1 High Expectations High Achievement 3rd November 2017 McDonnell Creek State School 1 CELEBRATING LEARNING WITH EVERY CHILD EVERY DAY! Dear parents and families, Principal: Sandra Bulger Phone: Thanks so very much for contributing to our Book Fair. We have made over $750, so that is a truly remarkable achievement for a small school. These sales entitle the school to 20% off any books we also buy and I can assure you all that I will be investing money into our literacy program to ensure all children remain enthusiastic about reading. At present all children are having their mid term reading and spelling assessments and their results are showing continual personal improvement. 2 McDonnell Creek State School Newsletter 2 Reefed up REEFED UP by Anneliese Ronlund At Mc Donnell Creek State School we had Reefed Up come to perform for us. They acted like many sea creatures like sharks; dolphins; manta rays; sea anemones; mermaids; spiked star fish; and a clown fish. They did acts that we got to join in with and it was really fun and exciting with the costumes, dance routines and the lovely music. There was one shark that acted like she was blind so she nearly ran into us. She was on a roller chair so she could control where she went. The two manta rays danced in black and white costumes, they did the tango together. The dolphin they had was all tangled in bottles, plastic bags and had swallowed some plastic that made her feel sick. Dolphins are lovely and I think we need to stop polluting the oceans and killing the sea creatures. That is why we don t leave things on the ground or chuck things in water because when it rains it washes into the ocean from our drains and rivers. Some animals think they are jelly fish and eat it or it will float over their heads and suffocate them and if that keeps happening there will be no fish or turtles or lovely coral to look at when snorkelling. People like to snorkel and come from all over the world to see the Great Barrier Reef. If you do pollute and use plastics that are non-biodegradable, you have to remember that you are being selfish. Anyway, let s get back to Reefed Up. The spiked star fish chased the coral in our playground, it made the whole class laugh. By the way, did you know that sea anemones don t like cow poo? The actors all were getting dressed up as different animals for all the different songs and we were dressed up too because we were dressed in our favourite book character as part of our Book Fair week. They said that our school we were the best crowd they had ever had. At the end we had to name a fish that we knew. I said parrot fish. The other fish that I can name are barramundi, clown fish, angle fish and many more too. It was the best show that I had seen all year, but it had to end so I was sad. Reefed Up By Tahj Dellow Hi. On October the 25 th of October a performance called Reefed Up came to our school to show us a musical drama performance about the Great Barrier Reef and what happens to the Reef when we put rubbish into the reef. The rubbish causes pollution and the coral is being bleached. The fish that live in the anemone go somewhere and can t survive when the coral dies because they need each other to live healthily. I am not sure, but I think when bleaching happens they were used to the normal temperature of the water and if the water temperature rises a few degrees for long periods of time the environment and the animals suffer and die. The best thing I liked about Reefed Up was the music that they danced to. There was star wars music and there was Happy by Will Pharrell. I don t know the rest of the songs, but they were all good to listen to. I also liked learning about the reef and other stuff like how much rubbish we toss into the reef. There is a great big rubbish cluster of plastics in the ocean that just swirls around and kills animals that eat it. It also looks ugly and I don t want the oceans to look like that. I learnt that clown fish have a slimy mucus around them when they are out of water. It protects their body from the sun like a natural sun burn cream and also from the anemone which is poisonous to other creatures. They also dressed up as many different sea creatures, there were two manta rays and there was an anemone, a shark and a Crown of Thorns starfish, plus Dolphins and a Mermaid. We also got up and went around the playground and back to the stage in a circle dance with the performance presenters. When we sat back down and my favourite song in the Reefed Up performance came on, HAPPY!!!!! Yey, we even clapped to the beat it was amazing.

4 4 McDonnell Creek State School Newsletter Book Fair Character Dress Up Day Great day everyone, thanks for supporting your children to get into the spirit of things. It really livens up participation and school engagement, if occasionally we do some fun and morale building group events. The children love to see the adults also enjoying themselves and it is also amazing how it opens up discussion relating to characters, books, story writing etc. All great stuff!!!!
5 McDonnell Creek State School Newsletter 5 Golf Afternoon There will be a letter coming home regarding the Golf afternoon with Anton. The children will be bussed to the Gordonvale Golf Course for a lovely afternoon of golf, following the actual golf circuit. This will be a great culminating activity for the lessons we have been having for all students over the last 10 weeks. We ask that parents please pick up from the Golf Course after the session finishes at 3.00pm. MONDAY 13th NOVEMBER 1pm - 3pm P&C meeting The next P&C meeting will be held on Monday 13th November commencing at 8.15 am. Discussions relating to P&C sausage sizzle at the pool; possible cake/sausage sizzle for election polling booth and how's the raffle going. Also needing to be discussed is the Christmas in Babinda December 2nd doughnut staff, and the possibility of holding a Dan Murphies sausage sizzle. We are presented now with quite a few opportunities to rally together for fund raising with different events within our local community. Please consider helping. Remembrance day Parade and Gordonvale Remembrance Day Parade At school we will hold a simple Remembrance Day Parade on the 9th November At Gordonvale a community Remembrance Day Parade is planned for the 11th November
