2 Page 2 Thursday, September 28, 2017 THE BOWLING NEWS Just Paying Attention The marketing of products and services has always been a challenge, but with more and more customer savvy and available information in the digital era, the challenge is different than ever before. This week, we hear again from BPAA Social Media Committee Chair and Sooner Bowling Center GM Mandy Haws. She gives an overview on how millennials are different, but like other generations before, offer their own unique set of values in addition to those tried and true values of preceding generations. They re interesting because while they are highly studied, analyzed, and hypothesized about, I don t think we ve seen their potential yet, possibly delayed by factors in and out of their control. They re also interesting because they keep the rest of us (generations) on our toes trying to figure them out. They re going to function in our world a little differently than any other generation. They can be challenging because it s not what the rest of us are used to, so that s a change for (Baby) Boomers on down. Many of them are highly responsible, capable, very open BUY - SELL AMF - BRUNSWICK EQUIPMENT - COMPLETE PACKAGES WORLD S LARGEST NEW - USED SPARE PARTS INVENTORY ALL AMF BUMPER PARTS: XS QBUMP, DURABOWL AND GEN II IN STOCK Tucker Bowling Equipment Co. 609 N.E. 3rd St. Tulia, Texas Call (806) Fax (806) Bowling Parts, Inc. I don t think that s bad, it s just different for the rest of us. Look at hippies, bra burners and Boomers they re running companies now, but still changing things in their own way, said Haws. Haws added she uses geofilters of existing social media platforms with her own center s business (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and SnapChat). Those allow her to market to a tighter-defined age group than ever before, as we ve seen before with bulk mail. A concept I ve discussed before here is the idea each generation has its preferred media choice, or way of getting its information. First, it was the printed word in books, then the audible word in radio, then the seen word in movies and television. These days, television is not the big dog on the block it used to be with this upcoming adult generation. What today s young consumers are into is their own media. Unlike cable TV and boomboxes of the late 1970 s, today s young consumers prefer the one they can hold in their hand, or listen to through ear buds. FOUNDED AND PUBLISHED BY JOE GENNARO FROM which continue to get more and more complex with each new version. Now add in different economic decisions being faced by millennials the last few years. As an example, The White Hutchinson Leisure and Learning Group has cited numerous studies are showing millennials are not going out as much, but saving up for a special night out. This trend is also partly due to social media participation in what used to be leisure time. A form of digital togetherness exists on a larger scale in online groups and communities, more so than in traditional social gathering places, like bowling centers, the mall, restaurants, and bars. So the question goes back to get millennials (and others, too, of course) back into bowling centers with that criteria in mind. As you might have thought, these incredible electronic pieces of technology offer a key to the next wave of marketing, able to pinpoint perspective customers without advertising through existing previous mass media. This perspective comes from Steve Schroeder, founder and CEO of Smart Community Technologies (SGT), who has a unique plan to increase traffic into centers. According to the company website, SGT offers mobile strategies that can not only drive consumers to your door, but also eliminate discounting through creative use of value so customers are happier paying full price rather than relying on discounts. He added the rewards would come from a larger group of businesses, not just bowling centers. By using Geo Fence Texting, a cell phone going into a designated area will be tagged to receive a message offering a special deal. Once a phone is tagged, it is in that business data base and will receive benefits to other businesses also subscribing to the system. Depending on your location, that could be Starbuck s and Chick-Fil-A, among others. Schroeder has proprietors in Michigan and Ohio already using an older version of this system. Next week, I ll present more from Schroeder on how this is more than a bowling project, but also how it can impact local economies well. ############### A British man who recently turned forty, only known to us as Rob, blogged about 40 different sporting events he was going to attend as he entered a fifth decade of life. Like many others, he has bowled before and watched it on television and on YouTube videos. Attending association football (soccer) matches is another sensory experience, but as part of a crowd of 350 (his estimation) inside a much more confined space is another type of sensory experience, feeling much more intimate, especially as players high-fived him as they walked to the interview area As you can read the rest for yourself here (s40rty. wordpress.com), Rob is amazed at what he sees and hears from his front row seats. Two of the subtle things are the constant hum of the pinsetter (Brunswick GS-90 series) and the sound of the ball returning to the bowler, in his words, breaking the polite silence as a bowler prepared to take a shot. 6 Page 6 Thursday, September 28, 2017 THE BOWLING NEWS PBA OIL PATTERNS Continued from Page 1 major championship patterns, plus the Chris Paul pattern, von Krueger added. Each pattern has specific characteristics including the distance oil is applied down the lane, how it is applied across the lane and the volume of oil applied to each lane. Two new named patterns will debut in The Dragon is a 45-foot pattern in the animal pattern library that figures to provide a high level of difficulty for PBA players. And for the first time, the PBA will have an official house shot design named in honor of the PBA s long-time celebrity bowling partner, Chris Paul, that is likely to become the PBA s highest-scoring pattern. The library of lane oiling patterns was designed by PBA Head of Lane Maintenance Sean Parry with the assistance of Brunswick, PBA s Official Lane Maintenance partner. The oiling patterns will be used exclusively throughout the GoBowling! PBA Tour, PBA50 Tour and PBA Regional program s 2018 seasons. Illustrations of the 16 revamped oiling patterns along with more detailed information can be found on pba.com under the Lanes and Equipment tab. Each pattern s name will be followed by a number indicating the length of the pattern in feet as it will be applied on a 60-foot lane. The new Cheetah 33, Chameleon 39, Scorpion 42, Shark 45 and Earl Anthony 42 patterns will debut at the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IX presented by Eldorado Reno Properties in Reno in November. The Go Bowling! PBA Tour s 2018 Big February events will feature the Don Johnson 40 pattern at the PBA Tournament of Champions in Akron; the Carmen Salvino 44 at the Barbasol PBA Players Championship in Columbus, Ohio, and the Dick Weber 45 at the Go Bowling! PBA 60th Anniversary Classic in Indianapolis. The Mark Roth 42 will be used for the Roth/ Holman PBA Doubles Championship in Columbus and for the PBA League competition in Portland, Maine. In addition to the new Dragon 45, the oil pattern library also will include the Wolf 33, Viper 36, Bear 39 and Johnny Petraglia 36 patterns. The Badger 52 will be removed temporarily from the rotation. Plans for the use of these patterns will be announced later. For decades, the PBA lane maintenance program has helped define the greatest players in the sport of bowling, said PBA CEO and Commissioner Tom Clark. This revised menu of oil patterns and the strategy of their release and implementation is in line with our core values, including integrity, complete transparency and recognizing both challenges and opportunities advanced technology presents. Most of all, we are proud of these diverse conditions that will demand a combination of player skills. Along with the distinct characteristics of the bowling centers and lane beds where the PBA conducts competition, these patterns will be a platform for champions while entertaining and educating fans. In addition to providing physical definitions of oiling patterns, the PBA uses visible blue oil on most telecasts, allowing fans to see the oil pattern and how the pattern changed during competition, providing another layer of education to the sport s challenges. The PBA recognizes that every oiling pattern will present a different challenge depending upon the type of lane surface, weather conditions, the viscosity of lane conditioning oil and other factors, von Krueger said. Every condition is also subject to change due to bowling ball traffic during competition which moves the oil around. But defining the physical aspects of each pattern is a valuable tool for players, tournament hosts and fans. Solving those characteristics is the challenge that makes bowling such a great sport.
