1 WINDERMERE CARE CENTRE 900 WEST 12TH AVE VANCOUVER BC V5Z 1N ST. PATRICK S DAY FACTS AND LEGENDS P A G E 2 Do the Irish wear green on St Patrick Day? St. Patrick's revelers thought wearing green made one invisible to leprechauns, fairy creatures who would pinch anyone they could see (anyone not wearing green). People began pinching those who didn't wear green as a reminder that leprechauns would sneak up and pinch green-abstainers. Mar 17, 2010 What color do the Irish wear on St Patrick Day? Originally, the original color of St. Patrick's Day was blue. But for several reasons, green prevailed. Ireland is often referred to as the Emerald Isle, and its flag displays a green stripe. Irish Catholics typically wear green (Irish Protestants typically wear orange, the other prominent color on the Irish flag).mar 17, 2016 What color did St Patrick wear? In British usage, it refers to a sky blue used by the Order of St. Patrick, whereas in Irish usage it is often a dark, rich blue. While green is now the usual national colour of Ireland, St. Patrick's blue is still the official colour of state. How did St Patrick's die? On this day in 461 A.D., Saint Patrick, Christian missionary, bishop and apostle of Ireland, dies at Saul, Downpatrick, Ireland. Much of what is known about Patrick's legendary life comes from the Confessio, a book he wrote during his last years. Do Irish people have blue eyes? More than half the population of Ireland have blue eyes, according to a new study. That figure is higher than any other country on the Irish and British isles. The research was carried out by ScotlandsDNA and also revealed that blue is the most common eye colour on the two islands. Who drove all the snakes out of Ireland? Patrick banishes all snakes from Ireland. The absence of snakes in Ireland gave rise to the legend that they had all been banished by Saint Patrick chasing them into the sea after they attacked him during a 40-day fast he was undertaking on top of a hill.

3 RECIPE OF THE MONTH SHAMROCK COOKIES Ingredients 2 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature 2/3 cup sugar 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 cups all-purpose flour Fine green sprinkles How to Make It P A G E 5 Step 1 Preheat oven to 325. Combine butter, sugar, vanilla and salt, and beat with electric mixer on medium until blended. Add flour; mix on low until incorporated. Shape dough into a disk and wrap in wax paper. Step 2 Halve dough. Roll to 1/4 inch thick and cut out shamrock shapes; save scraps. Repeat. Step 3 Place cookies on two parchment-paper-lined baking sheets. Bake for 20 minutes until lightly golden. Remove; top with sprinkles. Transfer to cooling rack CHAPLAIN S CORNER P A G E 6 The Winter Olympics in South Korea recently completed has reminded me of an event from a previous Special Olympics that speaks in a powerful way to our support and care for each other as residents, their families, volunteers, and staff. At the Seattle Special Olympics in 1984, nine contestants, all with physical or mental disabilities, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash. At the gun they all started out not exactly in a flash, but with a relish to run the race to the finish and win. All, that is, except one little boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over, and began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back, every one of them. One girl with Down Syndrome bent down and kissed him, and said, This will make it better. Then all nine linked arms and walk together to the finish line. Everyone in the stadium stood and cheered; the cheering went on for several minutes. People who were there are still telling the story. Why? Because deep down we know this one thing: What matters in life is more than winning for ourselves. What matters in this life is helping others win even if it means slowing down and changing our own course to do so. May we be more and more mindful to help others win, whatever their challenges are, even choosing to slow down and change our own course if we need to. Chaplain Ken
