1 SINS December 2017 Congratulations to Torquay Boys Grammar School, who shone at the British Schools Score Championships on 14 th October at Rother Valley Country Park, coming first in both the Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary Boys competitions. Also at the British Schools Championships on 19 th November at New Beechenhurst West, coming third overall in the Large Secondary School, winning the Boy Years 7, 9, 10 and 12. Congratulations to the SW Junior Squad who came 4 th overall at the JIRCs, a result with which they are very pleased. Out of the 12 Squads who competed, the boys came 2 nd and the girls 5 th. Congratulations to the group who went to the Slovak TrailO Weekend on 28/29 October. In the PreO event at Castra, Tom Dobra UBOC came 5 th and John Kewley MDOC came 6 th. In the FootO Sprint Relay race (in which we had three teams) one of our teams came 2 nd. Good news on the coaching front there are enough candidates to commence the UKCC Level 2 Coaching Course; details below. SWOA has its next committee meeting on Wednesday 7 th March 2018, in Taunton. 2 Courses UKCC Level 2 Coaching Course to be held in SW BOK will be running a Level 2 Orienteering Coaching Course. Applications are particularly welcome from members of SW clubs. Event Safety Workshop Organised by WSX / WIM Saturday 09 December 2017 at Avon Heath Country Park The flyer is on the SWOA website under Latest News Colour Coded Awards To qualify you must be within the first 50% of all starters or within 1½ times the winner s time in the results on the same colour course, 3 times in any 2 years. For WHITE courses you only need to complete the course 3 times. STRING COURSE (PURPLE) is for any young person who does not already hold any other colour award, and who has completed 3 string courses. To obtain a colour coded badge award please let me have the 3 dates on which you qualified (anywhere in Britain). Badges cost 1.50 for Juniors (20 & under) or 2.50 for Seniors (21 & over) please note the change in price, as SWOA has ordered some new badges (these prices are subsidised by SWOA). 3 SWOA News Notes from the committee meeting held on 29 th November Fixtures: at the moment, there will not be a SW Sprint Championships this year as there are no daytime sprint events scheduled at which these could be held. Controllers: four new appointments were confirmed; Carol Iddles BOK and Rob Parkinson DEVON as Grade C; Roger Crickmore WSX and Richard Sansbury QO as Grade B. Congratulations to all of them. Job vacancies: there are several areas where help is needed. Administrator for the South West Junior Squad The South West Junior Squad (SWJS) requires administration help to assist the deputy manager Pete Maliphant. This would suit one person or could be shared. The work includes booking accommodation, getting permissions, arranging parent helpers, cooks etc, sending out details to those who have registered an interest and collecting the contributions made by the juniors. SWOA Secretary Katy Dyer the present incumbent is standing down at the next AGM in September Please contact Katy on family.dyer@blueyonder.co.uk for further information. SWOA committee members We also welcome new blood on the SWOA committee. We meet about five times a year, plus the AGM which is usually held after Day 1 of the Caddihoe. Association Coaching Representative We are looking for a Licensed Coach to take over from Christine Vince as Association Coaching Representative. This person would take a pro-active role in the support, training and continuing personal development of all coaches in the region. The Chairman s Challenge needs a new Scorer Gavin Clegg has stood down after four years, and we need someone to take over in time for the Summer Relay Series in There is a full job description in the October and November editions of SINS. 4 Wild Boar in the Forest of Dean The number of wild boar in the Forest of Dean has been rising steadily over the last decade and, given the number of orienteering events in the Forest, the chance of an orienteer seeing some of these animals is becoming increasing likely. Simon St Leger-Harris and Chris Johnson BOK have kindly provided a link to a very informative article published by the Forestry Commission the link is here: It is worth reading the paragraph on Behaviour of Feral Wild Boar, but it is all interesting. JK 2021 JK 2021 is coming to the SW in less than four years time! It is being staged down in Cornwall, and we are fortunate that we have already found the planners for all four days. Peter will take up his post on 1 st February 2018, and until then Mike will continue to work part-time.
