Stage 2 FEAR Week 1 Skit Sample (OYM/CR) Definition: Having the right view of God s perfect authority, justice, and grace Memory Verse: DEUTERONOMY 10:12 (NLT) And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you? He requires only that you fear the Lord your God, and live in a way that pleases Him, and love Him and serve Him with all your heart and soul. WEEK 1 FINISH LINE (11/5-6): Fear begins by believing God is not safe but He is good MAIN SCRIPTURE: 1 Samuel 17 David and Goliath Characters Trudy: The team s female student manager/watergirl. Her dad was the greatest kicker of all time, both at the school and later in the NFL. He was the best because he worked the hardest, constantly practicing and studying. Because of this, Trudy always interacted with her dad over football, and served as his holder as he spent hours a day in kicking drills. She is an encyclopedia of football knowledge and strategy. She would play the game if she were a boy, and would coach it if she were an adult; she takes the next best option available to her by serving as manager. Enthusiasm of the girl in Remember the Titans Brady: The new star quarterback for the team. He s arrogant, often thinks he knows better than the coach on what plays to run, and struggles to submit to his authority. 22: Running back/jock. Heavy comedic character. Never quite gets what s going on, but trusts the coach. Coach: An old-school football coach, along the lines of Tom Landry. A very firm but fair and kind coach. He s respectable and is not one who yells to get his point across; he doesn t need to. He is also the best coach you could ever hope to have. Stage design A football locker room. One corner holds an old, forgotten trophy case. Some of the major Props include a bench, a whiteboard, football uniforms, towels, and a water cooler with cup/water bottles. Hey Marching Band Song Lights Up Trudy comes in pushing the cart and picking up towels/cleaning up locker room. She is talking to herself, muttering about how bad the guys keep the place. She notices the crowd of kids and turns to talk to them. Trudy: Oh, hey everyone! Welcome to H-town high. Home of the fighting Hens! I know strange name, but it is what it is. Anyway this is the locker room. The team should be coming in for practice pretty soon, so I have to get this place cleaned up. (Starts working to clean everything up and then stops) Oh, I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Trudy McDougall. I am the trainer-slash-water girl-slash-sweat towel girl-slash-biggest Hen s fan EVER. My Dad played football here and has been taking me to the games for as long as I can remember. I know everything there is to know about football, especially Hen s football. Our coach, Coach Aslan, he s the best. He is what some would call unconventional. He doesn t always play it safe, but in the end, he is as good as it comes. #22 comes running in. He has a jersey over his shoulder and a football in his hand. 1
#22: Hey Trudy, think fast. (Throws his jersey at Trudy) Sorry, but I just found it in my bag from last year and it hasn t really been washed since. Trudy: (sniffs jersey and gags) Ooh, that is awful. Did you ever wash it even once last year? #22: Uhhhh probably not. Anyway, thanks for the help Trudy. Trudy: (to Audience) That s #22. Yes, I know, strange name. It s actually his middle name. (as if trying to remember) And I forget why he doesn t go by his first name. (Turns back to #22) Hey, have you heard anything about this new QB that just transferred. #22: (clueless) We got a new quarterback? Trudy: Where have you been? #22: (shrugs shoulders) Hmmm... (picks up a football and walks out) Ok, see you later. Trudy: Alright let s see what kind of inventory we have here. (Trudy picks up her clipboard and starts working) That s 48 helmets, 50 sets of pads AB walks in and takes the clipboard from her. Brady: And so it begins. (Signs sheet) There you go! (Hands clipboard back) Trudy: I beg your pardon? Brady: Well, clearly you wanted my autograph. Hey I m good to my fans. Trudy: What? No, I was about to ask Sorry Only one autograph per family Trudy: Who ARE you? And what do you think you are doing in my field house? Who am I? Yeah right, like you don t know who I am Do you not get Sports Illustrated? Trudy: Actually, I asked for it for my 8 th birthday and have read every issue since. Then you ve definitely seen me. Does Aaron Brady, Sports Illustrated and Gatorade National High School Player of the Year ring a bell? Trudy: Oh Aaron Brady. (Looks at clipboard autograph) Is that what this says? Kinda looks like a flower. room. Whatever, that s what they call cursive. Hey since when did they start letting fans into the locker Trudy: (looks around to see who he could be talking to) Are you talking about me? 2
