1 EHS Cheer Organization Guidelines
2 Mission Statement The mission of the cheer organization is to create, promote, and uphold school spirit in accordance with this district and the Elgin Independent School District Student Code of Conduct. Membership and participation in the cheer organization provides opportunities for performance experience at all levels, successful personal growth, leadership, citizenship and life-long learning. Statement of Understanding The following guidelines must be followed by all Elgin Independent School District cheer organization members. Members of the cheer organization are representatives of Elgin ISD and each member must maintain high moral and ethical standards. Membership is from tryout date to tryout date the following school year. Cheer organization members include, but are not limited to, cheerleaders and school mascots. Candidate Requirements for Membership Section A Candidate Standards 1. Candidates must be willing to abide by rules and follow directions. 2. Candidates must be willing to set high standards as a representative of Elgin ISD. 3. Candidates must exhibit and maintain a positive attitude toward school policies and regulations. 4. Candidates must enjoy learning and performing the activities of a spirit leader. 5. Candidates must demonstrate responsibility at all times. 6. Candidates must strive toward excellence and understand that the schedule and discipline of a spirit organization member demands a high degree of determination, hard work, strength, dedication, and self-discipline. 2
3 7. Candidates must have a desire to work cooperatively and work as a team. 8. Candidates, pending eligibility status, will participate in all activities in which the organization is involved, including spirit activities, fundraising, school, and community events. 9. Candidates must be passing all courses at date designated by coach prior to tryouts. 10. The parent/guardian must be willing to meet all financial obligations of the student s cheer organization membership (for example, uniform and activity costs). Payments must be received by the campus s specified dates. Section B Grade Levels of Membership 1. Upcoming ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students are eligible for consideration for the junior varsity cheerleading squad. 2. Upcoming ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students are eligible for consideration for the varsity squad. 3. Final team selection will be based on the natural point break at the discretion of the administrative designee. QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP Section A Tryout Eligibility 1. All candidates must be passing all courses by 4:00 pm, Wednesday, March 5, A parent/guardian is required to attend the mandatory tryout meeting on February 25, 2014, at 6:00 pm in the Elgin High School library. Failure to attend or meet with the coach/director will result in the candidate s ineligibility for tryouts. 3. At the discretion of the coach, new-to-school students may be eligible for an individual tryout. 4. A Previous Cheer Participation form may be required for any new-toschool students. 3
4 Section B Tryout Guidelines and Procedures 1. All judges scores and decisions are final. If a parent wishes to view his/her student s individual tryout documents, the parent must make an appointment with the officiating administrator within one week of tryout date. Parents are allowed to view only their student s individual documents. 2. All selected candidates and their parents will be required to sign a program contract. 3. Two mascot positions are available. PARTICIPATION AND EXPECTATIONS FOR MEMBERS Section A Participation 1. All members are required to attend assigned camp and all precamp/summer activities. 2. Members must attend all practices and performances scheduled by the coach. ALL members or their parent/guardian must make verifiable contact with the coach BEFORE being absent from a performance and/or practice. Any member absent from a practice or performance requires coach approval PRIOR to the function. 3. If a doctor s note is excusing a student from participating, then a doctor s release must be given to the coach to reinstate the student to participate. Notes supplied by the parent are only to document absences, not to excuse them. 4. Any member who has missed practice and/or not participated for non-school related reasons/activities may be eliminated from all performances for that specific week at the coach s discretion. 5. Members are required to be present at least 50% during the school day to be eligible to participate in any practice or function on the same day. Excused absences must be approved by coach ahead of time. Section B Expectations 1. As a member of the cheer organization program, the student has made a commitment to make cheerleading a priority. Outside activities, including work, will NOT constitute a reason for being absent from, arriving tardy to, or leaving early from cheer organization activities. When there is a conflict with another activity on campus, the coaches/teachers will work together to resolve the conflict. 4
