New Zealand - the road trip DISRUPTIV HIPHOP CULTURAL CENTRE Dierdre Dawson: We are the only company in New Zealand that specialises in all four elements of hip hop. And we feel that s really important because often hip hop is assumed to be like rap-music. And the other elements are overlooked, graffiti and break dancing are very important within our culture. This is our art-studio. It s very, very messy. And we have four artists working on and off out of here. I think we re pretty unique. We ve done a bit of research around the world and it doesn t seem to be any other company doing what we do, I think, on such a large scale. We opened up this gallery about a year and a half ago. This current show is a t-shirt exhibition of nine Auckland designers that have designed about four or five t-shirts each. I like to say we definitely have a Maori, Polynesian flavour within our hip hop. But it s still influenced a lot by American culture obviously, it s all hip hopers. A lot of people that participate in hip hop culture are Maori or Polynesian. There s also Pakeha people as well you know, but everyone s doing it and I think if it s your culture to start with, then of course that s going to come through in your art you know. TAMAKI MAORI VILLAGE Rotokiwi Manihera: The village itself is one that would have been set up for hunting actually. They were not lived in permanently. Because of warfare amongst the tribes, the villages were set up temporarily. Villages like these they were erected simply as temporary shelter; to get the food of the area, the plantations of the area, to restock the main villages. 1
You'll find in the Maori world it was the men that had done the plantations, not our women. The men were also the warriors and guardians of the tribes. Maori were very clean, and very healthy. A lot of the cultures did not know sickness, and it was simply how they lived, very healthy. Food was abandoned; our streams were full of eels and fish, the birdlife As I said they looked after that kind of thing. We still collect a lot of food. As I insisted, we go into the native bush; we know what we re eating. But I think that we could not return to that particular time, because we are today s people. MUNGATAUTARO MOUNTAIN: KIWI HUNTING Jillana Robertson: We ll head up into the bush, but we are going to want to. If we have a bag to leave all the rubbish outside of the enclosure, then that ll be fine. Come on up. We ve got three Kiwis in here. Some of our elders that live around the mountain - their parents don t have any reflection of kiwi. They ve been gone for years. So, they are back on the mountain so we need to protect them. Stoats are the number one killer of kiwi chicks. Dogs are the number one killer of kiwi adults. We ve had several cases where one dog has taken out kiwis. I m actually from the north-eastern part of the United States, New Hampshire is my state. And I came here with a field studies programme for university, four and a half years ago. And I loved it here so much, and I loved the attitude that people have towards conservation in New Zealand. We don t really have many of our native birds in New Zealand, like you hardly ever hear about the Toohees and the Wood Pigeons. They re very pretty and have a nice song So, we re helping the native animals, and to do it we have to kill the pests. How many rats are there worldwide compared to a couple of hundred kiwis? 2
Kiwis are endangered species, rats are like everywhere. You can go around the world, and you ll find a rat just about anywhere. You come to New Zealand, you ll find a kiwi. You can t find it anywhere else. So, what I ve got here is a receiver and an aerial and it works just like a radio, so you turn it to a certain dial, and that s the frequency that the kiwis are on, and then whatever direction I point it in, hopefully it will get me The closer I am to the Kiwi, the louder it will beep. We want people to come and visit us now because we want them to come back in two years, five years, ten years time, and see the difference, and hear the difference. Because we ve actually had a time where chicks have been allowed to fledge; and so we already have more birds in here now than we did before. It s quiet again, so it s out of our range. It picks up here... Now we re going to start reintroducing the really cool birds that are not everywhere on New Zealand, so that the kiwi and the Kokako and the Saddleback and the Kakariki are already here, but there s just all these birds that should be here. These are really high stressed birds so this bird s heartbeat right now is really going fast. There you have it; the Western North Island Brown Kiwi. We actually want them to be stroppy, remember. Because in the wild they re going to need to be able to fight things off. It has these big claws, that's what they fight with, that s what they scratch you with. They can dig in the ground, but it s this very unique bill. It s the only bird in the world that I know of that has its nostrils at the end of the bill. So it probes through the ground, and the nostrils are just down there. Still he s a juvenile. If you will do it one at a time, okay? No one else move while you re doing it. And then when you touch it, slowly, just walk down there. People care about conservations. You get enviro-schools, like St. Peters school that come and do work in areas like this. So people just care, and it s really nice to be in a community where people care about the environment. 3
SMALL BONE PARK CRICKET PRACTISE Daniel Tim & Christian Thurston: We ve come down to play cricket. We ve just been at cricket training, and now we re just having a little net by ourselves. Yes, just to concentrate on our technique. I m concentrating on my bowling, cause I m a bowler, and Dan is concentrating on his batting I m Dan, I m 14 and I m from Rotorua, New Zealand. I m Christian, I m 14 and I m from Rotorua, New Zealand. A bowler is the person who runs in with the ball and bowls it to the batter. And the batter is He s the person standing at the other end when the ball comes down, he is going to try to hit it, and once he s hit it he s got to run to the other end and run back, and that s how he gets runs. When you re standing there as a batsman with your bat and someone comes in and bowls a ball at you at one hundred kilometres per hour, and you ve got to hit it. I find it quite fun actually, just trying to hit it as far as you can. But when you re standing on the field like some of these people here.. They can stand out there for four hours, sometimes two days. That does sometimes get boring, it depends if you bowl or 'cause when you re bowling you re doing something, but when you re just standing there and the ball doesn t come to you, it can get a bit boring. It s different aspects of bowling, you can try spin or pace, and when you get pace you just want to try to get the bats man out. And it s fun trying. If you hurt the bats man it s like good. Yes, because it s like rivalry between the bowler and the bats man, and the bowler will try to do all different things to get him to hit in the air and try to bowl him out. So there s that rivalry, so it just makes it a little bit better, I think. It s quite trendy; it s not like wearing all that rough gear for rugby. You wear like wool jerseys and things like these, the pads and the gloves and all that kind of stuff. Helmets and stuff.. It s quite expensive. A pair of pads costs about one hundred dollars and the helmet is quite expensive. And the bat...the bats can go up for heaps. 4
Cricket is a big summer sport. You guys probably play sports like ice hockey or soccer, so it s like that to us. Like ice hockey is cricket to us. Play cricket, cricket s cool. MAMUKI SHEEP FARM Kain Fredrikson: My name is Kain, I m 19 years old and welcome to my farm Mamuki I ve been working on the farm here now for four years, we do all kind of work on the farm. We ship a lot of stock and shear a few sheep and drive tractors and put up fences and cut a bit of bush down. Quite a lot of work to be done on the farm. Today I m going to show you how to shear a sheep. Rattle your dags is an old saying that s been around for years. On the back of the sheep they normally have a few dags, and when they dry they rattle when they run away. So that s where the saying Rattle you dags come from. And it s sort of saying hurry up, and do your work and get on with it. Don t like getting up at four o clock in the morning to go and muck cows. But I like the life style here; it s a good life style. RAFTING ON THE KAITIAKI RIVER Steve Wall: Greetings everyone, I m Steve. I come from a place called Talanaki. It s heaps of fun. We go over the drops, boat flips.. First reaction is panic station. Pull your head in towards these compartments, they all become air pockets. Any of you guys have any medical conditions we should know about? Pretty much shit scared doesn t count. We re going to have a lot of fun. So remember to smile. 5
