Gokyo Lakes, Everest Base Camp Trek and Island Peak Climb This trek combines three of the most fantastic locations and experiences in the Sagarmatha National Park and Mount Everest region. You get to trek and explore the beautiful Gokyo Lakes area just north of Namche Bazaar. This is followed by a high-pass trek over to the Khumbu Valley where you follow the Khumbu Glacier up to Mount Everest Base Camp and the spectacular Himalayan vista point of Kala Pattar. The challenging highlight of the trek is the ascent to the 6,189m summit of Island Peak where you get to experience the exhilaration of standing on top of one of the greatest trek-climb mountains in the Himalaya Mountains. When you are ready you will be collected from your hotel lobby and driven to our Thamel office where you will be formally introduced to your Trekking Guide. We will go through all your trek itinerary and arrangements with you an assurance every detail is in place. We will also ask for your passport photographs and any other details so that we can organize any permits required for your trek and the region you will be exploring. Day 2: Some Sightseeing in and Around Kathmandu After breakfast we will collect you from your hotel and escort you on a tour around the cultural highlights of fascinating Kathmandu. We will arrange a guide of your chosen language for your tour. Kathmandu is a busy city with a rich cultural heritage arising from the mix of religions and peoples of many ethnic origins that make up the city something of a harmonious cultural melting pot. No introduction to the rich culture of Nepal and Kathmandu would be complete without a visit to the Monkey temple Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath and Kathmandu Durbar square. Durbar Square: The next stop today is the beautiful Kathmandu Durbar Square, or the royal palace square of the ancient Malla kings of the Kathmandu Valley. This square and all its architectural treasures are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While some damage to buildings occurred in the 2015 earthquake the site still contains many stunning architectural gems. The original royal palace courtyards are open to visitors and you will marvel at the intricate timber carving and beautifully crafted brickwork of the palace. The open square outside the palace has many beautiful multi-storey pagodas and temples with ornate carving and carpentry artwork that tells some of the story of the ancient kings and their mystical time and beliefs. The square also contains many important Hindu temples and statues such as to Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Durbar Square also contains the unique and intriguing Kumari Chok. This is an ancient and ornate house where resides the Raj Kumari the Living Goddess. She is a young girl chosen through an ancient and mystical selection process to become the human incarnation of the Hindu mother goddess, Durga. If you are in the courtyard of the home at the right time in the afternoon you may see a brief glimpse of the Goddess at her window. Swayambhunath: You will first visit the Swayambhunath temple complex that sits atop a high hill overlooking Kathmandu and the entire Kathmandu Valley. Swayambhunath is perhaps the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage site in Nepal. It consists of a very large white stupa with the all-seeing-eye of Lord Buddha plus many small stupa and beautifully carved stone shrines. This is a wonderful place to catch your breath and start to understand and appreciate the deep importance of Buddhist belief to the people of Nepal and the Himalaya region. Make sure you ring the many bells to awaken the gods and let them know you are in Nepal. Take the time to enjoy the view over Kathmandu and have your guide point the many other highlights of the city. In the far distance to the east you may also be able to see the hills of Nagarkot where your hotel for tonight is located. If you feel energetic you might also like to try some or all of the 350 steps that lead all the way from Kathmandu city up to your Swayambhunath temple vantage point. 2
Pashupatinath: Hindu Temple is a very large and complex and focal point for the Hindu religion. This old and very revered complex of buildings and shrines is dedicated to the Lord Shiva, one of the main deities of Hinduism. While Lord Shiva has multiple forms he is often seen as the destroyer. This has great significance for the Pashupatinath temple as it is the site of many Hindi ritual cremations each day. Pashupatinath is considered by Hindus to be an auspicious site for passing from one stage of life to the next through the purifying and destroying flames of cremation. However, on a happier note, visitors may also get to see the temple in a buoyant festival mode with one of the many Hindu festivals celebrated here through the year. Day 3: Flight Kathmandu to Lukla and commence Trek to Phakding We will transfer you from your hotel to the domestic airport to catch the very scenic flight to Lukla, just south of the entrance to the Sagarmartha National Park and the Mount Everest region. The flight is brief and takes only about thirty minutes to complete. Once in Lukla and all your packs and equipment are organized you will start your trek with the walk northwards along the Dudh Kosi River valley to the village of Phakdings and its impressive suspension bridge over the river far below. At this stage the scenery is a well vegetated and impressively large river valley with glimpses to the north of the towering snow-capped Himalayan peaks that await you. Day 4: Trek from Phakding up to Namche Bazaar The first stage of the walk takes you across the river and to the village of Monjo and the actual entrance to the Sagarmatha National Park. Your guide will handle all the formalities of ensuring you are carrying the necessary permit to enter the national park. All necessary permits will have been arranged for you following your visit to our head