2 Massena Invitational Competition MASSENA ARENA HARTE HAVEN SHOPPING CENTER, MASSENA, NEW YK The Massena Invitational, hosted by the Massena Figure Skating Club, is an annual, non-qualifying competition which offers a variety of singles and group events, and Adult categories in many disciplines. The Massena Invitational will be conducted in accordance with the rules and regulations of U.S. Figure Skating, as set forth in the current rulebook, as well as any pertinent updates which have been posted on the U.S. Figure Skating website, EXCEPT AS MODIFIED BY THIS ANNOUNCEMENT. Please read element charts and eligibility requirements carefully. This competition is sanctioned by US Figure Skating and Skate Canada (PENDING). ELIGIBILITY: This competition is open to all eligible, restricted, reinstated or readmitted persons as defined by the Eligibility Rules, and who are a currently registered member of U.S. Figure Skating or Skate Canada. Please refer to the current rulebook for non-u.s. citizen requirements. TEST LEVEL: Competition level eligibility is the highest test (USFS or Skate Canada) passed as of the entry deadline (February 14, 2019) in the discipline the skater is entering. Entrants may skate at any level above that for which they qualify, but they may not skate down in any event. Skaters who placed in the top four in a final round of their last qualifying competition in their divisions must move up one level, except for novice and higher. AGE RESTRICTIONS/REQUIREMENTS: All age restrictions are age as of close of entries. Skaters entering juvenile free skate events must be under 13 years of age at the close of entries. Skaters entering open juvenile free skate events, must be at least 13 years of age at the close of entries. Skaters entering beginner pre-juvenile events and adult events will be divided as closely as possible by age should the number of entries warrant more than one group. For all events where permitted by US Figure Skating, if there are insufficient entries to hold separate events, male and female skaters will compete against one another in a combined event. Secure Online Registration Entries will be summited online through EntryEeze at: Deadline February 14, 2019 The entry fees are: $40.00 for the first event $35.00 second event $30.00 each additional event $40.00 per team, compulsory event $40.00 per small group showcase event $25.00 LATE FEE The competition committee reserves the right to limit the size of each event, to cancel any event with less than two entrants (with refund of entry fee), and to combine or divide groups as necessary. Before canceling an event, the committee may ask skaters to skate up a level or skate an exhibition with judge s critique if they are the only competitor in a given level. A skater electing to exhibit will forfeit return of their fee for that event. FACILITIES: The competition will be held at The Massena Arena, Harte Haven Shopping Center, Massena, NY The rink is 85 ft x 200 ft with rounded ends. Snack bar and locker rooms will be available.

3 REFUND POLICY: Entry fees will not be refunded after February 14, 2019 unless no competition exists or the event is canceled. There will be no refunds for medical withdrawals. Checks returned for nonsufficient funds will be charged a $30 fee; in that circumstance, payment of all outstanding fees must be paid in cash or money order before the skater is allowed to participate in practice ice or events. MUSIC: Each competitor must supply his/her own music on CD for Freeskate programs, Short programs and Showcase each music item submitted must be clearly labeled with the competitor's name, club, event and length of music. CDs must have only 1 (one) track per CD. All music should be turned in at the time of registration and may be picked up shortly after the completion of the event. It is recommended each competitor have an extra copy of music for each event entered. Every reasonable care will be taken, but The Massena Figure Skating Club cannot be responsible for CDs left at the end of the competition. LIABILITY: U.S. Figure Skating, Massena Figure Skating Club, and Massena Recreational Arena accept no responsibility for injury or damage sustained by any participant in this competition. This is in accordance with Rule 1600 of the official U.S. Figure Skating Rulebook. JUDGING SYSTEM: Competition governed by the rules in the USFS rulebook unless specifically stated otherwise. Programs that exceed the allotted time will not be penalized; however, the judges will stop judging when the maximum time has been reached. The 6.0 judging system will be used. REGISTRATION: Registration will begin on March 23, 2019 at 7:00 am and will be open throughout the competition. The registration table will be located at the main entrance. Please register promptly upon arrival. CANADIAN EQUIVALENTS: In all events, the following Skate Canada level equivalents apply. The following chart is supplied for your convenience. For all events where permitted by USFS, male and female skaters may compete against each other if there are insufficient entries to hold a separate event. Skaters may skate up one level higher in any event, but may not skate below their test level. Any event with a large number of entries below Juvenile will be divided into smaller groups. The competition committee reserves the right to divide or combine any event, if necessary, and to cancel any event (with full refund of entry fee) due to lack of participants. Any other refunds will be at the discretion of the Competition Committee. (Rule 3235). 