1 RPAC CONTRACT AND AUDITION INFORMATION Thank you for joining us to continue a great tradition of Music and Theater at our Summer Theater Academy at the Richland Performing Arts Center! Attached you will find information about the staff s expectations and selections for your audition. As well as gaining theatrical experience during this production, you will also learn to work as part of a team, develop your social awareness, leadership skills and produce a product we can all be proud of! 2 ABOUT THE SHOW Roald Dahl's timeless story of the world-famous candy man and his quest to find an heir is a golden ticket to adventure. The delicious adventures experienced by Charlie Bucket on his visit to Willy Wonka's mysterious chocolate factory light up the stage in this captivating adaptation of Roald Dahl's fantastical tale. Featuring the enchanting songs from the 1971 film starring Gene Wilder in addition to a host of fun new songs, Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka JR. is a scrumdidilyumptious musical guaranteed to delight everyone's sweet tooth. Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka JR. follows enigmatic candy manufacturer Willy Wonka as he stages a contest by hiding golden tickets in five of his scrumptious candy bars. Whomever comes up with these tickets will win a free tour of the Wonka factory, as well as a lifetime supply of candy. Four of the five winning children are insufferable brats, but the fifth is a likable young lad named Charlie Bucket, who takes the tour in the company of his equally amiable grandfather. The children must learn to follow Mr. Wonka's rules in the factory or suffer the consequences. EXPECTATIONS Rehearsals are 9-5 on normal camp days (Monday - Friday). Please have students here and ready to start at 9! Shoes - Close Heeled/Toed - no flip flops! No dresses - wear clothes you can move and dance in! Bring script, 2 pencils and a water bottle. Lunch is at approximately 12 noon. Students MAY NOT leave school campus for lunch at any time! No food besides water in theater! A lack of professionalism can and will cause an actor to lose his/her role. Professionalism means being on time, not disrupting rehearsal, following instructions, being a leader through example, and being a team player. Doctor excused illness or family emergencies are the only accepted excuses from camp. After 1 excused absence, an actor will lose his/her role due to the short duration of our camp. No unexcused absences. Mr. Easler - beasler@richlandsd.com if you have to miss camp for any reason! Once you arrive at rehearsal you are not allowed to leave the rehearsal at any time until dismissal of a scheduled rehearsal or performance by one of the directors. There will be no leaving of the campus during rehearsal! All rehearsals are closed to everyone except for the cast and crew. No parents should be in the theater to pick up students or to watch rehearsal. 3 AUDITION REQUIREMENTS Auditions will take place after lunch on the first day of camp. All roles are extremely important for the success of the show! The auditions will take place in groups and there will be three components of the audition: Dance: Ms. Houck will teach the dance selection during the morning of the first day of camp. Students will be evaluated in four categories: Physical Potential, Musicality/Rhythm, Recall of Movement Sequences (Combinations), Stage Presence & Discipline. Music: Ms. Williams will review the selected music during the morning of the first day of camp. The selections for male and female singers will be posted on the web site on Parent Night. Students will be evaluated in four categories: Projection, Interpretation, Charisma/Presence, Diction. Acting: Audition sides are attached. Students should familiarize themselves with the different scenes. Students are not required to memorize but should be as familiar as possible with the excerpts. Students may be asked to read as any character. Students will be evaluated in four categories: Tone Quality, Rhythm, Intonation, Confidence. 3

8 SIDE (Excerpt) 1 I don't understand ACTING AUDITION This was a test of character, Charlie. I carefully selected rooms that would tempt each of our Golden Ticket winners. You, Charlie, did something quite remarkable. You gave in to temptation, you were smart enough not to get caught and yet you admitted your guilt. But the other kids They'll be fine and they'll each receive the booby prize a lifetime supply of chocolate. GRANDPA JOE That's the booby prize? What's the real prize? Charlie, do you love my factory? It's the most wonderful place in the whole world! I'm pleased to hear you say that, Charlie, because from this moment on, it's yours! What do you mean? I'm giving you my factory, Charlie. I need an heir, and that person is you! You want me to run this entire factory? What about my Mom and Dad and Grandpa Joe and The entire family can live here I'd love to I'd positively love to! ( and hug. gestures for 'S Golden Ticket to light.) 8

9 SIDE 2 Too late! AUGUSTUS (slurping wildly) GRANDPA JOE Great, he's gonna give his cold to millions of people! (VIOLET defiantly blows a bubble behind 'S back.) AUGUSTUS It's so good! I think I've had too much chocolate. Ah... Ah... Ah... CHOOO!!! (AUGUSTUS falls into the smelting pot, head first. His legs kick once, then twice, then he freezes a la magic shell.) Augustus! Augustus! The chocolate's frozen, like magic shell! He looks like an Easter Bunny! KIDS MIKE VIOLET (An OOMPA-LOOMPA enters.) We've had an early revelation and lost a child in the chocolate smelter. It's a shame! the boy really seemed to know about food. Alas, take Mrs. Gloop's Poop to the strawberry dipping room and heat him to precisely 102 degrees Fahrenheit... or is that Celsius?... no, Fahrenheit? Yes degrees Fahrenheit! but no higher or he may spontaneously boil and that would be a tragedy. Because Augustus vould be damaged? MRS. GLOOP My dear, Augustus was damaged long ago the tragedy would be the wasted chocolate! Goodbye Mrs. Gloop, and good luck. ( gestures and AUGUSTUS' Golden Ticket lightbox dims.)
