2 CONTINUOUS CRICKET (Revised Sept. 2016) A good, simple game for all ages to improve cricket bowling, batting and ielding skills. AI M Bowling: To bowl, with the proper action, and bounce the ball so that it hits the stumps. Batting: To score as many runs as possible by hitting the ball into gaps and running. Fielding: To stop the batters scoring by either catching the ball or stopping it and getting it back to the bowler as quickly as possible. ORGANI ZATI ON Equipment: 1 plastic Kwik-Cricket set: 2 sets of stumps to make the wicket, 2 bats (one of each length), 2-4 cones or ield markers and softball size wif le-ball. Teams: Divide up into two equal teams (preferably 10-a-side) For competitive play there must be a minimum 4 of each gender. Batting: Batter number 1 starts in front of the stumps (about 1m away) ready to hit the ball. All remaining batters sit/stand a safe distance behind the stumps. Fielding: Fielders spread out, a safe distance from the batter. There needs to be one bowler and one wicket keeper. All other ielders may be placed strategically. Playing Area: Set out the activity as shown in the diagram below, or refer to Field Setup diagram. 2 sets of stumps (wicket) should be used to speed up the game and for calling wides. The cones should be set 4m away from the stumps. Match Length: minutes Kwik-Cricket Set 8 Softball Size Wiffle Ball
3 THE GAME The bowler bowls the ball (preferably with one bounce) to the batter who tries to hit it. If contact is made, with the bat or body* (*provided batter attempted to hit it if not, no runs can be scored), the batter can CHOOSE to run to either marker, tap their bat and return to the stumps to score a run. Fielders must try to catch the batter out in the air, or stop the ball and return it back to the bowler. The bowler can bowl the ball again as soon as they receive it, even if the batter is not back in time. The batter can be OUT by being caught, bowled, or by hitting their own wicket (with their bat or body). Each OUT results in 3 penalty runs.. Each team bats for a set period of time or overs. When all the overs have been bowled the teams swap. The team that scores the most runs wins. BOWLI NG Bowler bowls from a minimum of 8 metres indicated by two markers. Run-up no longer than 3 metres. The bowler must try to complete the proper bowling action, if they cannot, they should just throw the ball at a slower pace. Bowlers must keep their front foot behind an imaginary line connecting the two markers when bowling. If the ball is put safely into play, the ielders throw the ball back to the bowler as quickly as possible. The bowler bowls when ready. Each bowler bowls ONE OVER (six deliveries) before being replaced. The ielders rotate clock-wise so that each member of the team has chance to bowl and be wicketkeeper. After the last ball of the over is put in play - the next bowler has to quickly move into the bowling area to receive the ball and bowl the next over. Relax arm, use your shoulder! Batter The batter scores runs by hitting the ball and running to a marker, tapping their bat down and returning back to the hitting area Bowler The bowler bowls the ball over arm towards the batter, with the aim to get the batter out. The bowler must not bend and then straighten their elbow in the bowling action, or it will be deemed throw. Fielders The aim of the ielders is to limit the batter s runs and to get the batter out by catching the ball after it has been hit with the bat, or by getting the ball back to the bowler so they can bowl again Wicketkeeper The ielder who stands behind the wicket and stops the ball if the batter misses it, or catches the ball without it bouncing after it has been hit by the batter WIDE: The batter must attempt to hit every ball bowled. Any ball that is missed and does not hit the double set of stumps will be called WIDE. It will result in a 2 run penalty (plus any additional runs completed by the batter) being scored for the batting side. The ball will count towards the bowler s over total. NO BALL: If the bowler oversteps the bowling line, throws the ball unfairly, or bowls the ball over the batter s shoulders. NO BALL is called, the batter can score runs without risk of being bowled or caught OUT, plus 2 run penalty. The ball will count in the bowler s over total.
4 BAT T I N G Each batter will bat for ONE complete OVER (6 deliveries), and score as many runs as possible. The Batter must make a legitimate attempt to hit every ball bowled. If contact is made, with the bat or body, then the batter while holding their bat can CHOOSE whether to run to a marker (two are provided, one on each side) and tap their bat to score a run. They may run more than once, but must run to the opposite marker. If the batter is on the way back to the hitting zone and is out bowled, the previous run will count. If they have not tapped their bat on a marker, no run is scored. The batter is OUT when bowled, caught or hitting their own wicket (with their bat or body) 3 run penalty to the team. maximum 9 penalty runs per over. If the batter is Ba er will tap their bat on a marker for a run. out more than 3 times in an over No further penalty marked as 0 runs scored. Last ball of an over: If the ball is hit safely into play, the ball is returned to the next bowler in the bowling area. Play is called DEAD. All completed runs count. The next batter should be standing and ready to take over. Last ball of an innings: If the last ball is hit safely into play, the batter can keep running until the wicket is hit. The ielders must irst return the ball to the bowler. The bowler may then throw the ball at the wickets. If the bowler misses, any player can throw the ball at the wickets, from where they get the ball. The batter must not interfere with the throw, and scores as many runs as they have completed before the wicket was hit. Indoors: Walls at a certain distance can be designated for automatic runs (2 or 4 runs). Ball caught off a wall, and balls striking the ceiling could be considered OUT. (See Field Setup diagram) If required: batters take turns to umpire and keep score. FI ELD I NG Fielders should stand in an athletic position ready for the ball to be hit. Safe Fielding Zone: Draw an imaginary line between the bowling marker and the run scoring marker on each side and you will have a trapezoidal area where no ielders may stand. They may rush in after the ball has been bowled. When a ielder takes a catch, they should hold the ball up and say HOWZAT! The umpire will con irm, by signaling out. Play is DEAD. The batter and bowler reset before next ball. Honour System for catches if the ielder claims it caught batter is OUT. Athle c Posi on: hands ready! Chasing a ball to the boundary
