Methods of installation of ADSS fiber optic cables
Two main methods recommended by the cable manufacturers: A. Mobile Cable Reel method generally recommended for span < 50 m B. Static Cable Reel method generally recommended for span > 50 m
A- Mobile Cable Reel method General sketch: Methods of installation of ADSS cables The cable reel is placed on a truck platform or on a trailer. The cable is anchored on the first pole of the aerial line, then immediately placed on the next pole support following the line route.
A- Mobile Cable Reel method - Step 1 1- Installation of anchoring clamp on the first pole 2- Fastening of the underground-aerial transition cable along the pole with downlead clamps 3- Cable reel carrier moves to the next pole
A- Mobile Cable Reel method - Step 2 1- Taking care of the minimum bending of the cable, lift the cable up and install the cable fitting, either two anchoring clamps or one suspension clamp. In case of suspension, put the cable into a support such as the clamp body or a sheave, to enable the cable free slide during sag adjustment. When the next anchoring clamp is installed, all the previous suspension clamps can be finally locked on the cable. 2- Cable reel moves to the next pole
A- Mobile Cable Reel method Advantages : This method enables a quick installation with a limited strength force on the cable. It is possible to adjust the sag on a line section between two anchoring clamps with no need to unwind the complete cable length available on the reel. Inconvenients : Practically, this method is usable mainly on the road side of the pole, only in the absence of tall obstacle between the road and the poles, such as trees, other poles, building and in the absence of other drop cable.
B- Static Cable Reel method General sketch: Methods of installation of ADSS cables Large diameter sheave to be used for the first and the last pole of a line section, and for route angle poles Junction between the ADSS cable and the pulling rope Static cable reel with brake controller Small diameter sheave for alignment / suspension poles Pulling rope Pulling winch with strength force controller Junction ADSS-pulling rope: 2 pulling socks + 1 swivel
B- Static Cable Reel method The ADSS cable is pulled on an aerial line section using a pulling rope linked to the cable and previously put on sheaves at every pole. Close to the first pole of the line section, the reel of ADSS cable is positioned at a static place on a rolling support equipped with on a brake control system to keep the cable tensioned during pulling. The ADSS cable is reeled off by the upper part of the reel. The stringing needs to be managed by an operator to avoid that the cable drops on the ground between poles. A strength load control device shall be used on the pulling line in order to control the maximum load applied on the ADSS cable during the process. The pulling of the cable is done by a static winch positioned at the other extremity of the line. If necessary, the last dead end pole shall be temporary reinforced by a guywire. According to the total length involved and the weight of the ADSS cable, the pulling can eventually be done manually. The cable is then fastened on the poles starting with the anchoring clamps to adjust and balance the sags, then suspension clamps are finally locked.
B- Static Cable Reel method Step 1 1- Positioning of the ADSS cable reel carrier 2- Installation of large diameter sheaves at the extremities of the line section and route angle poles 3- Installation of small diameter sheaves for alignement/suspension poles 4- Positioning of rope pulling winch Note: Pole hardware and brackets for anchoring and suspension clamps can be installed at this stage to be used as a support for the pulleys.
B- Static Cable Reel method Step 2 1- Positioning of the pulling rope into sheaves. 2- Junction between the pulling line and ADSS using two pulling socks and one swivel Carrier of ADSS reel Pulling rope is reeled off from the winch
B- Static Cable Reel method Step 3 Cable reel rotation slightly braked to keep the pulling rope and the ADSS cable tensioned The winch pulls the rope at a low speed (30m/mn) with control of the maximum pulling strength force Pulling process coordinated by radio Note : On route angle poles, sheaves with a large diameter must preferably have the capability to self-level to keep the ADSS cable into the sheave groove. If not, it is necessary to install straps or other devices in order to tilt up the sheaves.
B- Static Cable Reel method Step 4 1- Installation of ADSS anchoring clamps with adjustment of cable sags, and removal of «large diameter» sheaves. 2- Installation of ADSS suspension clamp and removal of small diameter sheaves. 3- Removal of the junction between ADSS and pulling rope
Fixing of pulleys on poles Shackle or hook to fix a pulley Temporary bracket, with strap ratched tightened small diameter (140 mm) sheave for alignment / suspension pole large diameter (600 mm) sheave for line section extremities poles and route angle poles. Light weight model in composite material for self leveling on route angle.
Tensioning tools for cable sag adjustment 1. The cable is pulled with the tensioner to get the needed cable sag 2. The pulling force is controlled with the dynamometer 3. Anchoring clamp are installed and fitted to the pole bracket / hardware 4. Release of the tensioner load and removal of the tools Temporary anchoring device (pulling grip sock, anchoring clamp) according to the recommandations of the cable manufacturer Tensioner Dynamometer Sling
