest and are ready to start a new season full of wins. Our expectations for this season are high for our soccer team considering we did an outstanding job last season in bring home the section champs title. We expect the Girls soccer team to outshine and win once again. We hope our Boys soccer team will thrive this season and put in all their energy into having a great season. They did a great job last season and we are hoping for another win. Overall our sports at Manteca High are overwhelmingly outstanding and with our fall sports ending and our winter sports ready to begin we have no doubts that our Soccer team won t disappoint. Go Buffs! On the stage On November 17 the thespian club held and open mic night for people to have fun and let loose the thespian club encourages everyone to be a part of something and to not be afraid. Everyone need a place that makes them feel like they belong and thespian club is the pace to be. Open mic night was a success and it gave people a chance to come out of their shell and show people who they really are. Don t miss another chance to show people what you re made of and shine like the star that you are. 5
Feminist Club By: Jessie Giampietro Mrs. Haskett is the new and awesome advisor to the Feminist Club on our campus. The club got created last year ( ) and Ms. Mello was the advisor. Since she retired last year, and I m the Women s Studies teacher, I was the perfect choice to take over, and I was more than happy to do so. Many students would also think that Mrs. Haskett would be the perfect teacher to advise this club because of her passion for everything she does. To Mrs. Haskett the club is a place for interested individuals to fight for gender equality and bring a voice to the movement. Feminism is often misunderstood in our society, often because the loudest individuals do not accurately represent the ideals of gender equality, and many people are therefore afraid of Feminism or afraid of calling themselves Feminists. So the club allows students to learn what Feminism really is, as well as fight for gender equality on our campus and community. To us, it represents a place to question traditionally-accepted truths, such as gender norms and gender stereotypes; it s also a place for us to celebrate human beings as they truly are, defying the boxes society tries to force us into. You can tell everyone involved is ardent about equality in society. Those who share the same beliefs decided to make the Feminist Club a club. The main advocates for the club are its officers: President Alexis O Donnell, Vice-President Daisy Talavera, Secretary Mya Blanco, and Treasurer Haylee Chance. All four are also in my Women s Studies class and made sure to keep the club around this year after Mello retired. They are the school s most gender-conscious and stereotype-aware students the definition of woke. I wish I d had them as friends when I was in high school. They are the best allies anyone could have. The four students fought for this club, which has been a place for many students to feel safe with their beliefs. The Feminist Club is planning on doing a fundraiser to help those in need of feminine products. We re planning a tampon drive which might sound weird, but it s to draw attention to the fact that women experiencing homelessness often have an incredibly difficult time locating feminine hygiene products; many people donate to shelters, but often forget that homeless women still get their periods. So we re trying to collect hygiene products so women will be taken care of, but we also want to try to address the issue that the female body and period are taboo topics that people think are icky to talk about. We want to normalize the topic, because half the population has the deal with it, and the majority of the other half of the population knows someone who has to deal with it. Why is it weird? It shouldn t be. Haskett gave a situation where someone once asked, What kind of Feminists are you? Cause I want to join, but I don t hate men. And I thought that was so sad people so often associate Feminism with hating men, and that s just not the truth. The extremists (who do hate men) are often the most vocal, but certainly not representative of reality. Feminism is about gender equality the right for women to be respected the same as men, to be given the same chances as men (and vice versa). Stereotypes are degrading for all genders, and it s important for us to learn that, in order to be whole human beings, we have to defy the stereotypes society places on us. If any students reading this relate to or believe in any of the things this club does, come to the meetings right after school on
Thanksgiving The last few months of the year are the best months of the year. We have Halloween on October 31 st and on November 1 st, it is basically Christmas! Just kidding we cannot forget Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is right around the corner which means beans, greens, potatoes, tomatoes, lamb, rams, hogs, dogs, chickens, turkeys, rabbit, you name it (Shirley Caesar). (Sorry for the last half of that I do not eat lamb, rams, dogs, or rabbit though.) Thanksgiving is the day you eat like there s no tomorrow regardless of whether you are hungry or not. To the people who are on a diet, November 24 will be your ultimate cheat day. After that feast of a meal shopping; which is a good form of exercise to burn all of those calories you will consume. Great food and great sales what s not to love about Thanksgiving?! Aside from the food and the sales, we cannot ignore the true meaning of Thanksgiving: giving thanks. When you think about it, Thanksgiving is good for the soul. It reminds us to express our gratitude and have a positive outlook on life. To not focus on the materialistic things but to see the big picture: family, friends, and loved ones. To not take our families, friends, and loved ones for granted. Instead of complaining about what we do not have, we should be genuinely grateful for what we do have. Thanksgiving reminds us to take the time to acknowledge and appreciate our blessings on blessings on blessings.
Teacher appreciation: Mr. Valencia 75% of our students, at Manteca high, take Spanish at one point in their life. We have many wonderful Spanish teachers. One of them is Mr. Valencia, he is in the 70 wing. Mr. Valencia was a team advisor for hiking club with Mr. Burr, from 2006 to He has been teaching for 12 years now, went to Stanislaus State for his bachelor of arts and a masters at Sacramento State. I became a Spanish teacher because I felt Latino culture in the high school was underrepresented and needed a role model to help in any possible way. His favorite thing about teaching Spanish is just sharing his culture. Some of the lessons he liked teaching is about geography of Latin America. For examples, some student had no idea where Colombia is located. One person who inspired him was Malcolm X. For his last hike with hiking club in 2015, they went to Mount. Diablo. He said, I really enjoy the scents that nature has and the beautiful mornings there. He misses hiking sometimes but right now he has more clubs to worry about such as the MECHA club. He has been on one hike this year, with his wife to Lake Tahoe. Altogether, his favorite hikes are in the pinnacles national park by Hollister, California. After a hike, he feels content with himself and everything around him. I encourage students be themselves and don t try to be like anyone else, work hard and It will pay off. I also encourage teachers, we are in this together, let s all be team players! Lastly, I made my mother proud, she brought me from Mexico when I was a teenager and has seen everything I have done in my life. I only make her proud of me and not ashamed. #teacher appreciation #go buffs!