5 2. Members are required to be punctual to performances, wear the correct uniform (head to toe), and be ready to participate. 3. University Interscholastic League attendance guidelines will be followed. 4. A member must demonstrate responsible leadership and model appropriate behavior at all times. 5. Members must promote and maintain good relationships with faculty, administration, and the student body, and work cooperatively with other campus organizations. 6. All members must follow the rules and regulations of the EISD Student Code of Conduct and the Cheer Organization Guidelines. 7. Any member suspended from a particular game performance or school function for reasons other than academic suspension must remain dressed out and present at all functions. He/she must continue to practice and uphold all cheer organization responsibilities. 8. Members will be expected to cheer at basketball games, perform in the spring show, and other school functions including, but not limited to baseball/softball games, etc. 9. All electronic devices including cell phones, and any additional listening devices are prohibited during cheerleading practices, fundraising events, scheduled school time, and during any games or school events. In case of an emergency, parents will need to contact the cheer coach in charge or any EHS administrator. 10. Summer camps/practices: Summer camps and practices are required for all squad members. Varsity will travel to and attend a camp in June Junior Varsity will attend a local camp. Practices and preparation days will be 3-4 days a week (Monday through Thursday) in June and August. 11. Any parent/guardian concerns will be expressed directly to the coach. The discussion will not take place directly before, during, or after practices/games/performances. Proper procedure is to call or the coach to schedule a meeting. Addressing a cheer member directly will not be tolerated. GRADES AND GRADING 1. EISD grading guidelines will be followed and enforced. 2. UIL eligibility guidelines will be met. LETTER JACKETS A student must be a varsity cheer member for the entire school year to receive a letter in the cheer program. 5
6 UNIFORMS 1. Each member must ensure that his/her uniform is clean, in good condition, and fits properly for each performance. 2. Members may not wear any jewelry while in uniform, practicing, or performing. This includes belly button rings, tongue jewelry, and any other type of body piercing. Bandage coverings or any other objects (spacer/retainer) inserted in the pierced area will not be permitted. 3. Members nails can be no longer than the tips of their fingers. Colored nail polish is prohibited. 4. Uniforms will be worn by cheer organization members only. TRANSPORTATION 1. Transportation to away games will be provided by the school district. All members must provide their own transportation to home games. 2. Members are required to ride to and from games/functions/activities in school district transportation. Prior documentation, authorizing alternate transportation, needs to be approved by cheer coach. Only in extreme circumstances will a member be allowed to use alternate transportation. FINANCES/FUNDRAISING 1. Cheer organization membership requires that students meet various financial obligations. Costs associated with uniforms, competitions, performances, camp, and travel may be substantial. While fund-raising serves to minimize the direct cost to participants, students will also have out-of-pocket expenses. 2. If a cheerleader resigns or is dismissed from the squad, he/she is still responsible for meeting accumulated financial obligations. 3. Members are required to fulfill his/her financial requirements by the set deadlines. DEMERITS, DISMISSAL, AND RESIGNATION Demerit points are administered by the coach and accumulate from tryout date to tryout date. A member who receives three demerit points will be dismissed from the organization for the remainder of the school year, and also becomes ineligible to tryout the following school year. 6
7 Section A Discipline 1. The cheer coach will use EISD Cheerleading Incident Form (see attached) for examples of, but not limited to, incidents that require discipline. 2. The cheer coach will develop and enforce standards of behavior that are higher than the district-developed Student Code of Conduct in all settings, including but not limited to social media and may condition membership or participation in the activity on adherence to those standards. 3. Conduct that is negative, rude or disrespectful toward the coach and/or the cheer organization will result in disciplinary action that may include removal. Negative conduct including but not limited to alcohol, drugs, and/or inappropriate use of social media that negatively portrays the member, the organization, any individual/group, or EISD may result in immediate removal. Section B Dismissal/Resignation Dismissal involves a loss of membership from the organization. Resignation is a choice made by the individual member that he/she no longer desires to participate in the organization. 1. Once a member has been dismissed or resigns, he/she loses all privileges/recognition (including but not limited to letter jackets/team awards) as a member of the organization for the duration of the school year. 2. Any member dismissed/resigned of his/her position in the cheer organization must fulfill all financial obligations for non-returnable/nonrefundable merchandise and return all school-owned items. 3. A member who resigns or is dismissed from the program is not eligible to tryout the following school year. 4. The coach reserves the right to decide, on a case-by-case basis, the consequence(s) for actions of a member who has not upheld his/her obligations to the cheer organization. Consequences may include correction, demerits or removal. 7
8 Elgin Independent School District Cheer Organization Guidelines Acknowledgement I have been provided a copy of the EISD Cheer Guidelines. I understand and consent to the rules, responsibilities, and standards of conduct. I agree to adhere to all of these rules and regulations. I also understand that noncompliance to these rules and regulations will result in disciplinary action and possible removal from the cheer organization. I understand the term of service for an EHS cheerleader is tryout date to tryout date of the next school year. I understand participation in the cheer organization is a privilege, not a right. This privilege carries with it responsibilities to the school, organization, the student body, and the community. Violations of the Student Code of Conduct may warrant dismissal from the squad.
