Mr.Schrader s Article Of The Week I just finished watching our Battle of the Books competition. Students had a list of books to read over a period of several weeks, then we had a trivia contest to determine which team would be the champion. I was very impressed by the number of students who took the time to read the books in preparation for this event. Reading is a crucial skill for all of us. It is also a skill that we need all of our students to work on. We need all our parents and guardians to help us out, as we strive to become a Distinguished school. Last year s K-PREP results showed that 57.6% of our middle school students were reading at the Proficient or Distinguished level. We had 20.4% of our students who were reading at the Novice level. We want all of students to be successful in whatever they choose to do. We know that the ability to read well is the key to help them achieve their goals. Our brain is like a muscle. If you exercise your brain, it gets stronger by growing new neural connections. On the flip side, if you don t exercise your brain, significant growth will not take place. When we read, we are exposed to new ideas; reading develops the imagination, and we discover new things. There are countless other positive benefits to reading. Our children today have a great number of distractions in their lives, as we all do. Cell phones, tablets, video games, Netflix, Snapchat, Instagram and tons of other things tie up countless hours. Please take time to encourage your child to devote more time to reading. Please have them read for at least 30 minutes a day. You can even join them! Reading is fun and it is the key to young people becoming the thinkers, problem solvers and leaders we need them to be. Thanks for your help in this effort.
Student Articles Of The Week Candy Grams and FCA! By: Jocelynn Magan One thing happening at OCMS is the Beta Club selling Candy Grams! They will be sold before school, at all lunches, and at break every Tuesday and Thursday, January 23- February 8. They will be delivered on February 10th during ninth period! Be sure to get your Candy Grams at the bargain price of $1!! Another happen' thing at OCMS is FCA!! Each Wednesday at 7:30 a.m., stop by the Media Center to fill up on food and faith!!! At FCA, donuts, milk, and orange juice are served to those who come. While you're there, be sure to listen to the prayers and talk on God and our Savior, Jesus Christ! FCA is a great way to catch up with God and be a part of a tight-knit group of amazing, faithful people!! See you there! These are just a few things going on at OCMS!! Man, we're busy!! :)) Sports! By: Kelsey Kennedy Something that is happening right now is something that happens all the time: Sports. First off are the sports occurring in the winter. Basketball is a big winter sport and is in full swing for the boys, considering it s tournament time. This Saturday is one of their tournament games and hopefully, they will win and carry on all the way to victory. The games are at Edmonson County; so if you have the chance to come and watch, please do. In addition to the basketball team, the bowling team, wrestling team, and swim team are all having a good year, as well. For those of you who don't know, this is the OCMS first time to have a bowling team. It's pretty awesome that new sports are being introduced, which allows students to have more opportunities. Lots of students are now preparing for spring sports. The majority of the spring sports are high school teams that our middle schoolers participate in. Right now, baseball, softball, and track are all conditioning. It's not too late to start up with the team to help you prepare for tryouts. On the other hand, girls volleyball is a middle school team. Tryouts are already finished, and now practices have begun. Their first game is scheduled in the first week of February; they would love to see you there. There are lots of chances to come support the Eagles, whether it's in a winter or spring sport!! District Governor s Cup By: Becca Zamora This past Saturday, the OCMS Academic Team went to Grayson County Middle School to compete in their District Governor's Cup. I, a part of the Academic team, had tons of fun. We did many different events: Written Assessment, Written Composition and Quick Recall. Written Assessment involves taking a written test over a subject area, such as Language Arts, Arts and Humanities, Math, Science, or Social Studies. Written Competition involves writing an ondemand piece in a 90-minute time frame. Then there is Quick Recall, which consists of two 12- minute halves with four people on each side, trying to answer questions in a five- second time frame. We competed in all 3 events. When we competed in these events, we placed several times. Unfortunately, we didn't place in Quick Recall, but we were very close. 4 points to be exact. We did place in all written assessment categories and written composition. Bryce Shirley placed 4th in Social Studies, Landon Littleton placed 2nd in Math, Courtney Winkle placed 5th in Science, Alexandria Schneider placed 3rd in Arts and Humanities, Keenan Baggerly placed 2nd in Language Arts, Emily Sisk placed 4th in Language Arts and 1st in Written Composition, Taylor Dayman placed 4th in Written Composition and I, Becca Zamora, placed 3rd in Language Arts. Overall, OCMS placed 2 nd out of the 4 teams. All of the people listed above will advance to the regional competition taking place in February at Daviess County Middle School. We all are looking forward to regionals and we all hope to advance to the state competition.
Congratulations to the following winners of the Battle of the Books competition: 7th grade first place team The Book Beaters - Tyler Johnson 7th grade second place team The Three Musketeers - Abraham Garcia, Makenzie Rhy & Halle Lamb 8th grade first place team Infinity Squad - Samantha Burden, Becca Zamora & Danielle Darragh 8th grade second place team Emo Potatoes - Alexis Shephard, Mollie Shephard & Jessica Padgett Both teams will receive an offcampus lunch and the 1 st place teams were rewarded with an OC Yeti Cup full of Candy!
CONGRATS!!! District academic team competition On Saturday, the Academic team went to Grayson County for their district competition!

The art students have created pieces that are on display at Mammoth Cave. We encourage you to support our students by visiting the exhibit to see their amazing work! Also, congratulate Grayson Cole and Becca Zamora on their Gold Key Awarded Art Pieces in the Scholastic Art Contest. Their work will be on display at SKY-Pac in Bowling Green. These two artists will have their pieces move on to the NATIONAL Scholastic Art Competition! Great Job!
