TROY HIGH SCHOOL WARRIOR WEEKLY August 17, 2018 Happy New Year and welcome back to Troy! For students, teachers, and I suspect many parents this is the real beginning of the year, not January 1 st. I hope summertime afforded everyone the opportunity to unwind, think, rest, and relax. What that looked like on an individual basis I am sure varied greatly, from travelling the globe, Troy Tech internships, working on the house, shopping, hiking the local mountains, going to the beach, or staying at home and doing whatever The school year is here and the Class of 2022 has crossed the threshold into the Troy family. In the photo below, students line up to obtain their schedule on the first day of class. It made for a very busy time period between 6:30 8:00am! Thank you to all of our parent volunteers and staff members that helped with the schedule distribution! I
think I have a couple of ideas that I will float by our Guidance department to make this run 75% more efficiently next year. Over the summer many of our students were exceptionally busy doing things directly related to school. For student in Troy Tech and part of the class of 2019, they were completing their Internships. Almost 400 students worked 150 hours or more in an internship that for most follows one of their Troy Tech pathways, or has some connection to their pathway. For students involved in Cyber Security it seems like there were things going on all the time. They held their annual Cyber Security Summer Camp, and yesterday there were more than 300 students that attended a Troy Cyber introduction meeting during lunch in the Lecture Hall! Our Science Department, led by several teachers / coaches from our 2018 Science Olympiad National Championship team held a one week Science Experience Camp for 6 th to incoming 9 th graders. The camp was well attended, with the students participating in project based learning and having a great time! It is also a fabulous tool to demonstrate to potential students the kind of projects and application of their knowledge they can experience as Troy students. Always a good thing! All of our athletic teams, as well as Cheer, Band, Dance, and ASB had summer camps in which they honed their skills, learned new ones, and prepared for the school year. For these groups, summertime is always a reboot. Take a little time off and then in a much more relaxed time period without having to divert attention to academic classes, they are able to set the groundwork for the upcoming season. Everyone will be looking forward to see what our teams do this year!
NJROTC seem like they barely slowed down over the summer with students engaged in academic competitions will into June. One of the competition teams went on some wonderful tours of Washington D.C. and the Naval Academy. With their tour guide, Commander Lauper they had access to places few ever obtain. Here is a picture of our NJROTC and Fullerton High School s JROTC with the Secretary of the Navy in his office, inside the Pentagon! Troy s administration was also busy during the summer and one of the most important things we achieved was hiring new staff members to replace those that retired or moved to different schools over the summer. We have added all of the following people to the Troy family, which include a new Speech & Language Therapist, multiple Teachers, School Psychologist, School Resource Officer, Assistant Principal, and Classroom Aides. There were many outstanding applicants, and we only took the best of the best! I am excited about our new family members and I think their students will also be very well served! When you have the chance, pleas welcome our new Warriors! Lauren Allinson, Bettina Delis, Monique Lenero, Catherine Nguyen, Ruth Ng, Arati Clarke, Andre Gonzalez, James Gugliemana, Josh Lomelli, Jill Davis, and Travis Kowalec.
Unfortunately, or possibly fortunately, I currently have a picture of only one new staff member. Pictured above is our new School Resource Officer, Travis Kowalec on his first day of school at Troy. He is excited and ready to go, and his boss, Sgt. Jon Radus packed his lunch for him. Never a team to take too much time off, several current member of our two time 2 nd in State and CIF championship team played a practice round with 2017 State Individual Champion, Troy alum, and current Virginia Cavalier, Ms. Beth Lillie. They played their practice round at
this little place called Hacienda last Thursday. I have heard it is a somewhat challenging course. I sure they all played very well. Go Warriors! It is difficult to convey the depth of feeling or loss felt by our Troy family regarding the passing of Mrs. Dorey Madrid on July 15 th. During the course of her twenty four year teaching career at Troy High School, she inspired thousands of students both inside and outside of the classroom. Incredibly smart, Mrs. Madrid also possessed a magnetic personality and sense of humor that could draw anyone into her world. Mrs. Madrid was very popular with students, staff, and parents and that never changed. Over four years ago, after she was diagnosed with Stage four cancer she vowed to fight with everything she had, and during the battle, won over an entire legion of people both inside and outside of Troy. Throughout her very public battle with cancer Dorey Madrid spread a message of love and hope, for her husband and children, but also for her Troy family, her St. Jude family, the vast network of people who were inspired by her battle against this terrible disease. Ultimately, Mrs. Dorey Madrid was very much more than
someone who fought valiantly against cancer. Tomorrow on August 18 th at 3:00pm, a Celebration of Life A Celebration of Dorey Madrid, will be held in the newly renovated South Gym at Troy High School. There will be photos, guest speakers, a slideshow, art, and music that together will weave the story of the life of Mrs. Dorey Madrid. Last night our Troy Warrior football team played their first game of the year against powerhouse team, Fountain Valley High School. Our team led by their coach Mike Echaves went behind 7-0 in the 1 st quarter, but then rallied and took an 8-7 lead! They extended their lead to 15-7 still in the 1 st, but then Fountain Valley scored two times and took the lead all still in the 1 st quarter. In the end we would score two more times but it would not enough to overcome their 40 points and the final score was I will say, our team is good and they are going to be a force in our Freeway League and in the several non-league games before we start league. Congratulations to our football team, Cheer, and Band for being part of the game. Additionally, thank you to all the parents and friends that made the trip to Huntington Beach on a Thursday night to see a football game! It is much appreciated by our kids.
That is it for the first Warrior Weekly of the school year! Welcome, and let s have a fantastic school year! Have a wonderful weekend and get some rest and relaxation to make up for getting back into the routine of school. I will see everyone back here on Monday morning! But before you start the weekend, enjoy some of my summertime history through pictures with my wife s dog, Luna. She might be my dog too. W.V. Mynster
