1 CLOVERPATCH BUZZ-Z NEWS 4-H is a communi ty of young people across Americ a who are learning l eaders hip, ci tiz enship and li fe s ki ll s. Activity Night contest will be held at Southside Middle School on Monday, April 18th, beginning at 6:00 pm. No pre-registration is required for this contest. TREE Identification A total of 20 trees will be identified. A study book is available at the County Extension Office. A CD study guide is available, bring a blank CD to the Ext. Office to trade. FASHION REVUE The Fashion Revue contest will be held at Sulphur Rock School Cafetorium on Thursday March 10th, beginning at 6:30 pm. Pre-registration deadline is Wednesday, March 9 entries after that will have a 5 point penalty. 4-H ers will start out by presenting a short, 1 to 2 minute commentary. It should include information on cost, fabric, care and why the garment was chosen. 4-H ers will be using a microphone and should speak without notes. After the presentation, 4-H ers will informally model the garment. Contestants will be judged on: CONSTRUCTED or PURCHASED SEED Identification 4-H ers will identify a variety of common seeds. If you would like to come into the Extension Office to study the seeds, you can. Just call and set up a time. Ornamental Horticulture Identification 4-H ers will identify common ornamental horticulture plants. Garden flowers, foliage plants, landscape plants, and trees could be included for identification. ENTOMOLOGY Collection boxes need to be turned in April 7th before 4:30 pm. These will be judged before April 18th. Your collection will be available to pick up at Activity Night. Information on how to create a collection box is at the Extension Office. DIVISION and CATEGORIES Knowledge of fabric characteristics, uses and care. Constructed Purchased Ability to evaluate garment quality and apply knowledge, Casual or Dressy Casual or Dressy Appearance, fit and fashion ability. Dresses that are more than a hand above the knee with be disqualified. You may get more details at the Extension Office. NO formal dress allowed. Pre-registration is necessary. When you call, let us know which category you will enter. Contestants may have one entry in Constructed and one entry in Purchased. LAST ACTIVITY of this 4-H Year! DAIRY FOODS CONTEST Participants must be 4th 12 grade. This contest will consist of two categories: PARTY IDEAS MAIN DISH You may only enter one category. Bring one copy of your recipe, and the dish prepared by the 4-H er. All of these must be addressed: use of milk and dairy foods, originality of recipe, clearness and accuracy of recipe, availability of ingredients and original ideas for serving. You may pick up a complete list of rules at the Extension Office. Dairy dishes will not be accepted after 6:30pm. 2 June 7-9th The Arkansas Teen Leader Conference is a three-day conference for 4-H members ages Each year the conference focuses on a specific topic and helps to prepare teens for leadership responsibilities in their local clubs and counties. Deadline to register for the TEEN LEADER CONFERENCE via 4honline.com will be April 27th. The total cost of TLC is $180. The 4-H Foundation will pay one half the cost or $ Those that have applied for Teen Star or Ambassador should attend if possible. Payment is due on April 27th at the Extension Office. Registration will not be approved at county level until payment is received. St. Louis Summer Camp August 8-10th, 2016 A $70.00 deposit needs to be made by April 29th. Names will not be added to the list unless a deposit has been made. Cost is $250. If you did 4 of the 7 activities $62.50 off, if you turned a record book off. If you did both you will receive half off or $ Balance due June1st. When the bus is filled we will begin a waiting list for those that want to go. There are 54 seats available on the bus. If someone backs out we will go to the top of the waiting list. Activities planned for St. Louis St. Louis Cardinals Game / Science Museum St. Louis Zoo / City Museum / Fitz s Rootbeer Six Flags / Purina Farms Camp Counselor Applications are available on 4HOnline until April 1. Anyone wanting to be considered for Camp Counselor needs to apply even if they have been a counselor in the past. Applicants must be 14 by June 16. Counselor training is June 3-4th. Ross Photography Contest The Ross Foundation 4-H Photography contest provides an opportunity for Arkansas 4-H ers to demonstrate, compete and exhibit their photography skills. All 4-H member ages 9-19 are eligible to compete. Photos are due in the Ext Off by April 29th. Color Living / Color Non-Living Black & White Living / Black & White Non-Living. Guidelines: All scenes or subjects must be in Arkansas. Only one version of each photo can be entered. The photo must be taken during the current contest year. An 8x10 is required for judging - (negative or computer disk containing image MUST accompany photograph). Use of photo editing is limited to darkroom techniques. Cooking Club: Kids in the Kitchen Competition The Cooking Club will be having a cooking competition for the next 3 months. March 29th Appetizers May 24th Desserts April 26th Main Dishes If you are a member of the Cooking Club you must call the Extension Office and let us know that you plan to attend each of the above dates. If you would like to join the Cooking Club please call either Julian or Linda to determine what level of Cooking you are at. May the contest begin. POSTER ART Contest Posters 14 x 22 should be submitted flat, no hard posters, to the Extension Office by April 21th. Theme for 2016 is I Am...4-H or open theme years old can compete. For more information review last months newsletter or call the Extension Office for rules. TEEN LEADER CLUB FUN ACTIVITY Friday April 11th at 4:00pm Extension Office Activity to be announced on remind 101 SEWING CLUB MARCH 8th 4:15 Extension Office The Sewing Club will be making quilt blocks to make individual quilts. If you are interested in joining the Sewing Club, we have sewing machines, material and supplies. So come on out and join the fun. Page 2

3 STATE SPRING LIVESTOCK SHOW Little Rock The State Spring Livestock Show will be April 28th 30th, at the State Fairgrounds in Little Rock. Registration forms will be on the State Fair Website ( and only on-line forms will be accepted. Online registration deadline is midnight April 15th. No late entries will be accepted. Check the state fair website far full spring show information. $800 CATTLEMEN S SCHOLARSHIP Applications are due April 1st for the Independence/Jackson Cattlemen s scholarship. For more information, contact the Extension Office. B-Day competitions: BB Shooting Bicycle Safety Bait casting Broiler Barbecue Monday, April 4th Independence County Fair Grounds 4:00pm 6:30pm Bring your own bike or borrow someone's at B-Day. BB guns for BB Shooting and fishing poles for Bait casting will be furnished so you will NOT be allowed to bring your own. Pre-register for the Broiler Barbecue by Friday, March 1 st by calling the Extension Office. Only those registering will have a chicken to barbecue. Remember no self-starting charcoal is permitted. If you need information about the Broiler Barbecuing, contact Pumpkin & Watermelon Contest Deadline to request seeds is March 30th at the Extension Office. Camp Leadership - Advanced for 4-Hers years of age, registration is open until April 1. This workshop is April 22-23rd. There is a $95 fee for the workshop. PAPER CLOVER Tractor Supply Co. Tractor Supply in Independence County with the help of 4-H clubs that participated in the Paper Clover Campaign was award the CLASS CHAMPION AWARD. This award is given to any TSC store that achieves a 20% transaction rate. Independence County 4-H received $428. Let s get ready for the Spring Promotion on April 13th 24th. Clubs mark your calendars! Club Leaders PROJECT BOOKS: if any of your 4-Hers need a project book please make a list and send to me and I will work on pulling them for you. CLUB OFFICERS: If you have not sent in your list of club officers please do immediately. That information has to be entered into 4-H Online.
