Altitude 5,400m (17,717ft) / 21 Days / Grade T3 INTRODUCTION The Dhaulagiri Circuit is a rugged trek to the west of the Annapurnas, starting from Pokhara and following the Myagdi Khola to its source at the Chhonbardan Glacier below the world's seventh highest mountain. From Dhaulagiri Base Camp at the foot of the north face, you trek up the side of the glacier and over the French Col to enter "Hidden Valley". This is an extremely remote hanging valley, the crossing of which gives this trek more of an expedition feel. From the Hidden Valley there is an option to climb the nontechical Dhampus Peak (6,060m). Under normal conditions the standard route follows moderate snow slopes to the summit and can be attempted by those with ice axe and crampon experience. You then make a steep descent to Jomsom, where you will meet trekkers who have descended from the Thorong La on the Annapurna Circuit. Rather than trekking back to Pokhara via the Kaligandaki Valley, which has been subject to major road-building in recent years, you fly from here back to Kathmandu. If you wish to discuss any aspect of the trek or your suitability for it, please contact us by telephone: +44 (0) Alternatively, please us via our website: By joining us on this classic trek, you are joining a company with its roots well and truly planted in mountaineering. Your trek leader will be carefully selected for their previous 1

high-altitude mountaineering and trekking experience, to ensure that you have a high level of support on the trip.» This trek is best described as an expedition and as a company specialising in high-altitude climbing and trekking, we are well-placed to deliver a high-quality trip.» The trek is led by a highly experienced Jagged Globe leader. They are supported by a Nepalese Sirdar who knows the trek well, plus porters. Pem Chirri, who has been the Sirdar on most of our previous treks, is highly-skilled and a member of our high-altitude Sherpa team, working on Everest during the spring season.» There is an optional ascent of Dhampus Peak 6,060m (additional fee required), suitable for those with previous ice axe and crampon experience.» Our itinerary and acclimatisation schedule is carefully designed based on our experience on this route since It includes days spent at Italian Base Camp (3,600m) and Dhaulagiri Base Camp (4,600m), prior to crossing French Col.» You can join a pre-trip training weekend. You'll meet other team members, find out more about altitude issues and get out for some big walks in the Peak District. You can also purchase specialist gear from the Jagged Globe shop.» You can also take advantage of our comprehensive equipment hire service. You'll be well equipped without making expensive purchases.» The hotel we stay at before and after the trek, The Summit in Kathmandu, is an oasis. Our teams always really appreciate it! 3 You fly into Kathmandu and have the afternoon to explore the city. Your leader will have flown the day before to make arrangements for the Dhamphus Peak permit. On day 3 you fly to Pokhara and stay overnight in a nice lodge. From here you drive to Darbang to start the trek (you'll fly back at the end from Jomsom). On the first three days of the trek you walk to the south of the Dhaulagiri Massif, first along the Kali Gandaki and after that through the Myagdi Khola valley. Temperatures can be reasonably warm walking through the terraces. From Muri you follow the trail north, to Dhorpatan, in the direction of the Dhaulagiri Massif. With its seven summits above 7,000m, the Dhaulagiri Massif is undoubtedly one of the most impressive mountain areas in the Himalayas. You follow increasingly difficult paths high above the Myagdi Khola river. As the terrain becomes steeper, the trekking days become necessarily shorter, so that you can slowly acclimatise to the high altitude. Higher still, you walk through a marvelous U-shaped glacier valley to reach the Chhonbardan Glacier and eventually Dhaulagiri Base Camp at an altitude of 4,750 m. The team will stay in base camp for one day to acclimatise and to breathe in the fabulous views of the surrounding mountains. The toughest day of the trek is the crossing of French Col (5,400m) to reach the highest camp site in the Hidden Valley, located at 5,040m. In clear weather conditions, this section of the trek is not too difficult, but the Hidden Valley and the Dhampus Pass should not be underestimated and are notorious for attracting bad weather. From Dhampus Pass you can hope to enjoy breathtaking views on Tukuche Peak, Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Nilgiri and the Annapurna Massif. For those who have opted to climb Dhamphus Peak, the potential reward is a 6,000m snow summit. After the tiring descent down the north side of Dhampus Pass you finally reach Marpha, which is on the Annapurna Circuit trekking route. From Jomsom you ll fly back to Kathmandu via Pokhara. You ll have a full day in Kathmandu at the end of the trek. Crossing French Col into Hidden Valley. Photo: Chris Groves 3

