2 The President s Column Could someone please tell me where the summer has gone! I still can t believe it is already over, airplane-training classes will be ending shortly and soon we will be trading in our wheels for skis. Teaching the basic airplane-training class this summer allowed Steve Plantenberg and myself to really get to know the new membership. It was great to watch the flying skills progress and proved to be very rewarding and fun for both Steve and myself. The club owes Steve a huge thank you for maintaining one of the club trainers for the entire summer (not an easy task) and for giving up his Tuesday nights to help others learn hobby. The club also wishes to thank the other members that have worked very hard though out the year supporting the club. In particular, Mark Woytassek and Frank Gutierrez for their help with advanced airplane training and their continued support with the many facets of running the club. Your experience, guidance and help are always greatly appreciated. A huge thank you also goes out to Jim Doty for all of his hard work with putting together the FlightLine. I would also like to extend a personal thank you to both Gregg Lind and Chris Heald for their help on the executive this year. The end of summer also means it is that time again to renew your CMA membership. As an incentive to get the membership to signup early the club will be giving away a twenty-dollar SIG gift certificate. The drawing will be held at the October 5 th CMA monthly meeting. To be eligible for the drawing you must have paid your club dues on or before October 5 th (yes you can renew at the meeting). You need not be present at the meeting to win, however, if you attend you also have a chance to win the Hobby Town USA five-dollar gift certificate. The torrential rainfall that caused the postponement of the 23 rd of September Fun Fly will hopefully be a distant memory on October 7 th when we will try to do it again. There are beginner, intermediate and advanced events so come on out and have fun. Participate, and you have a chance at winning a SIG LT-40, Somethin Extra, or Fazar. Pilot briefing and sign in starts at 1 PM at the Flying Field (Martinson sod farm. For the most up to date information on Field conditions check out the Collins Voice Bulletin Board at The September CMA Club Meeting went very well and some great ideas for the CMA Fun Fly were generated. Thanks to all the members that showed up for their input. Congratulations to Charles Ward, the winner of September s $5 gift certificate. Attend the next CMA club meeting and it could be YOU! I look forward to seeing you at the next CMA club meeting. Remember you can keep current on club events by visiting our web site and also by visiting the discussion group on the Collins Intranet at collins.rec.model.aviators. 3 wind. Still several of the modelers took a shot at getting their planes into the air. The planes with smaller tails were especially squirrelly at low altitudes (where the gusts were strongest). ½-A fun in Indiana by Jim Doty This summer I visited my family in Indiana and went with my father to one of his local fields to watch the ½-A Texaco fun fly. The members build ½-A sized old-timer models powered with Texaco.049 engines. The object is to fly the longest on one small tank of gas. Unfortunately it was rather windy, and these small lightweight planes aren t very stable in a high You had to land in the field for your time to count, so there was a lot of effort spent in fighting the headwinds back to the field. The flyers had to keep their planes noses pointed down to make headway into the wind, so some of the times weren t as good as expected. Still, during some of the more calm periods, there were some longer flights. As would be expected under the gusty conditions, there were a few hard landings. Fortunately most of the damage was limited to covering FlightLine Page 3

4 The ½-A models look like they would not be hard to build. And in calm weather they are not hard to fly. The engines don t cost much and the scratch-built models don t take much wood. The biggest cost if for the ultra-light servos and receivers, and those have been falling in price recently. This type of event might be good for our club to try. and a few broken spars. I m sure they all will be flying again soon. There were also a few other planes at the field that were a little better suited to the high winds. My father brought his pylon racer for a quick test before the next day s race, but engine problems kept him grounded. Fortunately he was still able to make the race the next day. Other than the wind, the weather was great. The observers had a good time watching all the planes fight their way through the wind. The conditions probably made the event a little more exciting then a typical time flight contest in calm weather.jim Doty FlightLine Editor 4. FlightLine Page 4
