LOWER COWLITZ ADULT TRIBUTARY ABUNDANCE METHODS WDFW By Chip Nissell Lower Cowlitz Monitoring and Evaluation
PRESENTATION OVERVIEW Lower Cowlitz tributary weirs 1. Weir Locations 2. Weir Operations weir results (preliminary) Spawner surveys (coho, steelhead) 1. Survey methods (redd identification) 2. Survey objectives 3. Salmonid distribution in Lower Cowlitz watershed results (preliminary)
PRESENTATION OVERVIEW CONT Abundance Methodology 1. Mark-Recapture preliminary steelhead Mark-Recapture estimates (above weirs) preliminary coho Mark-Recapture estimates (above weirs) 4. Redd based preliminary steelhead Redd based estimates (outside weirs) preliminary coho Redd based estimates (outside weirs) preliminary totals for steelhead and coho
KEY TALKING POINTS phos and total spawners Lower Cowlitz Weirs 1. Existing locations 2. Possibilities of new locations Accurate and informed abundance estimates 1. Replace old methodologies 2. Crucial for NOR recovery 3. Allows for invaluable information on health and diversity of salmonids
LOWER COWLITZ WEIRS Four resistance board weirs located on Olequa, Delameter, Lacamas and Ostrander Creeks. Traps checked daily Maiden NOR salmonids are tagged (opercle punch, FLOY tags) passed upstream. Maiden HOR clipped fish are surplused or used for nutrient enhancement Data collected includes. 1. Species, clips, scales, sex, CWT (Coded Wire Tag) DNA, length, direction of travel

LOWER COWLITZ WEIRS CONT Control number of hatchery fish on spawning grounds. Collect natural origin winter-run steelhead for integrated hatchery broodstock program. Provide tributary abundance and phos estimates (markrecapture, in conjunction with spawner surveys).
2016 WEIR RESULTS #'s Passed Upstream of Weirs Weir Steelhead Coho Ostrander Delameter Olequa Lacamas Totals
LOWER COWLITZ SPAWNER SURVEYS COHO AND STEELHEAD Redds (nests) are given a status of New, Still Visable, Not Visable, or Not Observed. New redds labeled in the field (see poster presentation). Data collected from carcasses: sex, fork length, marks (clips), CWT, spawn success, carcass condition, tags ( FLOY and opercle) direction of survey, weather, conditions, clarity and time of survey. Data is collected electronically with I-Pads. Daily downloads into TWS (Traps,Weirs,Surveys) access database.
LOWER COWLITZ SPAWNER SURVEYS COHO Surveys conducted weekly, October to January Census reaches, cover all spawnable habitat in a stream 1. Delameter/Monahan 2. Arkansas 3. Ostrander 4. Brights GRTS reaches, cover part of spawnable habitat in a stream 1. Reaches statistically selected to be representative 2. 1-mile length reaches or 30% of spawnable habitat
421 Miles Modeled Coho Habitat Miles Covered Weekly in 2016
LOWER COWLITZ SPAWNER SURVEYS STEELHEAD Surveys conducted bi-weekly, February - May. Census surveys, cover all spawnable habitat 1. Delameter/Monahan 2. Arkansas 3. Ostrander 4. Olequa 5. Blue GRTS reaches, cover part of spawnable habitat 1-mile length 1. Reaches statistically representative 2. 1-mile length reaches or 30% of spawnable habitat
2016 STEELHEAD DISTRIBUTION, REDDS, SURVEYS 150 Miles of Modeled Steelhead Habitat 93.6 Miles Covered Bi-Weekly in 2016

MARK-RECAPTURE (ABOVE WEIRS) Petersen mark-recapture with Chapman modification (N t.nor ) 1. Abundance (N t.nor ) = (n 1 +1) n 2+1 m n 1 are fish tagged and released above the weir. 3. n 2 are the natural-origin kelts (steelhead) recovered above the weir. 4. and m 2 are the number of previously tagged fish (recaptures, carcasses) recovered above the weir (coho, steelhead).

REDD BASED (OUTSIDE WEIRS) 2016 STEELHEAD ESTIMATE Redd based estimate includes areas below weirs. Notable creeks in estimate include: Blue Cr, Salmon Cr, Lacamas Cr, Cedar Cr and numerous other small tributaries within modeled steelhead habitat. Estimate N. NOR N. 25 TAKE HOME POINTS Other metrics gathered from weir and spawner surveys operations include: 1. Age classes 2. Abundance 3. Females per redd 4. % female 5. phos 6. Spatial and temporal fish distribution
TAKE HOME CONT. Both Mark-Recapture and Redd Based our designed to provide unbiased estimates and include estimates of precision (confidence intervals). Not yet able to generate confidence intervals with Chinook (see Chris Gleizes presentation). Weirs greatly reduce phos. 1. Blue Cr weir 2. Arkansas Cr weir Goals of FHMP Appendix J is to estimate: 1. NOS (natural-origin spawners) 2. HOS (hatchery-origin spawners) 3. phos (% of hatchery origin spawners)
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Big thank you to the 2016 steelhead crew: Jay Anderson, Jesse Jones, Nels Parvi and Elizabeth Lee coho crew: Teresa Fryer, David Snyder, Brandon Harkleroad, Noll Steinweg, Timothy Peterson weir operation: Bryan Weiser, Ian Brauner, Nate Straten and Carson Swart.
