1 NEWSLETTER #29 March 28, 2018 AUG S BLOG Visitation Family, I think this week has been one of my favorites thus far this school year. On Tuesday, our 7th grade put on a moving reenactment of the Stations of the Cross. They used a white screen and shadows to portray the stations. In between, students read reflective questions that made each of us think about our Lord s suffering. We then had a liturgical dance performed by our 7th grade girls. Our second grade participated in their Jesus Day and bread sharing events this week. Students made and then broke bread together. Mrs. Hunt directed the students in their own version of the Last Supper. Our 6th grade visited the Holocaust museum and actually spoke with a Holocaust survivor. The students were interested, engaged and shocked to hear his story. This Holy Week at Visitation gave us all time to reflect on our lives and the sacrifices our Lord made for us. I invite all of you to continue in this time of reflection by attending the liturgy for Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil. If you have never attended these events, they are truly beautiful. Several parishioners, including Lizzie and Sean Murray, will have their feet washed at the Holy Thursday service. On Friday, we will read the passion and venerate the cross. The Easter Vigil welcomes our new members of the church into our family. The lighting of the fire is quite powerful. School calendars went home with students today. Rice Bowls can be returned after Easter if you have not yet returned them. Just a reminder, our Handbook states that if a child must be excused from school during any part of the day, a written note stating the reason is required before the requested absence. We will also accept s to the teacher, provided it is sent the day prior or early morning. Some teachers are not able to check their s during the day. If an emergency appointment is made the same day, please call the school office. I wish you all a peaceful and safe Easter Break! Take time to be a family. Play games, eat dinner around the table, visit a park or go to mass as a family. It s important to take advantage of your down time! Check us out on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter@visitationcincy. Don t forget to spend time with your family at mass this weekend! COOK S CURRICULUM CORNER We no longer have Read-a-Thon as a fundraiser. However, we are going to continue to celebrate student reading! We will celebrate with "read week" as soon as we get back from spring break. Be sure to check out the schedule of events on the flyer attached to the newsletter. The flyer will come home with students today. Students are encouraged to read all week April 9 th -13 th and record their minutes read on the flyer as well as have their parents sign the log each night. Student prizes can be found on the back of the flyer! On Monday, when students return to school they can wear a shirt with words and come to school out of uniform. Students can create a shirt or simply find a shirt at home that has words. We are celebrating our ability to read on Monday! We will also be collecting gently used books to donate to The Literacy Network all week. The classroom that collects the most books will win an out of uniform day! This week fifth graders explored potential and kinetic energy while engineering roller coasters using pipe insulation and marbles! They worked in groups to design and build the fastest roller coaster and classified energy as potential or kinetic while describing changes that occurred along the ride. They used their math skills to compute the speed of their marble using the length of their coaster track and

2 the time it took to pass through the track. It was a great activity to get the students communicating as a team while working towards their goal of building the fastest coaster! Enjoy celebrating Easter week with your family and friends! This year, we will are offering TWO opportunities for those interested; April and July 30-August 2, in the Church Hall. For $50, we will provide you with the required training and testing materials in order to become a SAY certified official, and also provide you with a yellow referee shirt, a whistle, patch and cards. Entry level referees make $20/game, more than ever before! Referees must at least be entering the 8 th grade. Refereeing provides a great way for young students to get involved in their community, learn communication skills, and learn more about a sport they love, while earning some spending money. Games are scheduled 2-3 weeks in advance and played all day Saturday, Sunday afternoons, and weeknights. Our flexible scheduling system allows you to mark times you are unavailable, and you will have the ability to mark any amount of unavailability, so you can referee as many games as fits your schedule. Typically games are scheduled in sets of 2-4, so you can make as much as $80 in a day. There is no minimum number of games you are expected to officiate a year, but our best first year referees typically officiate at least one set of games every other weekend. To register, or for more information contact Nick Roth at wcsareferee@gmail.com. Green Township Library: Come to the Green Township Library for Special Needs Family Night.