Yeah, do they always just let random people hang around in here? Trudy: So, I m going to give you and your attitude a little grace and then fill you in. My name is Trudy, and while I do happen to be the Hen s biggest fan, I m also the trainer, water girl, equipment manager, (pats on head and says with a smile) and pretty much the last person that you want to upset if you are a player on this team. Yeah, but I m the new quarterback. So, you should treat me Trudy: (interrupting) just like everyone else. Now, Coach should be here any second. (turns to leave) (calling after her) Hey, what s he like anyway? I ve heard stories #22 enters with a football that he is throwing in the air, he is listening to music and singing. Trudy: (yells back) You ll have to ask 22. See ya. Aaron Brady walks up and takes the football as he is throwing it in the air and pulls out his pen and signs it. 22: What are you doing? Don t worry, I gotcha. This will be worth something someday. 22: Hey man, that s one of the team footballs. Coach, or Trudy for that matter, is not going to like that. Just thought you might want a souvenir. 22: I don t even know who you are, dude. Really? Do you people even like football? Aaron Brady Sports Illustrated and Gatorade National High School Player of the Year? I m your new QB. #22: Oh yeahhhhh, you re from Arizona or something, right? (face palm) California. Anyway, what position do you play? #22: I ve always played running back. Family legacy My dad played running back, my uncle played running back, so did my granddad and two of my great aunts. Your aunts? What? Ok, and, where did you get the name, 22? #22: It s actually my middle name. I used to go by my first, but it got confusing when people were yelling at me from the sideline. What s your first name? 3
#22: Blue. Wait, your name is actually Blue 22? Yeah I could see where that gets confusing. So, what is the coach like? #22: Oh man like no one you have ever played for. He never does anything like what you would think. He takes the unexpected and uses it to his advantage. And he never plays it safe... BUT, he is good. The best. When my dad met with him before we moved, he mentioned he was a little unorthodox. But I just don t get it, he didn t even play football, right? Coach comes walking in with Trudy. He is not the intimidating guy that one would necessarily think. He comes across as a pretty nice guy but his true fire and determination will be shown eventually. AB is oblivious to the fact that he has walked in and keeps miming talking to 22 as Trudy and Coach talk. Trudy: So we will start out with warmups, then move on to the tackling drills? What else do I need to know, sir? Coach: I m not sure yet, I ll let you know. Who all is here already? Trudy: Well, 22, of course, and the new guy, Aaron Brady, the QB. Coach: Oh yeah. I need to meet him; I ve only chatted with his dad. (walks toward AB) Trudy: (to the audience) This ought to be good. 22 sees coach walking up, and clams up and acts awkward as AB goes on and on. So is it true that Coach only played tennis? I mean, can he not take the hits? Whatever, I just hope he knows how to use me and my talents to really take this program to the promised land. Coach clears his throat. As 22 points to tell him to quit. Oh, is that that Trudy again? She probably wants another autograph AB turns around and looks over coach and then down to him, doesn t realize it s Coach Coach: Aaron Brady? (puffed up) That s right. Sports Illustrated and Gatorade National High School Player of the Year, Aaron Brady. Who s asking? Coach: (still kind) I m Coach Aslan. (AB deflates a little) Glad you made it to practice. Your dad said you played a little football in California and wanted to come try out for us? Yeah, if you think that going undefeated as a sophomore, winning a California state championship, AND beating the top team in Texas, a little football 4
#22: Wait Washington High? You were the QB for Washington High?! Trudy, isn t that the only team that s beat Middlebrook in the last three years? Trudy: Yes, Middlebrook s only loss was to Washington in an exhibition game. Their quarterback threw for 5 touchdowns guess that was Aaron Brady, here. #22: Wow, I guess we are going to need you if we ever have to play those guys. What do you mean, IF we ever have to play them? Won t we see them in playoffs, when I lead you guys to a state title. Trudy: Uh, guys, I don t know if you remember, but we are making the super unique move of jumping from 3A to 5A in Texas. We are no longer the big dog, no team our size has ever won a state championship. Coach: (watching it all take place) Well, all of this is interesting data, folks, thanks for sharing. How about we get ready and head on out to practice. We have two weeks of two a-days before our first game and a long way before we ever think about State, or Middlebrook for that matter. Aaron, glad you re here. I m looking forward to seeing if you win the QB job. 22, I know you re not much of a passer, but why