office a day or two earlier. The second stage takes you upwards from 3,440m altitude Namche Bazaar so a very substantial altitude gain of over 1,600m is achieved in this stage so just take it slow and steady up the many steps to Namche Bazaar and enjoy the scenery and beautiful mountain summit vistas deeper in the national park. Day 5: Acclimatisation in and around Namche Bazaar Since view will now be at quite a significant altitude you must let your physiology adapt the thinner atmosphere and reduced oxygen levels. This is an essential step in the proper management of the risk of altitude sickness. Your guide will personally instruct you on what to do during the day and how best to acclimatize and how to identify any early symptoms of altitude sickness. There is plenty to see and do in Namche Bazaar itself and in the immediate surrounding area. So taking a rest day can be an interesting and fun day too. Talk with your guide about visiting places such as the famous Edmond Hillary School established to assist the Sherpa community and residents of the region. Or perhaps pay a visit to the beautiful Everest View Hotel the view of the Mount Everest summit can be inspiring for the next days of your trek. Day 6: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Khumjung to Dole Today we will take a day hike through the village Khumjung. We start with a steep one-hour climb to the Shyangboche airstrip (3790m), from where we will slowly ascent towards Khumjung passing numerous chorten (stone Buddhist monuments) the largest village in Khumbu, at the foot of the sacred peak Khumbila. From Khumjung we can enjoy views of Mt Everest.Soon after leaving Khumjung the trail climbs to a large chorten on top of a ridge. This ridge descends from Khumbila, a 5734m peak, said to be the abode of the patron God of the Khumbu region. The trail descends slightly towards the Sanasa and then trail ascends up to Mongla 3
(4000m.). From here, you can see panoramic views of various mountains. You trek steeply descend passing through Phortse Tenga and from there, the trail climbs steeply to Dole, through rhododendron and birch forest festooned with hanging mosses and lichens. You can enjoy delicious meal at Phortse Tenga (3650m). Day 7: Trek from Dole to Machhermo It takes about five hours. From Dole you climb steadily along the side of the valley, where the small and thorny bushes give way to scrub juniper as the altitude increases. The trail passes many summer settlements, which are used when yaks are taken to these pastures to graze in the summer months. Ahead of you are excellent views of Cho Oyu, while back down the valley are the peaks of Kantega and Thamserku. Day 8: Trek Machhermo to Gokyo Village Today you climb steadily along the valley of the Dudh Kosi River coming out above the tree line now the vegetation adapting to the altitude itself is more scrub and low juniper bushes. You will pass through several summer pastures used by yak herders. As you make your way up to Gokyo your views of Cho Oyo ahead improve but the immediate local scenery is very pretty across the valley, looking up you will see evidence of Glacial lakes and very colourful valley sides. Behind you are views of Kantega and Thamserku. Passing the dramatic Machermo (4410m) Valley and on to the small settlement of Panka. Eventually you find yourself walking close to the banks of the river and climbing to the top of a small ridge which then leads you into the first lake. You soon arrive at the larger, second lake and not far is the third on the banks of which is Gokyo. The scenery here is magnificent with the mountain scenery reflected in the emerald green water. Day 9: Acclimatisation A good day trip today is to head out to the 4th (2 hours, one way) and 5th lakes, both following the valley floor or climbing to the ridge above the glacier on the right hand side make great routes. Day 10: Ascend from Gokyo village up to Gokyo Ri vantage point and trek back to Thangna Today trek from Gokyo lake the trail bit ascends then after trail smoothly up and down in glacier after that about forty five minutes smoothly descends along the valley to reach at Thangana (4700m) known as base camp of Cho La Pass. Along the trail you will see the fine views of mountains and natural beauty. It is really wonderful trip from Gokyo Lake to Thangna but in Thangna only basic and limited teahouse facilities are available in here. Day 11: Challenging trek from Thangna to Dzonglha via the high Cho La Pass Today is going to be one of the tough days, the pass is not itself difficult but it is steep and involves a glacier traverse on the eastern side. We need to be careful as the trail is vertical and the rocks glazed by ice add trouble to the trekkers making the trekking trail slippery. Our trail climbs through a narrow valley and a rocky trail we climb up continuously up from Phedi. As we gain height, the view gets increasingly captivating before us. We trek through the side of a frozen lake while we come to the top of the Cho La pass (5368m) decorated with prayer flags. Famous mountains we get sight of during the trail on the Pass and from the top are Kyajo Ri, Tengkangpoche, Numbur, Kangchung etc. The pyramidal Ama Dablam presides over a range of mountains on the south even as Cholatse soar on the west and Lobuche East and Baruntse rises sharply to our right. After the Cho La pass, the trail descends steeply towards the Dzonglha (4,830 m) passing through some crevasses and pine forests before we reach at Dzongla, another beautiful place with a complete view of Mt. Cholatse, Mt. Ama Dablam, Lobuche and the Pheriche village far below. Finally you reach at Dzongla (4830m) here are few basic teahouse facilities. Day 12: Trek along the Khumbu Glacier from Dzonglha to Lobuche Today you don t have to walk longer and also not hard trail from Dzongla to Lobuche so you can enjoy the trip after crossing the Cho La Pass (5368m). The trail is descends and ascends gently and level walk finally you reach at Lobuche (4910m). This trip is providing excellent views of Ama Dablam, the Nuptse-Lhotse, Everest, Pumori, Lobuche peak etc. Lobuche is a small village 4