4 . AWARDS: will be awarded to the first THREE placements in each event at the announced times during the competition. Ribbons will be awarded to the fourth place finishers. Results will be posted and will be available for purchase at the registration desk for $0.25 per copy. SCHEDULE: Will be out approximately 1 week prior to the competition. The schedule will be available on EntryEeze and ed to each club with skaters in the competition. OFFICIAL NOTICES: An official bulletin board will be maintained at the registration desk. It is the responsibility of each competitor, parent and coach to check the bulletin board frequently for any schedule changes and/or additional information. Skaters are requested to arrive one hour prior to the scheduled time of their event. A tentative schedule of events will be posted prior to the competition. INFMATION REGARDING COACHES: The Massena Invitational is a USFS sanctioned event; therefore, in order to be granted access to work within U.S. Figure Skating sanctioned activities, each coach must complete the US Figure Skating Coach Compliance requirements, as summarized below. Current member in good standing with U.S. Figure Skating Completed background check (green light status) Completed SafeSport Training* Continuing Education Requirements (CERs) for the Competition Season Proof of current general liability insurance with limits of $1 million per occurrence/$5 million aggregate The local organizing committee/club will have a list of compliant coaches who are cleared for a credential at the competition. Coaches will need to check in at the event registration desk and show a government issued photo I.D. to receive a credential. If a coach cannot provide a photo I.D. and is not on the list or cannot produce the necessary documents, he or she will not be allowed a credential no exceptions. We strongly urge all coaches to have their cards with them. Non-credentialed coaches will not be permitted in the designated coaching area at rink side during events including practice sessions. Coaching at U.S. Figure Skating events without compliance is an ethics violation which is reported to U.S. Figure Skating and PSA. *If a foreign coach has only foreign athletes, a background check and SafeSport Training is not required. Instead, the coach must submit a letter from their Federation stating they are a member in good standing. 5 NOTE: Skaters must be at the rink and READY TO SKATE at least one hour before their scheduled event time. This is a non-qualifying competition and events may run ahead or behind schedule INDIVIDUAL FREE SKATING EVENTS Skaters may enter only one Freestyle event during the same non-qualifying competition (excel or well-balanced). Participation in all nonfree-skating events will be based on test level not free-skate choice. For any free skate event, skaters may compete only at the test level, or one level higher. See current rulebook (2018/19) for rules and requirements. WELL BALANCED FREE SKATE Programs will be judged according to the well-balanced program descriptions as shown in the current (2018/19) US Figure Skating Rulebook. Vocal music is permitted at all levels. Skaters may skate at their test level one level higher. 13 FWARD SHOOT THE DUCK Skaters will be judged on the quality of the entry/exit, the length and the depth of their sit. Skaters may attempt each element twice. If the skater chooses to make a second attempt, the second attempt will be the one judged. 14 MUSIC INTERPRETATION Format: Interpretive is a performance choreographed by the competitor, unaccompanied and unassisted, to music supplied by the competition committee / LOC. Programs should incorporate various elements of expressive movement and skating moves, to enhance the skater s interpretation of the music, rather than technical elements. The music will be played twice during an on-ice warm-up prior to the performance. The room will be attended only by the adult monitor assigned to play the music and the competing skaters in that group. Skaters after the warm up will go back to a room, with no music being played. Skaters will be brought to the ice when the previous skater finishes. All competitors in an event will interpret the same music. 20 SOLO/PARTNERED PATTERN DANCE General event parameters: 1. Levels are based upon the skaters highest pattern dance test passed. 2. A solo pattern dance competition event will consist of the skater performing two solo pattern dances. 3. The patterns to be skated depend upon which quarter of the year the competition is held. The skater will perform the two pattern dances listed for their level, based upon the date of the competition. If the competition falls over two quarters (for example, June 30 th July 2 nd ), the dance will be selected based on the start date of the competition listed in the announcement (in this example, the 2 nd quarter). 4. Skaters will complete both of the dances at each level. Dances will be scheduled at the discretion of the Chief Referee for each competition and may be competed consecutively or with a break in-between pattern dances groupings.
