2 Background Past, Present & Future Past Research by Ian Clarke shows that cricket was first played in Wadebridge in 1850, with the Club playing in the Wadebridge and District League before joining the Eastern Section of the Cornwall Cricket League in In 1954 AJH Key (a stalwart member of the Club who dedicated many hours as secretary and to improving the wickets at the Club which lead to County games being hosted by the Club in the 1950s) and his committee engaged the services of a professional, J W (Bill) Murphy who had been called to the Yorkshire nets before World War 2. He went on to become the Club s all-time leading run scorer and score several hundreds for Cornwall. He joined a fine team which included other county players Tris Bax and Tom Meneer. The Club won the Eastern section 12 times between 1951 and 1973, and were county champions in 1965 (shared with Truro), 1966 and The Club was also a founder member of the Hawkey Cup winning the competition in 1958, 1959 (as Wadebridge B ), 1964 and This golden period saw many fine players put on the Club colours. At various times the bowling department contained county bowler David Halfyard, Jimmy Rickard who produced match-winning final performances, and Brian Read a Cornwall swing and seam bowler. The spin department was looked after by Ian Gill, Billy Vivian and Gerald Tregunna. In 1960 Keith Davis joined the Club and was captain for nine years, playing for the County as an all-rounder, and is now a Club life-member. At this time the Club was graced by many fine wicket-keepers including Tris Bax, Doug Yelland and Eddie Price (who played for Surrey Young Amateurs). Bob Irons, Brian Symons, Mike Proctor and Bernie Maycock were excellent fielders saving many runs in the covers and gully. The 1970 s and 80 s saw the decline of the Club, John Harbinson and Tim Redman were the stand-out players, but there were few young talented players around. However, Robert Brooks developed into a fine wicket-keeper batsman, and Steve Mahon arrived from the Windward Islands and proved to be a fine allrounder. In 1995 the Club engaged opening batsman Tim Walton as professional, and along with the big-hitting Nick Yelland (both of whom played for Cornwall), helped score the runs that brought Premier Division cricket back to Wadebridge. The Club slipped down the divisions at the turn of the century, but regained County One status in 2005 under the leadership of Peter Dingle and Neil Richards. The Club has remained at this level up to the present day, with Charlie Ellis leading the team for the last three seasons. Stuart Parkyn has recently been appointed as 1 st XI captain for the 2015 season. Present In recent years the Club has made significant progress, in particular with a junior cricket section which was formed over 10 years ago by Richard Centini. The Club has reached and maintained the desirable Clubmark status which recognises good standards in the provision of training and matches for juniors, and now have over 75 juniors playing at the Club. The Club in 2009 also introduced a third senior team for the first time to enhance the development of the Club s youngsters from junior to senior cricket. All three senior sides now boast a large proportion of players that have come through the Club s junior section. Two such youngsters that have played for the Club since a young age have recently gone on to first class county academies, with both James Turpin and Jack Butler moving to Gloucestershire. For the past six years the Club has taken part in the Chance To Shine initiative which sees coaches go into local schools and introduce and develop cricket within the local area. Particular emphasis has been placed on

girls and womens cricket, with the Club running a womens team for the first time in 2014, finishing a very creditable third in the Cornwall Womens Cricket League.

One such girl who has played for the Club since a young age is Sophie Mackenzie, who has gone on to play for the County age group and senior ladies teams and this winter has been selected to take part in the training programme with England s Under 19 development squad, and has just returned from a fast bowling camp in South Africa where she trained alongside the England Lions. The Club s senior mens teams currently play in County Division One, Division Three East and Division Five East, the third team having gained promotion in Future The Club has ambitious plans to continue to develop the Club, and bring Premier Division cricket back to the town. Central to these plans will be the building of a new Clubhouse to replace the existing building which has become out-dated for the Club s many teams. This project (entitled Project 2015 ) will see a new purpose built facility be built adjacent to the current Clubhouse, providing new changing rooms, scorers and umpire facilities, a large Club room and disabled access. Details of the project can be seen below. This will be the biggest project in the Club s history, and has already seen favourable responses from the England and Wales Cricket Board who have indicated assistance in delivering the project. The project will transform the landscape of the Club and deliver superb facilities for generations to come. This will require large financing, so any assistance either in terms of donations, sponsorships, time, professional help or the like are hugely appreciated. Further plans include enhancing the growing junior section, with two more coaches being qualified through the winter 0f This will add to the current coaching structure and enhance the experience for the Club s many promising youngsters.

4 For the 2014 season the Club also developed a new third XI pitch, in partnership with the St Kew Playing Field Trust in the Playing Fields north of St Kew Highway. This allowed the third XI to have their own dedicated pitch rather than playing at another Club s ground, and could potentially be used by other teams in future years. This required a great deal of cost and effort from the Club s members to get the pitch ready for cricket at quite short notice, and had the support of the Cornwall Cricket League and Cornwall Cricket Institute of Groundsmen. Further development of the Club s training facilities including new practice nets are also planned for the near future. Advertising board sponsor Situated alongside the Club s main pitch in Wadebridge is an electronic scoreboard which is used on match days. Sponsors can display their company on advertising boards next to the scoreboard, for a cost of 200 for two seasons (from the initial installation date). This does not include production of the board, which in previous years has cost approximately 120 if you wanted the Club to source. If you wished to have an advertising board at both the Wadebridge main ground and also the third XI ground at St Kew the cost would be 300 for seasons (again not including the cost of production for both boards) Handbook advertising The Club will be producing in-house a handbook for the 2015 season, giving details of Club fixtures, news, photos and policies. This will be distributed to Club members, opposition teams, around the town and will be available to Club guests and visitors. To have a ½ page advert in the Club 2014 handbook the cost would be 20, for a full page advert 30. Should you wish to advertise in the Club handbook, please either provide artwork or information that can be scanned, or the details to the sponsorship secretary as below. Matchball sponsorship There are 11 home games in the season for each of the senior men s teams and 5 home games for the women s team. For the first XI there are neutral umpires and a match ball to pay for, and other teams a match ball. To sponsor a first XI home match a match sponsorship would be 50, this would include welcome drinks for the sponsor should they be able to attend the fixture, advertising at the Club on the day of the fixture in question, and a full page advert throughout the season in the Club s 2015 handbook.