don t you warm up your arm as well. Might have you toss a little today. #22: Ok coach, whatever you say. I trust you. (gets pads and helmet and leaves) Aaron: I m sorry, coach, but you know my credentials. Last year alone, I completed 55 of 76 passes, threw for 394 yards, and ran for 7 touchdowns. Why would I need to win the starting QB job? Coach: (very calm) Well, a couple of reasons there, Aaron: first of all, I am the coach, and what I say goes. Second, you ve played football in California this is Texas, big difference. And finally, I didn t get to where I am today by going with what seemed right to everyone else. You see, my playbook is the Bible, and it teaches me that God can often use the people that you least expect. So, no decisions are being made today. All I m asking you to do is go out and do your best. But I am the best. Coach: Confidence is good. But I will use my team as I see fit to be the best WE can be. Now, go suit up. (Aaron leaves with pads) Trudy: (turns to crowd) Ok, didn t see that coming. Can t imagine that is going to go over well with Aaron and 22? Great running back, not much of an arm. But I told you, Coach doesn t always make the safe choice. I guess we ll see what happens at the end of two-a-days (exits) Lights dim - Coach and Trudy come walking in together. Two weeks have passed. Trudy: Great last practice, Coach. Can t believe how fast these last two weeks have gone by, and that the game against Kramer is THIS Friday. You think we re ready? Coach: Well, Trudy, it s going to be a challenge. The guys in this district are really big, and that one defensive lineman for Kramer is a giant. But I think we can beat them if we play our game. Speaking of, can you bring the QB s in here? 5
Trudy: Sure, Coach, I ll get them. (Starts talking to audience as she moves toward exit to yell at AB & 22) This isn t going to be much of a conversation. Aaron Brady has lived up to his billing, he s amazing. And 22? Well, he still can t throw. (Yells off stage) QB s! Report to Coach s office! (back to audience) But you never know with Coach. Both jogging up to coach Hey Coach. #22: You wanted to see us, Coach? Coach: Boys, I wanted to talk about the plan for Friday. Two-a-days have been interesting, but only one of you can start on Friday. You both heard about the big guy for Kramer? Yeah, he s like a , defensive lineman that is committed to Alabama. I hope that your lineman can block him. Otherwise, the season could be over before it gets started if I get hurt. Coach: Interesting take, Aaron, but they aren t my linemen, they are our linemen we are a team. 22, what are your thoughts? #22: I don t know, Coach. But I trust your game plan more than I fear that guy. Whatever position you want me to play is ok by me. Running back, QB, whatever. But, aren t you even a little scared of that guy? #22: No, not really. It kinda reminds me of a story Coach told me about David and Goliath. See everyone was scared of this one, huge guy, Goliath, but David was more concerned about fearing God. So, he went out and God actually used him to kill Goliath. Anyway, Coach said something about how fear begins by believing God s not safe but He s good. So, I say, if David can trust God and take on a giant, then we can take down Kramer s giant if we trust Coach s game plan. Coach: Great point, 22. You start on Friday. #22: Woah, thanks coach. I m going to go shower up. #22 runs off stage and coach walks off behind him. AB is still sitting there, mouth open, looking at the ground in disbelief Trudy: Seems our all-star QB is understandably confused. How are you, Brady? I don t get it? I ve been out performing 22 in ALL of our two a-days. Coach knows I m the better QB and that I have twice the arm. This isn t fair. Coach is crazy to think that you can win with 22. He s a running back with no arm. Trudy: But Coach has made his decision. The safer choice might be you and your arm, Aaron, but if I know Coach, he s always going to go to battle with a guy that he knows will trust his game plan no matter what. 6
But he guaranteed me that if I played well Trudy: (Gentle, but firm) He never guaranteed you anything. He told you to bring your best, and that he d make the best decision for the team. (Now more encouraging) Just keep working hard, and when the time comes, he ll use you. Coach didn t get to where he is by always going with the safe or obvious choice. Whatever, I m outta here. It will be fun so see you guys lose. (Storms off and almost runs into coach who comes walking back in) Coach: See you tomorrow, Aaron. Good practice today. (to Trudy) Everything alright in here? Trudy: Just think he s still learning your style, Coach. Speaking of, you think I need to pack that extra jersey for the game this week? Coach: Not this one, Trudy, but I ll let you know when. Now let s get out of here We have a big game on Friday. Both exit Lights out Hey song 7
