1 GALWAY PTSA MEETING MINUTES May 9, 2017 CALL TO ORDER : Crystal Walker, President called the meeting to order at 7PM ATTENDANCE: 16 People in attendance (including Jennifer Hall Director of Pupil Services) *Nadine DesPres, Vice President was unable to attend due to a prior commitment and change of date of the meeting INTRODUCTION : Crystal Walker, President asked for Approval of April Minutes. Lauren Jordan made a motion to accept and Amber Eaton Seconded. Minutes Approved. Crystal thanked those in attendance that were able to attend after the date was changed due to the Book Fair night. GUEST SPEAKERS: Maya Vanderhorst, High School Student requested financial assistance to attend a STEAM Conference in Rome, NY July 30-August 5th. Maya was nominated by our School to attend. Cost for the week is $1,300 which includes lodging, meals and workshops. The Conference will include workshops, a career fair, and leadership skills. Maya spoke of her ability to bring back to the school any information she will learn and share it with others. She is currently President of the Student Senate, Secretary of the Class of 2019, Secretary and Treasurer of the Robotics Club, Secretary of the Leo s Club, member of the National Honor Society and a member of the Best Buddies program. Maya is also involved in Sports and interested in the Biomedical Engineering Field. Before requesting funds from the PTSA, Maya contacted the Dockstader Charitable Trust but was unable to secure funding because she is an individual. Crystal Walker, President will research the funding of individuals as it pertains to PTSA guidelines. Jeanine Flinton, Elementary School Liaison as well as Cheryl Malanoski, Secretary both spoke of Maya s involvement in numerous school related offices and clubs and the benefit her attendance at the Conference could have to our School. Crystal will contact Maya to confirm her findings.
2 BUDGET: Amber Eaton, Treasurer provided the most recent copies of the Budget. General Account is $15, Amber spoke of Spirit Wear being the only negative balance at this time. She has added $2 to each new Spirit Wear item on the current order form (as voted in the past) to ensure the balance becomes positive as orders come in. Amber also reported that membership is currently at 163. PTSA goal was 178. Membership may increase due to Kindergarten Screening opportunities. DANCE: Loretta Martin along with Lauren Jordan reported that 22 dance students on the Competition Team had a wonderful outcome at a recent competition. They brought home 4 trophies! Enough now that our trophy cases are full at the school!! PTSA Dance will donate 2 trophy cases to the School. Other clubs will also be able to display their awards in the new cases. Dance will also be making improvements to their current dance space within the school. The upcoming Dance Recital will be on Saturday, June 3rd at 11 AM. SPIRIT WEAR: Amber Eaton showed the new Spring Line samples of Spirit Wear that are now available to order! Polos, Dri fit shirts, tank tops, shorts, tshirts, baseball type caps along with School umbrellas looked great!! Popular with the crowd were the variety in colors. Orders are due May 17th to ensure delivery by the end of School. Spirit wear forms are available online on our School website under the Community Tab/PTSA-Spirit Wear.
3 BOOK FAIR: Emma O Bern, Book Fair Coordinator reported the Committee is set and ready to go for the Camping themed Fair. Many Volunteers have signed up online to help. Students in the Elementary School will receive a FREE book! Kindergarten Screening will be taking place the first few days of the Fair. New Parents and Students to our School can see the excitement for themselves. There are many fun additions to the Fair including Pencil Grams, a Treasure Map, chances to win Posters, and Raffle Baskets at the night events. Book sales help us earn Scholastic Dollars to be used within our School. Please come out and support this popular event! The upcoming Fall Book Fair theme will be The Wild West!! AFTER PROM: Students Maya Vanderhorst and Tyler Larson (Juniors) asked if the upcoming Gawking portion of Prom Night could be carried out in a certain way they had envisioned? They thought PTSA had paid for this part of Prom Night. Meg Podrazik, representing Black Tie Events and Catering, told the Students that actually she had donated her services for the Gawking before the buses head to the Prom. Crystal Walker, President suggested Maya and Meg exchange contact information so that Meg is aware of the Students wishes. We look forward to seeing the Prom goers at Gawking beginning at 5 PM on Prom Night (Saturday, May 20th) at the High School. There will be an After Prom Meeting, May 10th at 7 PM to finalize steps for the Great Escape Lodge. OLD BUSINESS: Cheryl Malanoski, Coordinator, Thank Your Bus Driver Day, reported that a nice morning was had by all on May 4th at the Bus Garage. The foods and gifts were well received. Thank you to Amy Willbrant, Janet Van Rijsewijk, Amanda Friedman and Gail Symonds, Elementary Principal, Michelle McDougall and Superintendent, Mr. Shine, and the Elementary School student card makers for helping out on this event! If anyone would like to become the Coordinator of this event next year please contact galwayptsa@gmail.com we d be happy to train you for this great event!
4 NEW BUSINESS: Lauren Jordan announced that The Nominating Committee received 2 nominations thus far for the Executive Officer positions for the 2017/2018 School Year. Lauren Jordan reported that Corrine Hahn is seeking the Secretary position and Julie Ramsey is seeking the position of Vice President. Both Crystal Walker, President and Amber Eaton, Treasurer would like to continue in their current positions. There is still time for anyone to announce their intentions to seek any of these positions. Final voting takes place at our final PTSA meeting of the school year on Thursday, June 15th at 6:30 PM. We thank Julie and Corrine for their active volunteering in the PTSA and for their willingness to take the next step and become part of the Executive Board. New Board Members help PTSA grow for the Future!! Joanna Paterek, Webpage Coordinator announced that the School will be revamping its website. She has archived the PTSA files for this transition. Joanna has also agreed to continue as the Webpage Coordinator for the 2017/2018 School year. Thank you to Joanna for keeping our website up to date and for all the great changes she made for us this year! OPEN FORUM DISCUSSIONS/CONCERNS: Lauren Jordan reminded us that the Lifetime Membership Award should be explored for possible candidates. There are also nominations from last year that could be revisited. This award is for a deserving volunteer(s) and not only includes PTSA volunteers but can be from any organization in our community. If you have a volunteer in mind please contact PTSA to follow nomination steps. PTSA is always looking for NEW ideas and feedback. Please contact us with your ideas/concerns. We welcome and appreciate your input. Our is: galwayptsa@gmail.com