Day 1-2 Day 3-4 Fly to Kathmandu, explore the city Team members joining the scheduled group flight from London will fly in the evening and arrive in Kathmandu on Day 2. For those joining land-only, you should plan to arrive in Kathmandu on Day 2, when services begin. The Summit Hotel lies ten minutes outside the noise and bustle of the city centre. It has extensive gardens, a swimming pool and an atmosphere of restful charm. The twin rooms are large and en-suite - single rooms are available for a supplementary fee. Fly to Pokhara and drive to Darbang (1,180m) Your adventure begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, where we overnight in a nice lodge. The following morning you drive to Beni, where you ll have lunch. The road to Darbang is a rough track and you should arrive there by mid-afternoon. Some people walk this section, but driving it is less unpleasant than walking amongst the traffic and dust and saves a day and a half walking. You camp at Darbang at an altitude of 1,180m. Day 5 Trek to Sibang (1,750m) In the morning you cross the road bridge over the Myagdi Khola (khola = river), the main valley that you ll be following towards Dhaulagiri. Although the trail is now a road, it is still very pretty walking. You initially follow the west side of the river, before crossing over the Dang Khola at Phedi, then climbing steeply up a zig zag path on a spur to reach the village of Dharapani for lunch. In the afternoon the road contours through cultivated and populated hillsides, to arrive at Sibang. Here you ll camp in the school grounds. Day 6 Trek to Jugapani (2,000m) You leave Sibang and walk around the ridge to be met by fantastic views of the Dhaulagiris. The trail contours below Phallya Gaon to arrive at the village of Muri for lunch. The path is the main route through this valley so has a lot of local traffic - folk going about their daily business, cattle and horses and other trekking groups. The backdrop is the panorama of this part of the Himalaya. To the north west we can see Gurja Himal (7,193m), Konabon (6,570m) and Myagumath (6,273m). To the north east, Dhaulagiri 1 (8,167m) and Manapati (6,380m). Muri is in a large, terraced bowl in the hillside and from here you ll descend several hundred metres to cross the Muri Khola by a metal bridge, then climb over a steep, forested ridge to descend the other side to find yourself once again on the west bank of the Myagdi Khola. You ll camp for the night at Jugapani at around 2,000m. This is near where the trail is joined by the track from the east side of the Myagdi Khola from Darbang. Day 7 Trek to Dobang (2,260m) Fairly soon after starting out this morning, the trail climbs steeply before contouring a steep slope high above the river. After this there is a straightforward final steep climb to gain the huge, cultivated bowl that is Boghara at around 2,080m. From Boghara the path goes up and down, wet at times, staying on the west bank of the Myagdi Khola, taking you through fantastic Himalayan forest, with the possibility of seeing monkeys playing in the trees. 4

You ll have lunch somewhere beyond Boghara after about 4 hours. It s another 5 hours of trekking to reach Dobang (2,260m), making this a long day. Dobang is a clearing in the forest with a tea house and space to camp near the base of the Konabain Khola, under the east face of Dhaulagiri 4. Day 8 Trek to Soligari (3,100m) Today's walk continues through the forest, a bit like a gigantic natural Botanical Gardens Walk! First you ll cross the Konabain Khola, and then cross the Myagdi Khola, both on seasonal wooden bridges (interesting!).the path then stays on the east bank of the main valley, reaching Soligari at 3,100m after a few hours. Day 9 Trek to Italian Base Camp (3,600m) From Soligari you ll cross the Choriban Khola flowing down from the east. The valley suddenly opens up and you ll begin to see the huge west face of Dhaulagiri 1 and the peaks towering above the west side of the Myagdi Khola. The forest becomes