situated nearby the stream and the sunset on Nuptse is a memorable sight. Day 13: Trek from Lobuche to Gorakshep then up to Everest Base Camp Your trail will take you along the western edge of the Khumbu Glacier initially to the small settlement of Gorakshep. This is a very well appointed location with accommodation and all the facilities a trekker may need. A quick tea stop might be useful before pushing on to the goal of this trek Mount Everest Base Camp. The walk continues northward along the edge of the glacier before arriving at the shattered jumble of ice and snow that is the main camp site for expedition parties attempting to summit Mount Everest. However, it depends on the month you visit as to whether expedition parties will be encamped. There are short seasonal windows before and after the annual monsoon when the ascent of Mount Everest is potentially possible. But once you arrive at base camp the presence or absence of expeditions is immaterial just take in the awe of Mount Everest, the Khumbu Icefall and the many 7,000m plus peaks jutting towards the sky in every direction you look. This is the power of nature at its most impressive. You will complete the day be returning to your accommodation for the night at Gorakshep. Day 14: Ascend to the mountain vista point of Kala Pattar then return to Lobuche Sunrise from the top of Kala Patthar is just a spectacular sight you will always remember and no doubt record in many photos. But the walk up to the vantage point at 5,545m altitude is steep and a challenge, often requiring a slow two hour walk. At the top, 5,545m, you have just 52% of sea level oxygen available to you, so some exertion is required. But the rewards for this effort are beyond words all of the most beautiful and inspiring Himalayan peaks and rugged icy landscapes are laid out before you as you are left speechless by the power and beauty of the west face of Mount Everest, its neighboring peaks of Nuptse and Lhotse and the nearby summits of Ama Dablam, Thamserku and more peaks than you can count. Kala Patthar is the Himalayan vista high point, literally, of any Everest Base Camp trek. Day 15: Descend along the Khumbu Glacier from Lobuche to Kongma La and then to Chukkung This day our trail continuously goes through high alpine region. We can see the panoramic view of Nuptse, Lobuche, Pumori, and Cholatse. On the way we have to passes through small village, which offer the beautiful view of Mountains. On the way we can also see monuments of climbers, who gave their life while trekking around in this region. Day 16: Side trek trail from Chhukung to the Island Peak Base Camp Trek from Dingboche to Island Peak Base Camp (5050m) & on the way we can see the panoramic view of Nuptse, Lobuche, Pumori, Cholatse. Day 17: Ascend from Island Peak Base Camp to Island Peak High Camp Finnaly, the Climbing day day for Island Peak Day 18: Climbing day ascend to the summit of Island Peak and then trek back to Chhukung Early in the morning will have to climb the rock gully. This is not difficult but there are several short rock steps to climb before you emerge on the right side of the gully. The route then follows a ridgeline, which leads to an exhilarating and exposed traverse onto the snout of the summit glacier. You will need to rope up for the glacier as it contains several crevasses but it leads without difficulty, to a 100m(330ft) snow and ice slope (40-45º) on which the guides will fix a rope. From the top of this slope, 3 rope lengths along a sharp summit ridge lead to the top. After enjoying the summit views you will descend all the way to Chhukung for overnight. 5
Day 19: Descend from Chhukung to Tengboche From Chhukung we descend the valley of the Imja Khola, trek to Pangboche through the potatoes fields, down alpine pastures. The Pangboche Gompa (monastery) is the oldest in the Khumbu and once used to boast the skull and hand of a Yeti, (stolen in 1991).Leaving Pangboche the route descends past some magnificently carved mani stones to the Imja Khola, which we cross via a steel suspension bridge high above the river at a spot where it rushes through a narrow cleft. From there we have a gentle climb to the tiny village of Deboche past mani walls deep in a rhododendron forest. From Deboche we have a short steep climb to Tengboche through a forest of birches conifers and rhododendrons. A visit to the monastery is a must. The singular beauty of Ama Dablam, standing isolated from all other mountains provides a spectacular backdrop and reminder of the height of Himalayan peaks. Day 20: Trek from Tengboche down to Namche Bazaar From Tengboche the trail drops sharply down to the Dudh Koshi River and the village of Phunki, where we cross the river, and up toward Namche Bazaar, winding high above the river with views north towards Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse. Day 21: Last day of walking. Rapid descent to lower altitude trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla Today involves a four hour walk as you descend rapidly from Namche Bazaar and head for Phakding. Depending on your group and the weather conditions you may spend the night in Phakding or continue on to Lukla. Since this evening will be the last on your trek it will be time for some celebrations with your guide and fellow trekkers. A few drinks, some music and some Sherpa and Nepali dancing is often on the menu. So please celebrate your achievements and friendships of this trekking experience. Day 22: Short flight from Lukla to back Kathmandu Your flight from Lukla will depart early in the morning and we will soon have you back in your Kathmandu hotel. Day 23: Free day of your own Enjoy a day exploring some of the quieter streets of Kathmandu and stocking up on souvenirs and presents for friends and family.
