6 Dear 4-Hers and Parents, We are looking forward to an exciting year, with new comers and experienced members! Each year we encourage 4-Hers to participate in various contests to help them make their best better. Getting involved in these activities will help them gain experience and learn new skills, while building confidence. We hope this member yearbook will help keep everyone informed of the contests and guidelines. If you have any questions, please call the UT Extension office at We will be glad to help any way we can. 7 Club Officer Duties President: Announce each meeting 3 days ahead of time Encourage members to participate in contest Make sure other officers are prepared Have the classroom ready before meeting Vice President: Remind members of the contest for the month & encourage them to participate Select members of the club to lead the American Pledge, 4-H Pledge, and Thought for the Day Preside if the president is absent Secretary: Keep a permanent record of the meeting by: o Taking notes during the meeting and writing a story telling what happened Read the minutes from the previous meeting Call roll and keep attendance Activities Leader: Make a list of everyone participating in monthly contest Assist the 4-H agent

8 Demonstration Contest April 4 th Grade Explorer Your demonstration should be 3 to 5 minutes in length and generally show how to do something related to a 4-H project area. 5-12th Grade Demonstration Your demonstration should be 3 to 5 minutes in length and generally show how to do something related to a 4-H project area. Projects include: Beef Citizenship Clothing & Textiles Communications Companion Animal Computers & Technology Consumer Ed/Economics Dairy Electric Engineering/Safety Sci. Entomology (Insects) Food Science Forestry, Wildlife & Fisheries Goat Horse Horticulture/Garden Leadership/Personal Development Line & Design Nutrition, Health & Fitness Performing Arts/ Recreation Photography Plant Science Poultry Sheep Swine Veterinary Science

9 Photo Search Contest March The 4-H Photo Search is an activity designed to give young people an opportunity to learn more about themselves and their surroundings through photography. Rules: 1. Each entry will consist of a print (no larger than 5X7). 2. The photo should be mounted on an 8x10 piece of construction paper. 3. On the back of the paper: Name Grade 4. The photo can be in color or black and white. The photo can also be taken with a digital camera. Use your imagination when taking and selecting photos. People don t always have to be saying cheese and posing for the picture. They can be hugging, making a face, etc. Experiment with different angles. Choose a subject and focus in on it. Make sure you are close enough to make a sharp clear picture. Holding the camera steady is important too. If the camera moves just a little while you are taking the picture it could make it blurry.

10 4-H Camp Scholarships Each year we offer partial scholarships to 4-H Summer Camp to assist members financially so they are able to attend camp. In order to be eligible for these scholarships 4-H members must be active in the 4-H program throughout the year. This is as simple as entering club contests each month. You don t have to win, just participate and try your best. If you would like to attend 4-H Camp this summer with a scholarship, try your best to participate in as many of the monthly contests as possible! To help you keep track, we have included the Record Keeping page. In the spring we will pass out applications for camp scholarships in the club meetings. Make sure you get one, fill it out and include the contests you have participated in then turn it in to the 4-H office by the deadline. We hope you will be an active 4-H member this school year and we look forward to having you join us at 4-H Camp next summer!

11 Use It Again Piggy Banks October Contest Saving money is a habit you need to start early. The earlier you learn to save, the more money you will have all your life! Putting your money in a bank will help you even more. Instead of spending money to buy one, take a look around the house and make one. Rules: Recycle something around the house Example: a milk jug, oatmeal tube, and more It must be less than 12 x 12 inches (That means no taller or wider than a ruler) Be Creative and have fun! Put your name and grade on the bank

12 Clover Bowl Contest March Rules and Regulations Clover Bowl helps 4-H members learn about 4-H, Tennessee history, Agriculture, and Family Consumer Science. RULES: Each member will receive a copy of the Clover Bowl Handbook which contains all rules as well as a list of all possible contest questions. Divisions 4 th Grade 5 th Grade 6 th Grade 7-8 th Grade Contests In the club, at the county and regional contests, we will have a quiz session to test your knowledge level. On the classroom and county level each participant competes to earn points to qualify for the next level. The top four Clover Bowl winners from each grade will be selected to represent Van Buren County in the regional contest working together as a team!

13 Bread Baking Contest February Bring your favorite dessert to enter RULES: 1. Do not use ready to use mixes (store bought mixes). 2. Must have a copy of your recipe to enter the contest. 3. Write your name name on the bottom of your container. 4. Select three (3) of your best products that all look similar. Or bring the whole cake or pie. 5. Bring your product to your club meeting and register with your club activities leader.

14 4-H Public Speaking Contest November It is time to practice your public speaking skills. In preparing a speech, keep three basic steps in mind: 1. Plan Decide on the topic of your speech. 2. Organize Decide what you would like to say in your speech. Write it down on 3X5 cards, or on notebook paper. You may want to make an outline for your speech, using three parts: A). Introduction B). Body C). Conclusion 3. Practice You should practice your speech several times just like you plan to do it in front of your audience. Practice using your note cards while standing up. You may want to practice in front of your parents, or in front of a mirror. Deciding on a topic is often the hardest part of giving a speech. Always remember that your topic should be something that you feel comfortable talking about. Guidelines: 4 th Grade: 2-3 minutes on any topic 5-12th Grade: 3-5 minutes on any topic Club winners will be invited to the county contest to compete on their grade level.

15 4-H Poster Contest January Show off your creativity by entering the 4-H Poster Contest! Your poster must be about 4-H. Choose a catchy slogan or idea, such as: 4-H Building Blocks for Life 4-H is the Ladder to Success 4-H is on the Right Track Make your artwork relate to your slogan. You may use drawings, paintings, cutouts, etc. Rules: 1. Must include the 4-H Clover somewhere on the poster. (Do not cover with anything, must be upright) 2. Posters must be 14 x 22 inches. This is ½ of a sheet of poster board. 3. Objects may not extend over 1/8 inch from the poster. Meaning, nothing can stick out more than a flat nickel. 4. No copyrighted items like Sponge Bob, Brats, or Hannah Montana. Someone else created it, and it s against the law to use it. 5. Posters must be HORIZONTAL! 6. On the back of your poster, be sure to write: your name and grade. HORIZONTAL (4-H Poster Must go this way) not this way

16 Chick Chain January Students will take & raise 12 or 25 baby chicks Then in the fall, they will bring 3-5 back to the county show and sale. They will be judged and sold to the highest bidder to buy next years chicks! We do ask for a deposit, which will be returned when you bring your chickens to the show/sale!
