7 Each team has 20 OVERS to score as many runs as they can or to bowl the other team out as quickly as they can! T20 = Twenty 20 1 OVER = 6 balls unless there is a wide or no ball (see page 20-21) 5

8 The BATTING TEAM Each team has 11 batters. Batters need to score as many runs in 20 overs as they can without getting out. 6

9 WAYS TO SCORE 1 RUN 4 RUNS 6 RUNS EXTRAS RUNS The batter hits the ball and runs to other end of the pitch. Keep running to score more runs. Hit the ball to the boundary rope on the bounce. Hit the ball over the boundary rope without it touching the ground. are runs awarded to the batting team from the following: Wide No Ball Bye Leg Bye Free Hit Free Hit Only wides and no balls must be re-bowled by the bowler (see pages 20-21) FREE HIT If a no ball (see page 14) is bowled the batter gets a free hit. This means the batter can swing hard at the next ball they face without fear of getting out - caught, bowled or LBW. WATCH OUT as these often end up in the crowd! 7

10 The FIELDING TEAM The fielding team consists of a wicket keeper (stands behind the stumps with the gloves), a bowler (the one bowling the ball at the batter) and 9 x fielders. The aim is to get 10 x wickets and stop the batting team from scoring runs. Howzat 8 = HOW IS THAT? A player must ask the umpire if the batter is out (the Appeal)

15 SOME WAYS YOU CAN TAKE A WICKET... BOWLED The bowler hits the stumps with the ball & the bails come off. CAUGHT The batter has hit the ball in the air and a fielding player catches the ball without it bouncing. LBW Short for leg before wicket and means the umpire thinks the ball would have hit the wickets if it hadn t hit the batters pads first. 13

16 Bowling Overs are bowled at alternate ends of the pitch. A bowler can t bowl 2 overs in a row. Bowlers bowl a maximum of 4 overs each 14 NO BALL When a bowler s foot goes over the bowler s crease or the ball goes above the batter s waist without it bouncing = FREE HIT

17 FAST BOWLING A bowler can bowl the ball at up to 160kph! The faster the bowler the harder it is to hit BUT the faster it can reach the boundary. SPIN BOWLING The slower the bowler the harder it can be to score runs because the spin can trick the batter. 3 STUMPS AND 2 BAILS MAKE A WICKET BAILS STUMP CREASE THE BAILS AND STUMPS LIGHT UP WHEN THE BAILS ARE DISLODGED FROM THE STUMPS PITCH 15

19 Fielding RESTRICTIONS Only 2 players in THE FIELDING TEAM are allowed outside the inner circle (painted on the oval) during the first six overs of an innings. After six overs, ANOTHER THREE PLAYERS can join them outside the inner circle. THE SCOREBOARD will update you on how many overs have gone as the game progresses. 17

20 UNDERSTANDING THE SCORE BOARD The current amount of overs which have been bowled, out of the total 20 overs The amount of runs the batting team need to score per over to win The amount of runs per over the batting team is currently scoring The amount of runs the first batting team had scored at the same point in their innings

21 Current batting team The amount of wickets the batting team has lost, out of a total of 10 The total runs the current batting team has scored so far WHAT IF THE SCORES ARE LEVEL AFTER 40 0VERS? If scores are level at the completion of both innings, then each team gets to bat for one Super Over. The Super Over is six balls to try and score as many runs as they can. If the teams still can t be separated the match will be declared a tie. WHAT IF IT RAINS? If it rains, players may be forced to leave the field. If there is a substantial delay, the Duckworth Lewis system may need to be applied (see page 20).

22 Glossary All out An innings ends when 10 of the 11 batters on the batting side are dismissed ie. they are all out. Appeal When the bowler or fielder shouts Howzat (how is that) at the umpire to ask if their last ball took the batter s wicket. The umpire cannot give a batter out unless the fielding side appeals. However a batter who is obviously out (for instance if they are bowled) will normally leave the field without waiting for an appeal. Bails The small piece of wood that lies on top of the stumps, two of these and three stumps form the wicket. In BBL, the bails light up when hit. Bouncer A short and fast delivery that rises up near the batter s head. Watch the batter duck! Bowled One of the ways a batter can get out. Occurs when a delivery hits the stumps and removes the bails. Bye A team can still score runs when the batter has not hit the ball. This usually happens when the batter misses the ball and it is fumbled or missed by the wicket keeper. Caught & bowled When a batter is dismissed by a catch taken by the bowler. Crease The two parallel lines at either end of the wicket. A batter who does not have either the bat or some part of their body touching the ground behind the crease is considered out of their ground and can be dismissed by being stumped or run out. Dot ball A delivery bowled without any runs scored off it, so called because it is recorded in the score book with a single dot. We like these when we are fielding but not so much when we are batting! Duckworth Lewis A system developed to calculate a reduced run total to chase from a reduced amount of overs, if the game is delayed by rain. Fall of wicket The batting team s score at which a batter gets out. Often abbreviated to FoW on the scoreboard. Golden duck When a batter gets out for nought (zero), on the first ball faced in their innings. If the batter faces more than one delivery but still gets out for nought it is just called a duck. Hit wicket Occurs when a batter accidentally dislodges their own bails as they try to hit the ball or set off for a run. In BBL the bails will light up when this happens! 20

23 Knock A batter s innings. A batter who makes a high score in an innings can be said to have had a good knock. Leg Bye As per a Bye but the ball deflects from the batter s body. Maiden over An over in which no runs are scored. Maiden overs are very rare in the BBL. No Ball If the bowler s front foot lands in front of the white bowling line, the batting side gets one free run and the bowler has to bowl the ball again - plus the batter gets a free hit. Openers The first two batters to face the bowlers. They are normally skilled in facing the best bowlers, who traditionally bowl first from the other team. Overthrows A batter can score extra runs when the fielding side don t throw the ball back accurately to the wicket keeper. Pads Protective equipment for batters and wicket-keepers that cover their legs. Partnership The number of runs scored between a pair of batters before one of them gets dismissed. Plumb A dismissal by LBW that is indisputable / obvious. Run rate The average number of runs scored per over. Sent in A team which bats first after losing the toss is said to have been sent in by the opposing captain. 12th man The player who doesn t get selected in the team. They can replace one of the playing 11 as a fielder but cannot bat or bowl. Wicket Has multiple meanings. All of the below: 1. A set of stumps and bails 2. The pitch 3. The dismissal of a batter Confusing we know! Wide A delivery that passes illegally wide of the wicket, scoring an extra run for the batting side. A wide does not count as one of the six deliveries that must be made in each over - an extra ball must be bowled for each wide giving the batting side more chances to make runs. 21
