1 SUMMER TERM WEEK TH JUNE Y2 at Goblin Combe Year 2 children all had a fantastic time last week for their overnight visit to Goblin Combe. Many fun activities were undertaken including crafting whistles from the local environment and making tea light jars which looked amazing when all were lit at dusk, around the camp fire. The children also really enjoyed singing songs and Mrs Hart s guitar playing but maybe, for many, the best bit was toasting marshmallows on the fire! One of the most exciting things was playing in the woods hunting for the goblins that are supposed to live there. Rosie Being in my room was really good fun I loved the bunk beds. I was on the top one and Daisy was underneath. Rachael I enjoyed following the instructions for making the whistle, they were step by step instructions which made it easy to follow. Freddie

2 Year 6 at Barton Hall Raft building relied on team work. And if you didn t work together you would get nowhere. We started by designing our raft with small sticks and logs. Once we had our design we eventually got our raft on the water. Paddling it was also a team effort. And many people fell off! The children threw themselves into the various pursuits with typical energy and enthusiasm. The challenging weather did not diminish our enjoyment and we all came back happy but exhausted. The children s behaviour throughout the week was excellent and they were a lovely group to take on a residential trip. The food was top class that even Gordon Ramsey would ve been proud of! They always made sure we were eating healthy eating greens all the time. There were: Chocolate Waffles, Flapjacks and English breakfast. We also had some scary activities on Wednesday such a Trapeze, Zipwire and Giant Swing. Also, we did a sensory trail where you have to use your senses and climb through tunnels tyres and other obstacles blindfolded. In mountain biking they tested you on your cycling skills and if you were good enough you would go out onto the track. All of my group went out because we had a very small group and it would be easier for the instructors all to go out. The giant swing was amazing. You put on a harness and get attached to a metal bar and all of the rest of your team slowly pull a rope and pull you up. I went on with Elisa and we went to the top both times and it was so fun. The sensory trail was equally fun, you put on the goggles which block out your vision and you go around a trail. You also have a group leader and they tell what the next obstacle is. Ciara was at the front of our line and she did very well. By Emma W

The Longest Day Golf Challenge has been running since 2009 and,

3 Year 5 at Upper School Puzzle Day Pre-Prep Ballet Congratulations to all the Pre-Prep children involved in the ballet. They put on a lovely show and gave great pleasure to all those watching in the Lower School Hall. As you can see from the photos, on Monday the Y5 children had a thrilling session in the Upper School on maths puzzles and problem solving. They all said what a fun and challenging time they had and also how well the Year 7 pupils had overseen the event and supported them. We loved the Laser Maze challenge best of all. The Longest Day Golf Challenge has been running since 2009 and, in that time, has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support. The concept is simple: play four rounds in one day on or around the summer solstice, with all money raised going to the hard-working cancer charity. Sounds straightforward enough, right? Well it wasn t, even Mr George, aka The Running Man, found this challenge tough

18 hours later, after covering a distance of 20 miles and losing in the region of 1000 golf balls, Team Colston s completed the challenge.

However, above all of these, one word in particular stands out: exhilarated. Exhilarated to have not just taken on the Longest Day Challenge but conquered it!

Predictably, the ball found its way towards the trees but no matter they were off and running. 18 hours later, after covering a distance of 20 miles and losing in the region of 1000 golf balls, Team Colston s completed the challenge. There are many words that could be used to describe how the team felt about this challenge. Sore. Stiff. Uncomfortable. Exhausted. Shattered. The list goes on and on. However, above all of these, one word in particular stands out: exhilarated. Exhilarated to have not just taken on the Longest Day Challenge but conquered it! With the team, venue and date assembled, it was then just a matter of trying to rally as many people as possible to donate. The current total stands at 1,500, with more donations coming in all the time. Team Colston s would like to thank the parents for their very generous donations. EU Referendum The Vote! Rounders Reports U11C Rounders v BGS won 12-8 This was a good match to finish the season on with the strongest team winning thanks to sound fielding in the first innings followed by a fine batting performance, in the second. Holli and Katie both did well, after Emma W s hard hitting had given us the early lead. U11A Rounders v BGS won 14 9 This was an exciting game to watch. After the first innings it was extremely close with Colston s having 5 ½ and BGS 5. The girls then came out with much more determination for their second batting innings, gaining an impressive 8 ½ rounders. With some tight fielding they put BGS under a lot of pressure, and once Sophia caught out their strongest batter the game was ours. Isabelle deserves a special mention for some fantastic batting, 4 ½ of our rounders were down to her. A great performance girls; well done! 5 NOTICES & ANNOUNCEMENTS Instrument Lessons in September Colston s offers a range of instruments for pupils to learn. It is an enjoyable experience and an excellent learning opportunity for children, as well as many ensembles for children to extend their musical education. If you would like your child to start learning an instrument in September, please return the attached form to Miss Harriet Chambers hchambers@colstons.bristol.sch.uk If your child is in Year 6 and would like instrumental lessons to continue in the Upper School, please contact Upper School Music Department, Mr Michael Castle, mcastle@colstons.bristol.sch.uk and complete an application form. Calendar Date Amendment Apologies that we have noticed an error on our Summer Term Calendar. On Future Term Dates the end of the Spring Term 2017 should be Friday 31 March, not Thursday 31 March. Pre-Prep Concert Tickets for the Concert are available from the Lower School office; please note we are restricted to 2 tickets per family. Year 6 Play Performances of Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits will take place on Thursday 30 June and Friday 1 July in the Harry Crook Theatre at 7.00pm. Tickets are available from the school office. Stop Press! - Rounders Report U11B Rounders v BGS Lost 6-9 This was a good match to finish the season on, with the strongest team U11B team. We started the game with 27 good balls, the girls fielded first and did very well managing to take out 7 of their 9 players, leaving BGS to score just two rounders. The girls went into bat and scored 5 rounders. Extra time allowed the game to continue with just 9 extra balls; this proved to be a mistake as our fielding went into melt down with lots of silly mistakes allowing BGS to go on and win the game. Final score Colstons 6 - BGS 9.
