Durham City Cricket Club At the second attempt Welcome to the start of a new season at Durham City Cricket Club and the 1 st XI s opening fixtures against Burnmoor and Philadelphia. We welcome both teams to Green Lane for what we hope will be a weekend of exciting matches to kick off the season. The weather forecast is not good for the weekend, but we live in hope! Yes it must be the new cricket season on a Bank Holiday weekend So it s still a bit thin on news in this programme, but plenty of information, and a request to send in any news items, event details, for sale items, kit exchange, etc to me by Thursday lunchtime for that weekend s programme. I ve left in a few items from last weekend that may have passed you by with the general cancellation of fixtures. Durham City Cricket Club is to run Introduction to Cricket coaching sessions for primary school boys and girls around the 6-11 age group starting on Sunday May 6 th. The sessions will run every Sunday morning between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon (weather permitting) until at least the school summer holidays with a possibility of continuing into and through August if sufficient young cricketers are interested. The scheme costs for the season (or 4.00 per session) for non members and for the season (or 2.00 per session) for members. 3 rd XI The Thirds are on the look out for bowlers. Anyone with the pace of Dale Steyn or who can turn it like Murali are welcome to apply! [Alternatively, I m informed that anyone with the pace of Murali or who can turn it like Steyn are also welcome to apply! Ed]
Last weekends cricket was decimated by the weather, the various league and cup games were called off by the management committees two and three days in advance as grounds were declared flooded and unfit. Ironically both Saturday and before lunch on Sunday proved to be fairly dry and certainly our ground was playable. Match reports therefore do carry a certain similarity although it has given our art department a chance to get carried away. We can reveal that although Durham is not subject to a hose pipe ban, sympathy and solidarity with those parts of the country affected has been shown. There have been no reports of anyone using a hose pipe to water their gardens. Saturday 28 th April Under 13s v Philadelphia (H) League Cup Saturday 28 th April 1 st XI v Whitburn (A)
Saturday 28 th April 2 nd XI v Whitburn (H) Sunday 29 th April Under 11s v Eppleton (H) (Is that Geoff Hazell?) Sunday 29 th April Development XI v Ryhope (A)
Cup Comes Home Thanks to the generosity of Peter Nearney and his family the Cricket Club have recently been presented with a trophy given to one of his distant ancestors who played for Durham City 1 st XI when they won the League Championship for the first time in Samuel Sorby, who is pictured with the rest of the team in the Club s history on page 67 was born in 1878 in Durham and lived in Mavin Street, Durham. He was one of ten siblings and served in the DLI from 9/12/1915 until 12/9/1919 before returning to Durham and living in the City until his death in 1945 aged 66. He seems to have been primarily a bowler who played mostly Second Team cricket and took a lot of wickets for the team and obviously promotion to the first team. He is mentioned regularly in the history annuls as a leading wicket taker of the day. Samuel played in the first team in the very first Senior League played by City against Seaham Harbour in City won the game by 43 runs. In this first season he figures in the Second Team averages, batting 8 times and scoring 46 runs, and bowling 89.3 overs taking 21 wickets. A pretty effective strike rate. When the league was won in 1907 Samuel played a number of games for both the First and Second teams. In 1909 he was the Second s leading wicket taker with 61 victims. He repeated the feat in 1910 with a haul of 58 wickets. In 1913, the last season before WWI, Samuel had the best bowling average for the Second Team, 9.12, although again he played for the First Team and was instrumental in City handing out a thrashing. Playing against Seaham Harbour Durham batted first and declared with the score on 250 for the loss of only two wickets, SH only managed 59 all out in reply, with a certain S Sorby taking 7 for 30. His trophy is now displayed behind the bar. For information we have referred to THE HISTORY OF DURHAM CITY CRICKET CLUB Compiled and written by Mr A L Parsons in 1972 (Hopefully his son David, the club secretary, will produce volume 2)

CRICKETFORCE During Cricketforce this photograph was taken prompting the question How many people does it take to watch someone dig a hole? Many of you voted for the cricket club at the end of last year to replace the old boiler. If you haven t heard WE WON! The new boiler has already been installed and over the years to come it will save the club s in heating bills and because of its efficiency will also reduce the carbon footprint. The grant from NatWest was actually more than needed for the boiler so the additional sum has been utilised to acquire outdoor furniture to create an outdoor entertainment area. We would have included this in last weeks programme but thought better about it during the extremely damp drought. Thank you all for voting and thank you NatWest.

It is that time once again, when the big supermarkets have been issuing vouchers. The club can exchange them for valuable and much needed training equipment. Please collect them and hand them to Christine as soon as possible. Thank you.