less dense, with more bamboo and eventually after climbing a steep ridge, you come out of the forest altogether and onto the open hillside under the west face of Dhaulagiri 1. This has become known as the Italian Base Camp and is reached in about 3 hours. It will be home for two nights at an altitude of 3,600m. Day 10 Acclimatisation at Italian Base Camp (3,600m) An acclimatisation day. In the morning you can walk up to c4,000m directly above camp, before returning for lunch. The afternoon can be spent catching up with domestic chores and writing up log books. Day 11 Trek to Chhonbardan Glacier Camp (4,200m) To gain access to the upper valley, that in turn takes you to the Chhonbardan Glacier, you ll have to cross a huge breach in the moraine and the frozen debris of a massive avalanche fan that forms at the bottom of the west face. The initial descent down the moraine slope is loose as you might expect, but the path had been much improved in Once in the upper valley, you ll pass the site of a large bivouac cave, and the sites of the American and French Base Camps. The path is now back on the west side of the river, and soon leads you onto the Chhonbardan Glacier, which is completely moraine-covered in its lower reaches. At around 4,220m there are platforms levelled on the glacier's surface, which can accommodate the team s camp for the night. This is quite a short day, but it is important not to ascend at this altitude too quickly. Day 12 Trek to Dhaulagiri Base Camp (4,600m) Another fairly short day, taking perhaps 4 or 5 hours to walk up the moraine-covered Chhonbardan Glacier to "Dhaulagiri Base Camp" at 4,600m. Base Camp is really a huge area of the glacier where expeditions have based themselves over the years. Terraces have been levelled on the stony ground and there is a choice of sites depending on who else is around. As at Italian Base Camp, you ll spend two nights here to become well acclimatised before going over 5,000m. Day 13 Acclimatisation at Dhaulagiri Base Camp (4,600m) 5

Another day for domestics, exploring, and taking in the magnificent setting. To the east is Tukuche Peak (6,920m) and to the south, we can look onto the north side of Dhaulagiri 1. Day 14 Cross the French Col (5,400m) into the Hidden Valley (5,040m) The path from base camp goes along the north side of the glacier. It is flat for a while, then it climbs a steep bank to eventually follow the crest of a massive moraine ridge to wide, open slopes that lead to the crest of French Col/Pass at 5,400m. It should take 4 or 5 hours to get there. Cairns, prayer flags and wonderful views provide distraction for a rest before descending easy slopes into "Hidden Valley", where your campsite for the night is at around 5,040m. Day 15 Optional ascent of Dhamphus Peak (6,060m) A pre-dawn start is the order for the ascent of Dhampus Peak. A straightforward climb technically, the terrain is likely to be a mixture of frozen snow fields and patches of slatey scree. At approximately 1,000m of ascent from high camp to the summit, you can expect this to be a very tough day physically. Breaking trail after fresh snowfall would make it an even more arduous climb. There is a long ridge of a mixture of very shattered slatey rock and snow, with occasional steps to negotiate. Axes, crampons, harnesses and ropes need to be carried, but may not be needed depending on the circumstances of the day. Cold is more likely to be a bigger issue and it is essential that everyone is prepared for potentially very low temperatures and a high windchill factor. The summit, at 6,060m is a fine rocky peak with extensive views of the Annapurnas to the south east, the Dhaulagiris to the south west, and Mustang to the north. The descent involves going back along the ridge a short way before descending slopes heading south for about 1,000m to join the path that crosses Dhampus Pass from Hidden Valley. You ll be met here by those choosing not to climb and the cook team, who will be waiting with refreshments. Day 16 Spare day We include a spare day in the itinerary to allow for the flexibility that is mandatory on a trek such as this. All the factors that contribute to the outcome of such an itinerary need to come together and any of weather, conditions underfoot, health, acclimatisation, logistics can easily disrupt the best laid plans. Day 17 Descend to Yak Kharka (3,680m). From your camp below Dhampus Pass, you ll continue along to the west edge of the Kali Gandaki Valley, where you ll descend to Yak Kharka, at 3,680m. It would be a huge descent all the way from Dhampus Peak into the bottom of the valley, so it s a good idea to camp here in order to save your knees! Alternatively, the team maye decide to continue all the way to Marpha. Day 18 Trek to Jomsom (2,670m) From Yak Kharka it is still over 1,000 metres to the floor of the valley, but once there, it is only about an hour's walk north east to Jomsom. You ll stay here for the rest of the day and overnight in anticipation of our flight to Pokhara tomorrow. In the event of bad weather and there being no flights out of Jomsom, the alternative 6

