2 Early entry winners: Class Early entry winner: Carmen Dawkins, grade 2/3 Sorrento Elementary Mural (picture in cabin) Individual entry winners: Abby Bock, Kindergarten, picture and Molly Bock, grade 2, picture Final Youth for Salmon contest winners 2018 of $500 or more: 1. Greatest number of entries from one school for $600 goes to: Collingwood School, West Vancouver with all grade nine classes doing the project 2. Best middle school class for $800 goes to two classes: Shuswap Middle School Mrs. Whitehead and Mrs. Dewitt grade 6/7

Best primary school goes for $500 to: Ecole Christine Morrison Elementary School grade 1/2 and grade 5/6-video in English, French and local Indigenous language That if Salmon had a voice, they would call for help "we are in danger." Salmon is so much more than just "fish" Salmon need clean water and we want Salmon forever. 4. Best home learning entry for $500 goes to: Pemberton Home Learners- video Youth for Salmon contest winners 2018 of $300: 5. Best Early primary class entry for $300 goes to: Mrs. Williams grade 2/3 class at Bastion Elementary school As a class we discussed the Life Cycle of Sockeye Salmon and the amazing trek they endure to come back home to the Adams River. We discussed the various environmental and ecological hurdles they face during their journey. We linked the ability of the Sockeye Salmon's successful journey to our lives and carbon footprint. We discussed ways we can successfully support the Salmon life cycle, their return home to spawn, and how our choices not only impact ourselves but all creatures living on our planet and summarized it to "Take care in our own lives, so that salmon thrive!" We greatly enjoyed our Field trip to Adams River and taking part in the "Salute to the Sockeye" celebration bringing real life experience to our classroom study.
4 6. Best whole school entry for $300 goes to: Sun Peaks Elementary school for their song He wrote this song to help learn about the stages of the salmon and the challenges they face. It helped us respect the salmon and how rare it is to see what we were seeing at Adm's river. Here are the lyrics! The salmon is a fish Who fights to stay alive From Stream to Sea and back is called The cycle of it s life I am a tiny Egg Beneath the river cold I ll stay here til the day I hatch When I'm just 2 months old (chorus) Alevin is my name I m only one inch long I m feeding from my yolk-sac where The water s cold and calm (chorus) I ve turned into a Fry I m free to swim and feed I ll hide out from my predators Among the rocks and weeds (chorus) I m now six inches long I ve grown into a Parr I m swimming closer to the sea I ve come from very far (chorus) A Smolt is what I m called Salt water s now my home Until I go back to the stream The Ocean's where I ll roam (chorus) An Adult fish I am It's time to journey back I ll turn red and return to spawn exactly where I hatched. 5 Youth for Salmon contest individual winners 2018 of sponsored prizes: 1. Monique Kelly (Collingwood school #82) won a $50 MEC gift card for her song I leaned that salmon have to face an extreme amount of obstacles and not many salmon have the chance to come back and spawn. I learned that deforestation is one of the many roots of problems and challenges that the salmon face. Deforestation causes erosion which causes rockslides and landslides, the salmon's path is blocked by the land, rocks and debris from erosion. Overall, I learned that by decreasing deforestation can help more salmon come home. I created a song parody to "Landslide" by the Dixie Chicks. It discusses the impacts of land erosion and deforestation, and how it has blocked the paths of many salmon coming home. 2. Geneva Ge (Collingwood school #55) won a $50 MEC gift card for her info graphic poster I learned that even through countless obstacles, both man-made and natural, salmon manage to find their way home. Their cultural significance and importance to our local-ecosystem makes them invaluable, and we should find many different ways to support salmon/fish populations. Spreading awareness is a good first step. My infographic was created for the purpose of raising awareness and offering solutions to just a few of the obstacles salmon face. It offers some solutions on the key problems that salmon are currently facing in their natural habitats on their difficult journey. Next page

7 3. Tori Punter (Collingwood school #69) won a $50 MEC gift card for her website I learned about the journey salmon go on and how dangerous and exhausting it is for them. 8 5. Dayton Massey (grade 11, Salmon Arm) won a $50 gift card to Skookum Cycle donated by Shuswap Trail Alliance for his ski design. I painted the salmon on the skis that i made with the idea that when I am on my skis they should always be moving, just like the salmon are always moving. skiing is similar to the movement of fish but instead of making great journeys UP I will make great journeys DOWN. I also thought it would be very neat to bring the thought of salmon to people's minds even in the middle of winter because they are just that important. I also tried to integrate an aspect of "looseness" to the salmon by making the lines NOT follow the paint exactly. This shows the salmon in the water which makes things look fractured and "out of the lines"

10 6. Emily Parsons (grade 7, Kamloops) won a $100 gift card to Jack Sam s restaurant at Quaaout Lodge for her story 7. Sabine Buckmeier (grade 4, Salmon Arm) won an painting from Carmen Miller I learned that people should help save the salmon instead of hurting them. I also learned that when you kill one fish that is a female you may be destroying the chance for hundreds of eggs to become fish. I drew a picture that had a line in the middle separating the wrong thing to do and the right thing to do. On one half there is somebody fishing and a big basket of already dead fish. On the other half there is a peaceful river with salmon trying to make their way to their spawning grounds.
11 8. Emily Miles (grade 5, Vernon) won a family pass for Alan Brooks Nature Centre I walked Coldstream Creek with my brownie friends to see the Kokanee Salmon spawn and learned that the fish need clean water to lay their eggs in. My painting is of a spawning salmon in clean water.

Cole Buckmeier (grade 6, Shuswap Middle School, Salmon Arm) won an Archery lesson from Quaaout Lodge I learned that oil rigs and big oil tankers have big spills and that the salmon can be harmed and poisoned by the oil. Most of the salmon that get poisoned die but some will live to lay eggs and those eggs will be poisoned too so they will most likely die. To help the salmon come home we can create a safer way to extract oil from under the ocean. I drew a picture of an oil rig out in the ocean with a salmon swimming close by. This picture shows that humans are very harmful to animals on the planet.
