Our goal is to make a positive impact on the behavior, academic achievement, and social development of our students. Our educational program provides a meaningful well-rounded experience for all children. The Juanamaria teachers and staff are professional people who are proud to work at a California Distinguished School. They are willing to give their time and talents to educate our students. We all will continue to work with children in such a way to guide them to their maximum academic, social, and emotional development. We welcome you, the parents and students of Juanamaria, into a partnership with the staff dedicated to excellence, commitment, and pride. We have Guidelines for Success that we use daily through our pledge which states the behaviors we expect to see demonstrated in the Juanamaria community. The pledge is: I will have a positive attitude. I will expect success and come prepared to learn. I will accept responsibility for my choices and actions. I will respect myself and others. I will think before acting and always do my personal best

2 Page 2 Note from Nicole Hofferbert PTA President First and foremost, THANK YOU!!! Thank you for ALL the support we received during Sportathon. We exceeded our goal of $30,000.00, so it rained popsicles on the whole school. With the money that was raised, the PTA will be able to provide many more enrichment opportunities for the students at Juanamaria such as, PE once a week from Pacific Camps for grades 2-5, 8 art lessons per grade level with Mrs. Stein, Kindergarten food science, 3rd grade gardening, 5th grade outdoor education, 1st grade wildlife education, field trips for all grades and much more. ALL students that donated any amount of money to Sportathon were able to duct tape Mrs. Wolowicz to the ball wall. After 400+ pieces of duct tape, Mrs. Wolowicz was stuck to the wall and as a finale, Marina Wolowicz put a plate full of whipped cream in her face. Each student that brought in $50.00 or more was able to attend a special prize assembly. For every $50 they donated, they received a raffle ticket. The students were able to choose which prize box they wanted to put their raffle tickets in. We had four grand prizes to give away, 1. 4 tickets to Disneyland, 2. An electric razor scooter, 3. an ipad mini, 4. a $100 Visa gift card. Once we had 4 grand prize winners, we mixed up all the remaining tickets and pulled winners for more prizes. There were, 4 tickets to Sea World, 2 tickets to the Aquarium of the Pacific, 3 month membership to the YMCA, tickets to the Skirball museum, tickets to the Natural History Museum, a pass to Gull Wings Museum, tickets to the Nutcracker ballet, a trip to the islands from Island Packers, 5 one day passes to the Ventura Aquatics Center, 5 passes to MB2 Raceway, 13 passes to Skating Plus, 8 passes to Golf n Stuff and everyone who attended the assembly walked out with a 2 for 1 pass to Golf n Stuff and a free yogurt parfait from McDonalds. Everyone left a winner. We had 40 students that donated $250 or more and they were invited to a special lunch time pizza party with Mrs. Wolowicz and Splash on the cafeteria stage. They listened to music, had their picture taken with Splash and Mrs. Wolowicz and ate veggies, fruit and cheese or pepperoni pizza for lunch. We had 10 VIP students this year that brought in donations from $325 to $1200. Our TOP earner this year was Liam Besand with over $ in donations. This was definitely a team effort and we want to thank each of you for all your hard work. 3 Juanamaria Elementary Newsletter Page 3 Sport-A-Thon This year's Sport-a-thon was a huge success! Students were challenged with new fitness goals and asked to complete a super fitness circuit. They had 15 minutes to count how many circuit laps they could complete while superhero music blasted for motivation. Many students completed more than 6 and some up to 10 laps, an impressive physical achievement! Even Mrs. Wolowicz got in on the fun and went through the spider crawl. Thank you to all the volunteers that cheered for our super students and facilitated the event. It was great to see moms, dads, and grandparents encouraging the students. Your participation kept the event running smoothly and the enthusiasm high. Way to go Dolphins!! Jennifer Easter, Sport-a-thon Chairperson

Don t forget you get a $1.00 savings on all spirit wear! It isn t too late if you want to sign up and earn a Legoland ticket, Aquarium of the Pacific ticket, and more. Contact Katie Pearson, VP Membership. Box Tops Box Tops can always be sent in with your child, they take them on their library day. Let s see if we can surpass last year when we collected over $1,100 worth of funds for the library. Thank you! So many Juanamaria families are saving their Box Tops. We just trimmed and bundled over $750 worth for our school! Woo hoo! Shoparoo Have you checked out Shoparoo yet!? It is a FREE APP that helps raise money for Juanamaria. The ONLY thing you have to do is scan receipts. It is super fun, check it out! Kindergarten Food Science Food Science started in Kindergarten. The first food they explored with all five senses was strawberries. The kids loved that their focus letter of the week was S as in Strawberry. Thanks to Anne Wittlin and Katie Pearson for heading up this program for the Kindergarteners. School Cents Juanamaria is lucky to be one of only 20 schools participating in the School Cents program. All receipts from Pacific View Mall (and surrounding shops) between Sep. 1 and April 30 earn points. Every school earns money in the end from $250 to $3000! 6 Page 6 Halloween Guidelines and Information 10/31/2014 Friday, October 31 we will have our costume parade for the students at 8:30 AM on the upper grade playground. Children may wear costumes to school for the parade. Costumes should be worn over the child s clothing and should be appropriate. Please do not allow your child to wear or bring any of the following (children will be asked to take off any costume that portrays violence): No weapons of any kind (not even fake ones) No violent character costumes or masks No fake blood If your child brings a mask, they need to wear it ONLY during the parade. Please send a paper bag with your child so they can put their costume in it after the parade. The cafeteria will be open and available to children who are not to take part in the parade. Please join us if you can! Message from Lynn Bova, Cross Country! We have an incredible group of athletes who joined our Juanamaria Cross Country Team! We currently have 48 students on our team and they are doing a great job representing Juanamaria. In our first timed competition, our athletes took second place in both boys and girls elementary races. They ran approximately one mile of flat and hilly terrain at Arroyo Verde Park. Our team is made up of 4th and 5th grade students who practice during regularly scheduled PE time, and they compete against 6 other elementary schools at approximately 5 meets. Please come cheer us on at Arroyo Verde Park. We have a meet on Oct. 30 and Nov. 4. Girls run at 3:30 and boys at 3:45. Run, Dolphins, Run!

7 Page 7 Juanamaria s Boutique Juanamaria's Boutique will be November 15th from 8 am to 1 pm. Come get all your holiday shopping done in one stop. If you or someone you know is interested in a table for just a 20% donation, fill out the form coming home this week. Deadline for school community sign up is this Friday! Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco and drug prevention awareness campaign observed annually in the United States. Monday: Turn Your Back to Drugs. Wear your shirt backwards. Tuesday: Hats Off To Drugs! Wear a crazy hat or crazy hair. Wednesday: Sock It To Drugs! Wear crazy socks. Thursday Say YES to sports! Wear a sports jersey or uniform! Friday: Happy Halloween! (Halloween guidelines on page 6) From Jill Tauber, ink recycling Please bring in your old printer cartridges and cell phones for recycling! Laser and ink jet cartridges, used or new, and any old cell phone will do! Just drop them off in the office and we take care of the rest. Juanamaria gets money back for the recycling, so you will be doing something good for the school, as well as the environment! We collect them all school year long, so keep them coming!! Little League! Sign ups for Little League baseball have now started. Now, Juanamaria students are eligible to play at Ventura Coastal Little League.