is to walk, jeep and bus south to Beni. This valley is part of the famous Annapurna Circuit, but a road has been extended to Jomsom, so it is now possible (if uncomfortable) to travel by motor vehicle. Day 19 Fly via Pokhara to Kathmandu A morning flight to Pokhara, then a flight on to Kathmandu should see you back at the Summit Hotel by early afternoon - a welcome swim in the pool and the delights of hot showers and clean clothes again. Perhaps even a celebration meal out together in the evening. Day 20 Kathmandu, shopping and sightseeing We recommend an early start to visit the temples of Pashupatinath and Swayambhunath and districts of Bhaktapur and Patan. Durbar Square is also on the essential list, as is the shopping area of Thamel. Day 21 Fly home The scheduled group flight back to London, UK via Delhi will leave Kathmandu in the early morning. You ll arrive at Heathrow in the evening.for those joining land-only, you should book your flight home today as services end. PLEASE NOTE: Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary, but as this is Adventure Travel in a remote mountain region, we cannot guarantee it. Weather conditions, road conditions, vehicle breakdowns and the health of climbers can all contribute to changes. The expedition Leader and our local agent will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but an easy going nature will be an asset! Dhamphus Peak is an optional climb on day 15. As a permit needs to be bought to climb the peak, and we need to employ more climbing Sherpas, there is an additional cost. Therefore the climb must be booked and paid for in advance please indicate on your booking form. Here is some feedback from previous teams: "More needs to be made about Dhamphus Peak, it was much better than anticipated" and "As good as Island Peak". The vertical relief from the high camp in the Hidden Valley to the summit is 1,000m, so expect this to be a long day (6.5 hours to the summit and 5.5 hours to drop down to our camp below Dhamphus Pass). It can also be bitterly cold. However, the effort of this climb is rewarded with some huge views of Dhaulagiri and the surrounding mountains. 7

The maximum team size is 14, plus a Jagged Globe leader, Sherpas and porters. Jagged Globe leaders are selected for their excellent personal track record of trekking and mountaineering at high altitudes, and their ability to successfully manage a team with differing mountaineering backgrounds. Recent expedition leaders on Dhaulagiri Circuit have been:» Tony Halliwell (Jagged Globe Head of Operations and Scottish Winter Courses Director, who has led expeditions to Nepal every year since 2013)» Rob Wymer (led five expeditions to Nepal in )» Mungo Ross (Has led over 40 expeditions for Jagged Globe, 20+ in Nepal) You can read more about these leaders and others on our website here: The Dhaulagiri Circuit is graded T3. You can read more about our grading system on our website. A recent trek leader wrote: The Dhaulagiri Circuit is a remote and spectacular trek. It is possibly as close as trekking gets to feeling like a remote expedition. Starting relatively low, the route spends the first few days in hot, humid, jungle-type vegetation and slowly winds upwards towards the barren moraine-filled landscape with enormous snowy mountains behind merely huge snowy mountains. It would be difficult to be evacuated from the lower, steep-sided gorges and jungle terrain, hence our experience requirements in the paragraph below. The trek involves walking on difficult trails, which are occasionally exposed in places, with big drops beneath. There is loose ground underfoot and the threat of stonefall on the day you cross the Chhonbardan Glacier. Further up the valley towards Dhaulagiri Base Camp, the trekking is on rocky moraine and on the French Pass, a dry glacier, which would be difficult under fresh snow. Past team members have reported that This is a tough trek and it gets very, very cold at the high camps. The Dhaulagiri Circuit is suitable for trekkers with previous experience of trekking at altitudes in excess of 5,000m. You need to be able to walk for up to 9 hours a day, carrying a light daypack. If you would like to climb Dhampus Peak, you need previous mountaineering experience in Scotland or the Alps of Scottish Grade I/II, Alpine F/PD- or equivalent. The peak is technically similar to Mera Peak or Stok Kangri, however it is a longer ascent than either of these climbs. Depending on the conditions, ropes may be required on some sections. 9

