2 SROM 40/40 Curriculum 1 I. Course Information Prerequisites: None Total Hours: 1008 field hours; credit hours in a specific are to be determined Catalogue Description: The 40-Day, 40-Night Wilderness Leadership Course is an expedition in learning and application. Students travel on foot a total of 160 miles, participating in rock climbing, backpacking & mountaineering, as well as developing a greater relationship with Jesus Christ, leadership ability and learning outdoor skills to accompany the experiential curriculum. II. Course Description The purpose of the 40-Day, 40-Night Wilderness Leadership Course is to launch persons into their callings of ministry, leadership and personal aspirations. It equips students with wilderness skills: rock climbing, mountaineering, backpacking, backcountry cooking, navigation, and fishing. Our classroom is the backcountry of Wyoming, including Vedauwoo rock formations, the Snowy Range, and the Wind River Wilderness. Students arrive two days before the course begins. Over those two days they will learn the fundamentals of pre-course planning, equipment, and packing. Under the supervision of their instructors, students will prepare their food and equipment rations for the next 40 days. The first 10 days of the course are spent developing rock climbing and backpacking skills in Vedauwoo, Wyoming. The next 30 days are spent developing, refining and executing wilderness skills. Students will progress from introductory techniques and knowledge to advance techniques. Day 30 and 31 are spent on solo where students will have the opportunity hear God s voice. The course culminates in 7 days of student led travel where participants will apply all skills acquired over the previous 33 days. Upon return, students spend 2 days de-issuing, debriefing, and transitioning back to civilization. Student will leave the 40-day, 40-Night Wilderness Leadership Course having gained essential wilderness hard skills, developed and practiced Christ-like leadership, learned how to be an effective team member and communicator, and having had the opportunity to be spiritually transformed by growing in revelation of Jesus Christ. III. Goals 1. Growing in their relationship and revelation of Jesus Christ 2. Learning through outdoor skills how to become a Christ-like leader 3. Teach student to be an effective team member and communicator 4. Teach students outdoor education and wilderness adventure skills IV.