Any trek or expedition to Nepal relies on the hard work of local porters. It is their carrying of our supplies and baggage that makes a journey into the mountains possible. Jagged Globe is therefore careful to ensure that they are well treated, not exploited and have good protection from the elements. We work closely with our Nepal based partner, Summit Trekking, to provide shelter, clothing and footwear that match the severity of the environment. Porters who become sick are treated with the same care and attention as team members, and we have used helicopters to rescue porters from hazardous situations. In October 2013 a porter was evacuated from Hidden Valley by helicopter, the cost of which was covered by the insurance policy we put in place for them. Jagged Globe supports the work of the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG) and Porters Progress, and provides help and advice to those organisations to improve the working conditions of the porters on whom we depend. All trekkers are asked to provide feedback on porters' working conditions in post-trip questionnaires. We have inserted this paragraph for the benefit of those taking part in the Dhamphus Peak ascent. An expedition is a complete adventure and the culmination of training; it is the time to put learning into practice. We might rehearse, and refresh, but the objectives will be the summits we climb, the paths we trek, or the slopes we ski. As a team member, you will be with likeminded people, all seeking adventure and the camaraderie that people share when facing challenges together. You should be technically competent, so please check you meet the pre-trip requirements before booking. Whether climbing, trekking or skiing, the expedition will broaden your experience and deepen your knowledge; for example, by reaching new altitudes, by extending yourself technically and physically or by coping with extreme conditions. All the time, you will revel in the simple thrill of being among the mountains and enjoying the cultures encountered en route. Fundamental to this, will be the chance to make new friends along the way. Jagged Globe expeditions are not 'guided' or 'instructed', as our courses are, but 'professionally-led'. An expedition comprises a team leader (appointed by Jagged Globe), team members (you) and local guides (recruited in-country for their local knowledge). Our expeditions are well resourced and equipped, to ensure the objectives can be met. The leader will set the tone and the overall parameters for the conduct of the trip. The leader will ensure that every opportunity is taken to fulfil the objectives described in the trip's itinerary, whilst not slavishly being bound by it. The leader will establish a framework of safety, and engender a positive attitude towards ensuring a safe outcome. As a team member, you are responsible for your own participation, especially in those activities that are hazardous by nature. We look to you to be mindful of risks at all times and to use your initiative, common sense and previous experience to face up to them and to reduce them where possible. Local guides possess the detailed local knowledge we need to achieve our goals. Local guides are not sent to 'Guide', as is now understood when climbing in the Alps with a European-Certified Guide, but to act in the more traditional sense as pathfinders and helpers. We like our expedition teams to operate within an envelope of mutual support and trust, and the leader will work to build this as the trip progresses. This acknowledges that everyone on the team (the leader, yourself and the local staff) has a contribution to 10

make in helping towards the safe outcome of the venture you are participating in, proportionate to each person's knowledge and experience. Jagged Globe offers pre-trip weekends for all expeditions and treks. The pre-trip weekend is a key element of your trek or expedition.
